Ciao Stephon, Hello Pat Jr.?

Starberman came off vacation time to reiterate Stephon Marbury's desire to play in Italy next season, after his Knicks contract expires.

As "david" reported to us from Donnie Walsh's meeting season ticket holders' meeting, Walsh said Marbury has a clean slate. If Marbury is there for training camp, it'll be the big story, of course. Sort of the opposite effect that Brett Favre had when he arrived at Jets camp.

* *

The Ron Artest trade to Houston was officially announced yesterday and there is some speculation that Patrick Ewing, Jr., who was part of the five-player deal with Sacramento, may be waived.

If that is the case, could we expect Walsh to extend a training camp invitation to Lil Pat?

Partial re-post:

@ Alan -

Is there any way to have Milan pick up his remaining contract and ship him over there this year? What, if any, rules are in place for this type of situation?

Life - a piece on Melo, kind of in line with our Enter the Dragon Thread:

http://www.hoopsworld.com/Story.asp?story_id=9762

Could things get bad enough over there that a divorce is necessary? (Didn't know Boeheim popped off as well) What about Marbury for Carmelo? What if Denver is tanking, January - February is a bloodbath, Marbury is still here and has half a year left on his contract, Denver's brain trust has had enough of Anthony AND Karl........

just bloggin

And in other news, looks like Jimmy Boy is going to have some splainin' to do:

http://www.nypost.com/seven/08152008/business/activist_fund_buys_stake_in_cablevision_124589.htm

I would love to be able to pick up Pat jr.- Look at some of the son's of players right now in the league- Luke Walton and Damien Wilkins - they're not stars, but they seem to know how to play, and they play with a pashion.

GIve me 6 & 6 and some intangibles, and that will do as much to help the knicks win as Zachs 20 & 10!

He would fit in perfectly in D'Antoni's system. He has a somewhat similar skillset to Shawn Marion (minus the 3-point shooting). He could be perfect at the 4 when they're running that small ball offense like he did with the Suns. Ewing and Wilson Chandler can flourish in this system.

Here's a thought. While I am not a fan of Stephon Marbury, lets not forget he does have the tools to be successful in this system.

Is he a locker room cancer? Absolutely. But just as Donnie wants to do with Zach Randolph, wouldn't it make sense to take Steph into the season, as the starter, have him put up numbers (just like Zach) and then get his value up as both an expiring contract, and as a contributor?

Trust me, I don't want Steph or Zach on this squad, because frankly, both are selfish players and they just are bad for the team from a chemistry and reputation perspective.

But if we (Knicks fans) have to deal with them for half a season, and they are actually contributing, why not? As long as the ultimate goal is to trade both, why not "use" them to get their own values up to ship them out?

We're paying them a goldmine, might as well kick them in the ass to contribute before send them packing for talent that actually meshes with what Donnie and Mike are trying to build.

Wow...Berman must have been foaming at the mouth when he handed that last article in. What a hack!

I'm all for bringing in inexpensive young and/or inexperienced players - they don't cost anything in the overall scheme of things and if one of them surprises, then you add a piece for nothing. Jr. has a lot of positives - why not give him a look?

Willis - we discussed Anthony on a previous post - I think he could be a key player on the right team. He needs someone else to be the franchise guy and a situation he buys into (like Team USA). Think of a McHale role on the old Celtics (without the all-league defense) - just play a technically superb game, pile up numbers and let someone else handle the "making his teammates better" thing.

Brian - I think that's D'Walsh's plan. Personally, I would liked to have seen a more decisive break with the past, but I'll wait and see - I hope D'Walsh is right.

I don't know much abt Pat's kid but isn't his game the same as Balkman's ?

JohnQ - I'd have to check to be sure, but I think Jr. shoots it a little better.

Yeah, maybe Patty Jr. can come to New York and get Daddy's old Scores club gig.

Marbury, a man well-schooled in abusing the ladies, will be able to offer Patty Jr. all the tips he needs to follow in daddy's shoes.

Marbury out lasted Don Chaney, Lenny Wilkens, Larry Brown and Isiah Thomas the last 5 years. My fear is he going to outlast Mike D as well.

Anonymous,

You better be careful man. All this bitterness is starting to make you sound like Vescey.

@ John Q

Please don't engage the Troll...all we'll get are more references to Fat Eddy, the Coney Island Cupcake, etc.

...And a bunch of regurgitated nonsense that just take's up blog space.

Mentioned before: Nothing says "Skip Me" like a post by Anonymous!

I'm just joking everybody. I love the Knicks even though I think they stink. It would be great to have Pat Jr. in the Garden. I still think we should get rid of the cancer Starbury but I love the direction we are going in. OK, I'm going back to being myself again. In other words, I'm going to disrespect everybody on here as much as possible. But just let it be known, that I love the Knicks and what they are doing now.

Yes! Bring in Pat Jr.

This franchise has really disrespected Patrick these past years.

They never should have traded Pat for Glen Rice. Yes Rice was the very first over priced aging star of yesterday of this modern losing era. (Fixers : list your favorites here: Remember Vin Baker?)

