If you're a Knicks fan, you probably haven't been able to watch too much of the playoffs -- that Spurs-Suns series really brought back some memories of those old battles with the Heat, didn't it? -- so my guess is you don't even want to know the outcome of Tuesday's draft lottery.
In case you're curious, it'll be televised by ESPN around 8:30 p.m. Right before Game 2 of the Western Conference Finals.
But you'll be engrossed in the season finale of "American Idol" at that time, right? (I think Blake's the winner. A white beat-boxer from Seattle with a a Maroon-5 sound...Jordin Sparks is just a pretty girl who can sing a little. Can I say that even though she's only 17?). You have Yankees-Red Sox or Mets-Braves. The "Deuce" is showing a WNBA game...Showtime has Capote.
Ever since I was a child, folks have thought they had me pegged, because of the way I am, the way I talk. And they're always wrong.
One would imagine that Spike Lee and Co. would be front row in Secaucus for this event had Isiah Thomas made the wise decision to lottery-protect this pick. There'd be a lot more hype surrounding it, especially with the college talent coming out this year. Imagine how a certain tabloid would be tripping over itself to make you believe the Knicks had a shot at Greg Oden or Kevin Durant.
But let's be honest, as much as a nightmare it would be to see the Bulls win the lottery with the Knicks' pick, the chances are so slim. There is a 1.9 percent chance it will turn up the first overall pick. The Memphis Grizzlies have the best shot at 25 percent. The Celtics have a 19.9 percent chance. Milwaukee has a 15.6 percent chance.
Still, the way things have gone for the Knicks, that 1.9 percent chance, there's a part of you that has to think history will be made. At your expense.
Not in his wildest dreams did he want to believe the Knicks would be a lottery pick two years after acquiring Eddy Curry. But that's like not having car insurance because you never expect to get rear-ended on the Long Island Expressway during rush hour.
The Atlanta Hawks, who have the fourth-best chance to win the thing at 11.9 percent, insured this pick before they offered it to Phoenix in the Joe Johnson deal. If the Hawks finish in the top 3, they keep the pick. Otherwise, the Suns can take it. So if the Hawks finish fourth, the Suns still get a great pick -- and the potential to draft a high-end talent --but at least the Hawks know they won't be giving up the potential first overall pick.

John Paxson could grandstand, but he won't be there in Secaucus, we're told. The Bulls will send a representative just to be there.
Hey, even if the Bulls fall right where the Knicks finished, ninth-worst, there's a chance they could get their hands on a quality big-man, which is what they're looking for. How would 7-2 Roy Hibbert look in black-and-red, Bulls fans?
Makes you cringe a little, doesn't it Knicks fans?

Some one has to tell me why NY area sports writers get such joy from torturing Knick fans? Do they think it will increase readership? Do they believe it will sell more papers? The truth is, all it does is make the reader frustrated, and angry. And those emotions first go to the writer, and the Knicks second.
Oh, and Alan, how about really doing your job and digging up rumors, ideas, and inside info?
Agree 100 percent. Do your job dude and tell us something we don't already know instead of the usual kick em while their down and dump on Isiah article. What's going on with the players. Is EC staying in shape? Will he be playing summer league? What are the other players doing to improve their game? How 'bout some real news?Like it or not, the NYK are about to turn the corner and will be a playoff caliber team next season. I guess that will be in spite of Isiah, not because of him. Can't give him credit for anythng, but feel free to dump on him and the team anytime.
yeah dig up some rumors, ideas, and inside info instead of write ups like this.
Hahaha! Sweet!!!
By that, what I mean is... Sweet, that the fans are blasting the reporters! I been screaming that for a loooong time!
Sweet!
As far as us not protecting the lottery pick... Yes, it would have been great to have it but you gotta give up something to get something.
+ we got Curry!!!
Imagine how good Curry will be this coming year.
Imagine how you guys would have been blasting Isiah if Curry got this good with the Bulls, we didn't pull off the trade and the Bulls went to the Eastern or NBA finals.
I think the more valuable asset was the determinatin to make the playoffs (which we likely would have done if it weren't for the almost unprecedented rash of injuries) NOT planning on being a lottery pick.
Oh yeah!
PS - Yeah! Do your job man and get us some real news. If you had a reputation for doing that you might have more that 3 people posting comments here. LOL!
But yes, that would be great! Good idea David and MJ! Does anybody know where we could find this kind of info. I would be there instead of here. All off season.
Come on Alan man! Get us some stuff!!!
Alan .. its gonna be the last freaking pick. Eat that.
I'm not worried about the draft. It was an honest mistake made be Isiah, but I'm more worried that Isiah won't do anything this off-season
One other note to Alan . . .when you blog, the intention is a two conversation. You have now been challenged by your readership, how about a response?
Knicks should look into making a trade with either Portland or Seattle. Both have 2 2nd round picks this year. This draft is deep and these picks are close to the top of the 2nd round. They can go after what they really need. They need a guy to block shots and Sean Williams is the best in the draft at that. He has been labeled as a head case, but we need to take a serious look at him. He would be the perfect player for the Knicks in this draft. In trading their one for two 2nds the Knicks will have the option of getting someone else, possibly Herbert Hill, who is solid and has improved every year, at 6'10 he can also block shots and rebound, and has a good attitude. If the Knicks don't have both/one of these players available they can go after a small forward or shooting guard/point guard. Isiah has been great at getting talent late in the draft. Even Trevor who they traded is doing well with Orlando. If the Knicks can't get two seconds for their first, perhaps they can trade Jeffries in a package deal. Also Portland might take James since Nate McMillan coached him in Seattle and was able to use him effectively. Jeffries becomes obsolete with the emergence of Balkman. I think he is a good player but knicks need more rebounding and shotblocking help. Both Sean Williams and Herbert Hill give you these needed skills. Also Seattle and Portland pick 1 and 2 so they might want to pick up just one more player in the first round. They will be more trade friendly.
I think this an opportunity that the Knicks cannot pass up. If they do a hit and miss on Sean Williams they still have another second round pick. They may also be able to package a deal for a player/s or draft picks. Seattle has the 7ft center Sene who can block shots in abundance, they may be willing to part with him for a first round pick now that they are picking number 2 overall. The Knicks can then throw in Jeffries and a first, taking Sene and a second. This would be the ideal situation since they would have a chance at two of the most proficient shotblockers emerging, Sean Williams and Sene. Now that would be a steal of a deal. Then perhaps the Knicks could send James and a second to Portland for their two second round pics (and pick up someone elses contract in portland).
Just a lot of options, Isiah. Please don't go after O'Neal. We don't need two big men down low demanding the ball. It would be better to keep the team together that they have now to build unity and also to keep a young core group together for the next 10 years. That is what championships are built on. Trading away Frye, Nate and any other combination for O'Neal would take away from team moral. It would also undercut the future which Isiah/fans have worked and hoped for for so long. Isiah, do the right thing, we are hoping in you.
