How will Biedrins contract impact D-Lee?
Andris Biedrins and David Lee are fairly comprarable players, though the 7-foot Biedrins is much taller and, therefore, a better shot-blocker. Still, their respective games are predicated on energy, athleticism and terrific instincts that make them very good rebounders. Neither are offensive threats in a one-on-one situation, though I might give Lee the advantage here if he continues to develop that inside-pivot move off the post.
The 22-year-old Biedrins signed on Monday a six-year, $62 million contract with the Golden State Warriors, which puts him over $10 million per.
Is David Lee worth $10 million per?
He'll be a restricted free agent next summer and you know he'll use Biedrins as one of his market comps.
Think about it this way, with the Knicks payroll as bloated as it is, if Lee got $10 mil a year starting in 2009-10, he would be the third-highest paid player on the team behind Zach Randolph ($16 mil) and Eddy Curry ($10.5 mil).

Waive good bye to Taurean Green and Bobby Jones, Fixers. They were put on waivers today by the Knicks. This had to be done now because both contracts would have become guaranteed in August.

Dlee is worth around 6-8 mill. If Walsh made the Zach trade our team salary would have went from "bloated" to under the cap by next June.
Is D.Lee worth 10 mil a year?
Hell to the N.O.
the knicks would be crazy to give Lee 10 mil a year
i love D.Lee's game but not for 10 mil
this is the reason i think walsh was trying to trade him
because he knows the knicks have no plans to
fork over that kind of cash to keep him
goodbye green N jones...
we hardly knew ye.
We have to package Lee with one of the longer contracts (zach, jeffries, curry) and try and get a servicable player with a smaller contract..We try and make the best of it until 2010 and then we make some serious moves...Come on people wake up

A sad day, Fixers. Newsday has been consumed by the Evil Empire.
Cablevision should be renamed Engulf and Devour. Now Jimmy has a print and internet mouthpiece to help him manage his image...
Lawd have mercy! I can't believe I actually pine for the days when Gulf and Western owned MSG.
Bulljive: People aren't sleeping simply because they disagree with you! I would want more than a "sevicable" player for Lee alone. We need to cut salary, but giving away David Lee makes no sense. I would have preferred the "Zach for a draft pick" deal to that!
We had a GM who made knee-jerk deals and now some are asking for the same from Walsh. I, for one, am glad that Donnie is showing patience. Let's see what he does over a longer period of time.
david lee is worth 5 yr 30 mil, but if i was the knicks i wouldent give that to him unless he shows this year that he can make a shot. and the warriors are crazy for giving biedrins a 62 million dollar contract, it makes me sick how athletes are paid so much with out deserving it. kobe lebron paul williams kg those guys are worth evry penny.
Lee is my favorite Knick player ... but 10 mil a year I think not! I think it's time to start gift wrapping him and sending him elsewhere before the season starts while there is still value for him.
Lee is great.
BREAKING NEWS!!!!!

NYC!!!!!!!! Stay tuned for more!!!!!!!
Peaceman
what are you talking about?
you got some inside info?LOL
artest just got dealt to houston for #1 pick
and bobby jackson
do you think houston did that
to trade him NY?LOL
i wish walsh would go get Josh Smith
Nah Artest is a Rocket. Unbelievable. Well at least we got Duhon.
Lee is great player between his rebounding, attitude, outlet pass and ability to finish hard around the hoop. That being said I can not justify locking him up for a lo9ng term deal whether 10 mill a year or not. My main reason agianst is his lack of lateral defense and shot blocking. With players at the 4 spot getting quicker big men need to be quick enough on the perimeter to stay with their man.... Lee is not. He has shown the discipline to work on parts of his game (free throws, jumper) over the years but somethings a massive heart and love 4 the game can not make up for. It's not a huge knock on Lee it just is what it is. can he be a starting power forward in this league? For certain! But to ink him to a long term when his ceiling as a player is limited is shortchanging his value. Teams and more importantly the fan base like what he brings on the court and stands for off of it. Lets get a pick or something while we can before we get saddled in to a long term contract with staret type pay for a player who is somewhat one dimensional.
Still dont't know how to feel about the balkman deal. I was hoping that he was going to the Nets in some sort of deal for Sean Willams. As much as I hear people hate on Balkman. His name came up a lot in trade rumors lat year around the leagyue.. For teams with a good core he is one hell of an energy guy off the bench. And who knows maybe with some consistant burn (thanks zeke) he can turn into a lock down defender.
Hey Alan,
happy to discover the much needed Knicks coverage. The Post just wasnt doing it for me. Keep up the good work.

