It wasn't pretty, whatsoever, but nobody on the Yankees seemed to care. All that mattered to them was that they won 13-9 over the Tigers.
Derek Jeter said: "I don't care how it looks. I'll take a win over playing well and losing."
And Bobby Abreu said: "It doesn't matter. The thing that matters is that we won, not how we won."
The Yankees’ front four of Johnny Damon, Jeter, Abreu and Alex Rodriguez combined for 11 hits, eight RBIs and 10 runs scored in the narrow victory.
On the downside, Sidney Ponson gave up seven runs, six earned, in three innings plus five batters. Joe Girardi said he will remain in the rotation, but that would seem up for debate. Phil Hughes pitched well for Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre today, and could be called up.
That's it for the makeup game in Detroit. I will not be in Tampa, so Anthony Rieber will be your blogger over the next couple days. Catch you all from Seattle.

I don't expect Ponson on the team next year but of late I would not put Edwar on the roster. He'e being hit often and hard giving up the long ball with regularity. He is in fact good hitting as Kevin Millar has stated. His fastball is taking a beating as hitters just sit and wait for him to put it over the plate.
I have to agree regarding edwar, I was already put off by his crying last year, his stuff is hittable. I know he had a nice run earlier this year but he has never impressed me.
I am suprised Sidney is still on the team....we got more out of him than I thought possible and now it's all catching up ;-)
I've noticed that Ramirez seems to be terrible when he comes in with runners on base. At least he doesn't break down and cry anymore when he gets beat.
Today was just ugly, I write off just about all of it except the W and move on if I'm the Yanks, can't do much else about it.
Rieber- Good to have you running the show for a couple of days, how ya been buddy?
I have tickets to tuesdays game. Does anybody know if Joba has been activiated?
Mike: He will be activated tomorrow during the day is the word.
This Pedro Alvarez saga is really amazing. For those who haven't been paying attention, here's the skinny:
Pedro Alvarez was selected by the Pirates with the 3rd pick in the draft this year. His agent is Scott Boras. Boras wanted the Pirates to fork over $8.5 mil, the Pirates countered with $6 mil which Alvarez verbally accepted without consulting Boras. A player drafted later represented by a rival agent got 6.2 million. Boras, not willing to be upstaged by Casey Close (the other agent) has asserted that Alvarez signed after the deadline had passed - which is true because MLB granted an extension in the negotiations to get the i's dotted and t's crossed. So Boras wants Alvarez declared a free agent.
Now here's where things get even MORE interesting. Another Boras client, Eric Hosmer, signed with the Royals but his contract was processed AFTER the Alvarez one was. So the Pirates are contending that if Alvarez's contract is void then so too is Hosmer's. But Boras is contending that Hosmer's contract was done first but that the league just didn't get around to it because of the Alvarez contract taking so long.
So bottom line is that now Alvarez and Hosmer are both sitting out waiting for an arbitration hearing to determine what's going on. The arbitor will have to find either both contracts valid or void both contracts. If so this could be a boon for the Yankees, two top of the draft talents (both capable of playing 1st base and OF) all of a sudden available to the highest bidder. It could smooth out the rough feelings about having lost out on Gerrit Cole.
Overall though it shows me three things:
1. Boras is a snake
2. Alvarez is willing to go back on his word for 200k, a pittance for a ML player so I would stay away from him.
3. MLB is run by fools who can't even read a clock.
I'm glad to see that Hughes will be headed to Arizona. I was worried how the Yankees were going to get him his innings after such a long lay off.
It pains me to say we went another day, aas the Red Sox and Twins were winners tonight.. and Alvarez and Hosmers will sign with their teams, becaus I sent MLB.com and MLBPA hundreds of letters expressing Americas sport be Fair for All teams, including spending limits and free agency. My cause is my Life.God Bless America.
