Dan Giese is replacing Darrell Rasner in the starting rotation. Giese's first start will be Friday in Anaheim. Joe Girardi said they really liked the way he had been throwing the ball, and that's why they opted for him over Ian Kennedy or someone else. Giese should be able to throw 80-85 pitches.
Giese was born in Anaheim, and said: "That's going to be a big-time homecoming for sure. I wasn't expecting anything at all. For it to be Anaheim, that's great."
Phil Hughes will start Thursday for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, and Carl Pavano Thursday for Double-A Trenton.
Mariano Rivera (back spasms) felt OK when he played catch and thinks he can pitch tonight, but it will be up to Girardi.
Ivan Rodriguez is looking forward to playing in his longtime home, where he remains extremely popular.
Melky Cabrera is getting a day or two off. he's been struggling.

Well, for those of you on the last string who wanted to see Christian play - you're getting your wish.
Not sure Giese is an upgrade over Rasner. He has the advantage of the Angels not having much of a scouting report on him. But my guess is that we'll see Rasner coming in to relieve Giese just as Giese relieved Rasner.
I think the Yankee brass wanted to avoid bringing Kennedy back against the Angels and would prefer to bring him back to face the Twins or Royals the following week.
Viper, I think you're right. If Hughes is throwing 95+, I hope he can build up arm strength and pitch for us in September. I remember the Hughes that almost no-hit Texas; that guy can help us.
alot of Pitchers have thrown several no hit innings
Anon, I'm talking about the difference in stuff between that Hughes and the one we've seen the last year and a half. My recollection is that he threw 7 no hit innings before getting hurt, and that's still pretty rare....
Damn.....Joba just left game with injury. I hope it's cramps from the heat.
This team is bitten by the transition bug which was labeled on this season. Injuries, weak back end starting rotation plus unexpected weak hitting with RISP take its toll on the win column. Also if I labeled weak twice in the prior sentence, its an indication of our chances to advance to a playoff spot but I'm still hopefull.
Best of luck Joba with your medical exam.
Spirit..lol
Lets hope Joba's injury was just some stiffness or dehydration. The fact that he didnt experience any sharp pain or drop in velocity is decent news. I would be extra cautious with Joba and skip at least his next start no matter what, forget the playoff race, Joba is too valuable to this franchise long term. If there's any lingering stiffness or pain, I would shut him down. If the MRI shows any fraying of the labrum or inflamation in the rotator cuff, shut him down. Really its great that the Yanks are in this with two months left, but lets be honest, this is not a team built for a deep playoff run. Too many ?'s in the rotation, too many injuries to our hitters and too many young inexperienced bullpen guys. Lets take this year for what its worth, get young guys some experience, have some more good times at the old stadium and position ourselves for a big run in 09. If Joba is out for the year, this is the perfect time to take a step back to move two steps forward next season. Bench the dead weight and get the young guys some MLB exposure. I may be getting ahead of myself though, lets see what the prognosis is on Joba's shoulder 1st.
I agree that Giese is a one time start, look for Ian to take his next turn.
Looks like Phil will come back in early Sept, he's starting for AAA on Thursday and will go 65 pitches. If he does really well I could see him up in the last week of August, looks like some help is on the way.
Despite his good numbers at AAA the general feeling on Kennedy is that his velocity is down and his breaking balls lack bite. In short, he's getting away with stuff against inferior hitters that won't translate to the Majors - that's why Giese is getting the nod ahead of him.
Hughes will throw 65 pitches tonight, then 85 on Sunday and then Thursday he should be up to 95 - 105 which means, if it is just an issue of getting his pitch count up he should be ready to go next Sunday. More likely than not, it will depend on how his velocity is.
On the plus side, if there is one, Big Papi felt a "click" in his wrist, the same wrist that shut him down earlier this season. It's entirely possible we'll see playoff baseball without the Yankees or Sox...good luck with that Fox.
Yeah Chip, I was just reading that about Papi. Imagine the Sox playoff roster without Papi and Manny? Imagine what Fox will do if the Yanks and Sox dont make the postseason, they could have these possible AL matchups...
Rays vs White Sox
Twins vs Angels
If those are the 4 teams in the playoffs, the ad execs better pray that its a White Sox Angels ALCS, because if its Rays Twins...ouch.
DRU - TBS has the rights to the AL playoffs but yeah...it's gonna be rough on them.
Personally if the Yankees don't make the playoffs I'm rooting for Twins/Arizona - two people will watch.
Can't root for the Dodgers despite Mattingly being out there because I don't want to spend a winter listening to Mike and Mad Dog blasting the Yankees (again) for getting rid of Torre.
Can't root for Tampa because that would be insane
Like the way the Angels play the game, but I don't like the Angels
Hate Ozzie
Would like the Cubs fans to continue suffering
Maybe the Phillies would be good because it would upset the Met fan - but also enjoy the suffering of Philly fans
Brew Crew are a possibility...
Actually the Dodgers winning the WS would be torture for both the Yankee and Red Sox fan - especially if neither team is in the playoffs. Torre and Manny leading the Dodgers to the World Series...that could get ugly in the respective media markets
In other news - after considering leaving baseball rather than report to the Pirates, Jose Tabata has reported. The Pirates assigned him to Rookie ball
...and I'm starting to think there's a curse of Mike Stanton.