What is more important, saving a first rounder, or getting rid of a $48-million obligation? Removing Zach for a 1st round pick would have put more pressure on Lee in his contract year. Great move. Would have allowed Curry to roam the paint on his own. Good move. Would have forced Gallinari to play at the 4, spreading the floor for D'Antoni's system. Good move.
Holding onto our 1st round pick contradicts Walsh's short term goals. Walsh guaranteed that we would be competitive. A competitive team would either put us in the playoffs or give us a low probability to secure a lottery pick.
Reduce payroll, have 3 guys playing for contracts, spread the floor when Gallinari/Jeffries plays the 4.
We should have traded Zach for that first rounder.
AH Love the Blog Man, Good Work.
After giving Duhon 6 million how can they not give David Lee 10?
I think David Lee is going to become a 15 and 12 guy in this system.
I willing to play anything out until the trade deadline and/or next summer as long as we dump Marbury before camp.
Great character, great effort, but not for $10m per.Maybe $7m.
Then again, who on this team has a higer value than him?
We have quite a way to go!
Realistically, I don't think ANY team would pay $10M for David Lee, so here's hoping they can sign him for under $8M when the time comes. Biedrins is a starter; Lee is a 6th man and not worth $10M. And here's hoping they can get deals this summer for Z-Bo, Marbles and James.
DTR
It all comes down to if we don't make the playoffs. I don't think any one is guaranteed to stay after couple losing back to back seasons.
Dave Lee will not get 10 mill from any NBA team, unless he happens to find a jumper....at this stage of his life...that is not happening either. It would be like asking Curry to "Jump.". In other News;
Kings basketball president Geoff Petrie issued a statement Tuesday afternoon. "We've had some very positive discussions with Houston involving Ron, but no trade is imminent at this time," Petrie said.
Reached by phone Tuesday afternoon, Jackson – who will earn $6.09 million in the final season of his contract – said he had just been told of the likely trade.
"I got wind of it, but it's not done yet," said Jackson, the point guard who was a fan favorite with the Kings from 2000 to 2005. "It's a possibility. I don't know yet."
Good post Harlem, I couldnt agree more...
Get rid of anyone we can, the definition of stupidity is doing the same thing over and over an expecting different results.
Clear it all, if anyone is dumb enough to want DLee package with with Z-slap and lets get on with it.
If you need a model to follow look at the Nets, there is a team that wants to be good now and set up with some 2010 money.
Keeping 2010 alive....
With the Bulljive
I dont agree with alot of you.
especially harlem and bulljive.
someone is going to want zach randolph, we don't have to jump at the first offer.
thats exactly what the old regime did.
enough with teh quick fixes, they rarely turn out great.
and why would we even want david lee to have a fabulous year ?
then we'd have to compete with the rest of the leagues 11 million a year offers when he becomes a restricted free agent next year.
Good AM Fixers!
The only Fixer I've recently Co-Signed is WIllis. Who more often than not, makes solid and reasonable contentions that are usually backed up by factual data.
@Sunil, I will Co-Sign your post. HarlemMD knows he's my Dawg and I Love him dearly, but this notion of getting rid of assets for nothing is just not sound fiscal policy. You cannot and should not run a business or your peronal life in that manner. Secondly, David Lee is a servicable player, and a nice piece to a Player's Puzzle that has some horses, but this inflated view of DLEE is ridiculous. He is a solid role player! BIg B with the Warriors is an athletic 7 foot player. With the emphasis on ATHLETIC 7 FOOTER, who will be surrounded by a whole bunch of GUNSLINGERS...Very few bigs possess his ahtletic ability, but even he is not worth that kind of dough...Lastly, whoever stated the Nets are a model to follow needs to take another look. At this juncture, we have no clue who or what the Nets will become. VCARTER is their Star, need I say more...Plus you roll the dice with Youth. Their TEAM'S future is as MERKY as ours...Such lunacy! Patience Gentlemen, patience!
ONE LOVE
Keep it POPPIN
Lee is definitely worth 10 million per, although it would be great if we could sign him for less. The guy scores at an average level for a power forward, has a 62% career ts%, is a top 20 rebounder in the league, with good ancillary stats, and excellent +/- stats. Guys like that don't grow on trees.
Really, the truth is that both Lee and Biedrins are probably worth more than 10 million, but the low usage nature of their games disguises their value somewhat.
Although I doubt the general public sees it that way.
