Hitting (or not) with runners in scoring position

The Yankees haven't been hitting much with runners in scoring position this season. Entering today's game, they were batting only .216 in such situations, with a .233 slugging percentage and a .314 OBP.

Here are some individual breakdowns, for players with at least 10 ABs with RISP. This is through Matsui's double in the fourth inning today.

Jeter: 6-of-13, 1 3B, 8 RBI, 0 BB, 1 SO
Abreu: 5-of-12, 1 2B, 5 RBIs, 2 BB, 2 SO
Hideki Matsui: 4-of-13, 1 2B, 1 HR, 6 RBI, 2 BB, 2 SO
Robinson Cano: 3-of-22, 1 2B, 4 RBI, 1 BB, 2 SO
Johnny Damon: 2-of-15, 1 2B, 4 RBI, 1 BB, 4 SO
Alex Rodriguez: 3-of-19, 1 2B, 3 RBI, 3 BB, 6 SO
Jason Giambi: 1-of-13, 1 2B, 3 RBI, 4 BB, 2 SO

Went to see the boys at Camden Yards last night. They look listless. At least with the Johnson kid, we know they never hit pitchers they've never seen, but Kennedy got rocked and there's no explanation for the rest of it. I'm getting tired of seeing Cano make lazy approaches and two out errors on routine ground balls any high school player could make. Didn't Bowa chew him out about that last year? Also, could someone please tell Melky to pull up his pants? One of these days he's gonna get his spikes caught in them and trip rounding a base or chasing a fly. Besides, it looks sloppy and reminds me of Michael Kay's ill-advised "idiot" line about the Red Sox. Bet he regrets that one.

I get this all the time--like every time I try to post, often for ten or fifteen minutes at a time.

Above comment--under tag Bleecker--was me (DC). It wouldn't let me post for about 15 minutes--kept saying I'd been posting too frequently even though I haven't posted in days, if not a week. It seems to happen whenever I try to post--which is infrequently, so I decided to see if it was my handle, and sure enough. . .Coincidence? Is this common? Is it a technical thing? I see people posting several times within minutes all the time. I'm pretty sure I've never made an obscene post. Anyway, I thought they didn't block. Anyone know what's up?

In any case, Jorge made a nice play on a low line drive to first in the 6th last night. I keep forgetting he used to be an infielder.

Uh oh, A-Rod's coming out. stretching his hammy. Last night before the game, he was out in the field doing lower back stretches with a trainer, then was the DH. I don't know if that was the plan all along--to give him a rest and get Ensberg some AB's, but he's definitely knicked up. The whole team seems to be. Plus, they had a couple really late flight arrivals this week, if I remember correctly.

Looks like A-Fraud going on the DL.

When it rains, it pours, right Yankee fans?

This Yankees team has 70=92 written all over themselves. And yet you get rid of Torre. You ungrateful fanbase

RSF, if you're going to refer to our best player, we prefer the term Z-Rod, thank you very much.

When is the Giambi experiment going to end?? He is awful. Anyone see Manny get thrown out today? Not sure I have seen him do that before.

Also, anyone that thinks the Yankees will finish 70-92 probably is living in his moms basement lol

Thanks for the stat data. It bears out what my eyes have been telling me. Glad to know it's not just my personal bias, but it is actually FACT. Jeter (without any MVP's) is actually doing a pretty good job of Gitting-R-Done. Abreu and Matsui (no MVP's either) are also doing a respectable job. The rest of the team are not doing their jobs, especially Giambi and AR (both MVP guys). Thanks again Kat!

Don't want to speak too soon, but once again, Andy to the rescue. Even if they somehow blow this, he's done his job. Pettitte is the ultimate stopper.

I'm just sayin', that double aside, it's an HQS (high-quality start) after 3 losses in a row to division rivals. It just seems you can always count on him.

I have to watch on the O's channel. Jim Palmer's fun to listen to sometimes, but they never pay attention to the Yank in-game stats the way the Yankee broadcasts do. Anyone know how many pitches Pettitte's thrown? Is anyone warming up?

One thing I've like seeing over the last several rather grim days is that at times when Girardi was looking glumly out over the field during a game, Posado or Jeter would come stand alongside him and have a conversation. Not just joking or fooling around, but sticking around and talking with him. It's good when core veteran Yankees make it plain that they are with him.

Great observation Diane!! These are some of the "little things" that go on during a game that not everyone is tuned into.

Yanks are going to be 10-10 after today's game.
They were 8-12 after 20 games in 2007
11-9 in 2006
9-11 in 2005

I think 50 games is more of a barometer about where a team is headed ,management will continue to tweak the roster as they did last yr.By mid-June we'll be watching a slightly different team.