Can anyone think of a left handed relief pitcher who has come to the Yankees and been effective since Stanton's first tenure in the Bronx ended with sour feelings?
I mean, I'm not writing Marte off but seriously, the list is startling:
Marte
Traber
Embree
Myers
Villone
Osborne
Stanton Part 2
Nitkowski
Henn
Chip, you might be right about the Stanton curse thing. I think there is a Bernie curse too for centerfielders. I was hoping Girardi would have taken Marte out after the second walk, but guess he didn't want to take a chance on the kid Robertson.
I want to know why Yanks stopped pitching inside last night. It seemed Pudge was setting up away for the fastball all night to the right-handed hitters and the ball was carrying to rightfield like crazy.
Don't know why they got away from pitching inside to the righties, but Chamberlain was throwing WAY too many breaking pitches last night, what I call "pitching scared". Was this Pudge calling the game or the bench - either way it stunk. And X-Man came through again in a clutch situation. This guy is a gamer. Instead of starting Giese, I would have brought up Aceves for one start. Angels haven't seen the guy and he is a control pitcher. Keep Giese in the bullpen in long relief is the better option.
Chip - you're beginning to sound an awful lot like Spirit wishing suffering on fans and beliving in curses. Please get a grip on reality and rise above the likes of "spirit." Yankee fans have to be better than that.
Chip - Even if the Yanks make the playoffs, Im pulling for the Cubbies. If any team and any fans deserve a WS win, its them.
haha...good call on the Stanton curse.
As we wait to hear what's going on with Joba, let me lift your spirits a little by seeing how some of our kids did last night...
Phil Coke struck out 3 in 1 2/3 perfect innings.
Steven Jackson struck out 2 and gave up a hit in 1 shutout inning
Juan Miranda was 2 for 4.
Austin Jackson was 4 for 5 with 2 doubles to raise his average to .297 on the season. He has 30 doubles on the season and a solid .821 OPS.
Jesus Montero was 1 for 5 with a 2-run double.
Austin Romine was 2 for 5 with a double, and is hitting .277.
Brandon Laird was 1 for 5 with his 16th homer, his 4th in the last 3 games.
As far as waiting to get the news on Joba, this feels like a huge game of "Press Your Luck"...no wammy no wammy no wammy.....
Ok, if Joba is down for any amount of time, I want the guy who sewed Schillings ankle together to come in and do that for Wang so he can be put back in the rotation. I don't care what Wang's injury is (linsfrac?0, I just say "sew it up doc" and let's get moving.
Seriously, this potential for Joba missing any amount of time is devastating and we can't sugarcoat it. This was the one guy in the rotation we felt could shut down a hot team and give the Yanks the best chance at winning and making the playoffs. This is going to be a nail biting wait for information on his status.
Now Rasner is probably going right back in the rotation, which means the Yanks may have to call up bullpen and help and I can seriously envision a scenario where Carl freakin' Pavano is going to be needed to help this team and once again, he will get hurt and let NY down, he is after all, pure evil.
I disagree w/ Chip, if the Yanks don't win, I want Mattingly to win one and yeah, I like Torre so I wouldn't mind seeing him win it, along with the ex-Red Sox, that would be too much fun to hate.
I also am pulling for the Cubbies, as I said a few weeks ago that I'd love to see Sweet Lou have a hand in ending the curse.
So I'm not so impressed with Marte' right now.....
Speaking of mistreating arms -- good to be conservative about Joba, but what about Marte? He hasn't thrown that many pitches at one time for at least two years, no wonder he lost it. Why didn't Girardi put Robertson in? Looking for another Abaladeho outcome?
Chip,
You forgot about Heredia 1 & 2. LOL
I'd rather see Livan Hernandez in pinstripes before Pavano were to ever take the mound for the Yanks.
Excuse me while I barf into my trashcan......
Did anyone catch Karstens' line from Friday night against the Cubs? Sorry if you talked about it over the weekend, but it was pretty impressive. Good for him, but I can't help but think he'll have a similar progression to what Rasner did for us, just a little bit better.
6 IP 0 R 5 H 4 BB 2 K
McCutchen has had a rougher time in his first couple of AAA outings for the Indianapolis Indians, going 6 innings each in his two starts, but giving up 4 and 3 runs on 7 and 5 hits with 3 Ks per game.
Ohlendorf has looked slightly better going 6 and 7.2 innings, giving up 4 and 3 runs on 7 and 6 hits while striking out a total of 14 batters.
Anon -
I didn't forget Heredia - there are certain things that my mind blocks out and won't let me remember - Felix Heredia was one of them.
HYD - Yeah, Karstens is going to be great right until someone puts together a scouting report on him.
Marte was left in for 2 reasons. 1: To face Josh Hamilton and then when the bases were loaded he didn't want to bring a rookie into that situation where he would have to groove a strike.
I'm rooting for the D'Backs and Twins because when the ratings come out and three people have watched the game I want to hear all these clowns who chirp that the Yankees and Red Sox are bad for baseball.