As a GSW fan your comparison is a bit lacking on a few key level. There are some reasons Biedrins is a more highly valued player...
Biedrins, is a true center, Lee a "smallish" power forward or a slow small forward. There are a lot of quality forwards, quality centers are more difficult to find.
Lee is a perfect off the bench, high-energy player, Biedrins is a potential starting center.
Biedrins is 3 years younger and at 22 he has gotten better each year in rebounds and points, had he gone to college, he would have been in this year's rookie class. As Biedrins' body matures he is likely to be an even more dominant force.
Lee is a nice player, better free throw shooter, high FG pctg, but Biedrins' FG pctg is higher, does more with fewer shots.
Finally Biedrins' contract is closer to $54 million ($9M per year), with incentives it can get into the $60. So the question is, should the Knicks sign Lee for $7-8 mill a year? That will depend on the market for forwards next year and Knicks needs.
Biedrins is a much better player and a more valuable piece than David Lee will ever be.
Beidrins is much taller (7 ft versus 6-9 for Lee) , much younger (he just turned 22, Lee is 25), and posted the highest FG% in the NBA in the past 13 seasons. Beidrins blocks more shots and had the 5th highest rebound rate in the league last year. And, he is more durable. Plus, he fills a much more important position than Lee -- he's a true center. Lee is a undersized PF at best. I don't even think David Lee will ever be as good as Biedrins is right now as a 22 year-old. I know Biedrins plays on the West Coast, but please, do your homework.
If David Lee's agent uses Andris Biedrins as a salary comp, he'll be laughed out of the negotiating room.
Why hasn't Lee been traded for a 1st rounder or a young guard with upside like Conley Jr or Lowry?
They will never pay him like a starting PF and they need to egt under the cap
@ Owen - your statistics show that Lee has a value greater than what many people perceive just watching him - it may not be the Knicks, but someone will offer him a contract that will be surprising to some people because of this.
Like any player, Lee's strengths fall into specific areas - his lack of shot blocking is a problem if your center is grounded (hello Eddy). With the right fit he could have a very successful career as a starter. But I'm not sure where he fits into the Knick's plans, especially when they didn't jettison Randolph. Unless they are waiting until the regular season to assess what they have.
WOW Knicky I just read your post right before I was about to hit send, it's clear great minds think alike......
This article reminds my why I dont' miss the new york sports pages, they'll print anything on a slow day...
Let's see....Biedrins is both younger and more experienced...Biedrins led the league in FG%, on significantly more FGA's.... Biedrins is a legit 7 footer who can guard both 4's and 5's, Lee is a college PF who is overpowered by your average NBA 4's....Biedrins is a proven starter on a playoff team who beat the one seed last year, David Lee is a key component of one of the worst basketball teams in recent memory....David Lee is one of those players you sign when you have a bad team and you need to bring in some bench hustle and locker room cohesion, not without value....Andris is one of the top 5 young centers in the league....
oh and Andris dates some eastern european supermodel and David Lee picks up skanks in the East Village....i believe that's game, set, and match....
i think new york is mesmerized that there's actually a white guy playing for the knicks in the garden who can throw down a few dunks...
everyone keeps talking about 60 million is too much money for Biedrins, but no one ever mentioned about the worthlessness of the US dollars now days. the Euro exchange rate is at a rediculous 2:1, i don't think the players and their agents are dumb enough to accept any offer that's less than 2x what Euro teams are offering. Remember: TAX FREE!! another reason it cost so much more to keep mid-level players from going over seas now days. NBA players are in the 45% tax bracket...FORTY-FIVE PERCENT!! imagine someone taking 45 cents away from you for every dollar you make...the economy is bad, the guy needs some security. I say sooner or later all mid-level guys are gonna be asking for 10 mil a year of the economy does not bounce back soon...

Peaceman
what are you talking about?
you got some inside info?LOL
NYC,
Peaceman knows so little, it's hard to ascertain at any given time how little Peaceman truly knows.
But one has to give Peaceman credit. He's consistent. Consistently wrong. But that's what's so right about Peaceman.
His terminal inaccuracy.
I see very few similarities between Biedrins and Lee. That is one of the worst comparisons I have heard from a national writer. Biedrins is a better rebounder, better shot blocker, younger, and plays C.
