Gameday Live 24: Yankees at Indians

Good evening Yankees fans.

We're going to try some new live blogging technology tonight. Below will be a live blog from the game. It will update automatically in most browsers. Your comments will also be seen as soon as you post them.

We'll also try a poll or two during the game.

Pregame chatter

Yankees (12-11) at Cleveland Indians (10-12), 7:05 p.m.

Starters: Andy Pettitte (3-1, 2.45) for the Yankees and Paul Byrd (0-2, 4.43) for the Indians.

Midges II? The Yankees return to Cleveland for the first time since Game 2 of last year's ALDS when a swarm of midges disrupted playoff dreams - and Joba's pitching. No midges in the forecast tonight since they haven't hatched yet. Read this story for more.

Strange, but true: Tonight's starting pitchers - Pettitte and Byrd - will match two players linked to HGH use.

Be back later. Please check below for the live blog once the game gets going.

Hey, this is a cool little new toy. It's like an AOL chatroom.

The Tribe announcers just said this but I didn't know the Yanks haven't lost a series in Cleveland in a decade.

I'm already sick of the midges references and we're just in the first game of the series.

I'm going to post this here so hopefully more people will see it:

Robertson promoted to SWB

Cox promoted to Trenton

Interesting that Cox is promoted ahead of Melancon, but people have said Melancon had the better chance to impact the team this year...very interesting and I'm very excited for Robertson, though selfishly I wish I got to see him more at Trenton

Traber this guy is a joke.

Bruney out for the season is a real tough loss.Hopefully Albadejo and Britton will show something .

Robertson might be on the fast track now that Bruney has gone down.

interesting to note, fox sports has an article on the "nastiest pitches" in baseball...Chamberlains fastball is on there but not his slider...IMO i think his slider is by far his "nastiest" pitch...any thoughts?

I saw a comment about Veras on the live blog and just wanted to pop in to add my 2 cents on the guy. Physically he reminds me of Armando Benitez - now - we all know Benitez is a headcase, but if he's got that type of stuff (which the 16ks in 10 ip in AAA seem to indicate) I would love to see him get an extended look.

Will Nieves hit a game winning HR for the Nats today. In 26 games and 61 ABs for us last year, he hit 0.

I don't think much of Veras. I mean, we originally signed him to help us during the 2006 season after he spent 2005 with the Texas Rangers' AAA affliaiate and we all know how well that's worked out. He's what, 28 years old now or soon will be. I don't have much faith in him being a bullpen fixture. I like Britton and Abalejedo though and think they can give us some effective innings.

Veras is actually 26 and will be 27 this fall.I'm not sold on Veras either but there are alot of effective 30-35 yr old relievers around so what does age have to do with it? Just git-it -done.

My point is that he hasn't proven himself yet and he's only getting older and he's been in AAA for a while. It's not like he's been hiding out. Most successful relief pitchers over the age of 30 were also successful relief pitchers under the age of 30. Veras was advertised as being 25 back when we signed him in November, 2005, so either he's lying about his age or he's not only 26 now. If he was 25 then, the youngest he could be now is 27.