They should have reached out to Ewing since then. But a s we saw with the Anuka Brown scandal, the Knick Org has been like school on Sunday: No Class! (Hey Hey Hey)

Keep David Lee, Gallo needs a few years to mature people!

PG must be solidified.

Marbury or not. I personally am done with Marbury! Take your smirk and brag in the press in some smaller market. If Im Donny I trade Marbury to the coldest city in the NBA for whatever you can get.

Now we hope Coach gets Edie involved and Jamal gets his.

The bench QRich still has game but he has to lose weight. As a runner i know that even 10 pounds adds lots of pounding on the feet and joints. Compare a picture between then and now Q-Rich.
I still think he can be a gamer. QRich work on your jumper.

Nate is Great! Perfect of the bench. Nate can hit the 3. And he brings the energy!

Zach- I dont know if he can do it or wants to, but Zach should either learn to run more or just be a go to half court set up guy.
In a team game I believe Zach will hit the jumper and he's a solid post and rebound player.

the rest of the bench wait and see. I havnt seen anything from Jeffries I dont know Duhon.

See you in November

Just read the Rag Marbury article.

UGHHH!!!

Marbury bragging that he can make 20 million NOT to play!
What a coward. Jerome James Marbury!

And such an insult to the Real Knick Fans!!! of which He WISHES he could claim to be one.

Does he realize he has all this power over Donny because NOBODY in the league wants him?

If there is a reincarnation, Jerome James Marbury is going to come back as the bug that he is.

@willis, life, and all:

just to be clear, are you/we supporting the idea of marbury for nello, and thus forfeiting the 2010 possibilities?

it is an intoxicating proposal, and could spell doom or glory for this franchise. my inclination would be to not do the deal (i certainly ragged on nello in here), but this would be a very tough call to make.

would we be grabbing the bird in hand, or swallowing the poison pill?

Sec - I'm really just surmising, playing out the scenarios. I have to say, I am pretty pessimistic about LeBron making it to MSG. You've heard it, I've heard it, JayZ and the King have an understanding. Now, yeah, things change, its still a ways away, and Ratner has another 500 million plus that he has to raise in the financial markets to build his arena. As you know, money world wide is tight, Ratner could have real problems. More water under the bridge. Yet..... I'm just not feeling optimistic that the Knicks land LeBron. I look at it this way - LeBron was given the keys to the NBA from draft day, all the money possible in endorsements, and a guarantee of max money whenever contract time comes around. What doesn't he have? A ring, and the rest of the popular culture venues in his pocket. Figure the Knicks and the Nets are going to be equivalent in terms of New York marketing, rosters, distance to title contention (roughly). What's left? Becoming the Rap star, actor, movie producer, etc.... and that Jay Z gives him. Walsh? not so much (as they say).

So......I'm just saying. Its probably going to be somebody else, so who's that somebody going to be? Either way, Walsh's plan is sound, I just don't know that it nets (sorry for the pun) LeBron in 2010.

The other real scenario is DWade - damn he looked good against Greece - controlling the game with the D, with the pass, with the score. Riley could be out soon, depending on what he puts together down there, D Wade is happy or not. Alot of risk, we'll take him if Riles can't get it done.

Re: the Greece game, if D'Antoni brings the Redeem Team scheme to the Knicks, I'll be happy.

alright...

anyone in here willing to deal jamal for a signed and traded ben gordon, assuming you are taking on a 5yr/55mil deal?

i assume the majority answer is a resounding NOOOOO.

Get a Grip.
The Knicks are bottom feeders the next two years!
2010...a pipe dream to the 10th power! Lets start the season with looking forward to new Management picking # 1 in the 2009 draft!
Duhon and Gullinari are not rideing on White Horses. We have the worst team in the East on paper.....don't kid yourself!
We are stuck with Marbury and James.......pray that this season goes by fast...as it's gonna be UGLY as Mak's Wife. I would be happy to be wrong.....but no matter what.....the Knicks can't break any sane Fan's heart this year! This should be our theme song; http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gTNfmGNeLKQ&feature=related

Cleveland just completed a great trade by acquiring Williams from the Bucks. They finally have a devastating spot-up shooter. LBJ/Williams will go to the finals this year. Bad news for Knick fans. I doubt he'll leave a shooter like Williams to come to NY. He's going to make his money no matter where he is playing. We don't have that leverage anymore.

To all you Marbury haters: why don't you pool your resources and pay Cablevision $20 million so Marbury can be released. What did you say, you don't have $20 million? I didn't think so.

Who wants to throw $20 million in the garbage for Chris Duhon, Anthony Roberson, Nate Robinson and Jamal Crawford?

Get a clue. Marbury is still the best guard on this team. Having him play in his walk year makes perfect sense. He won't be a distraction because his next contract depends on his good behavior.

Just like the Giants will regret getting rid of Shockey, the Knicks will regret letting go a very good player with no true backup plan.

Gordon = Crawford - handle, I vote nay, they both are insufficient.

(and isn't it funny how the Bulls and the Knicks are such strange dopplegangers of one another, its like the two teams are twins in the same Hell-Womb, swapping parts and pain in equal measure. Some kind of freakish curse from the battles of the 90's. Perhaps neither team will be good, until both teams will be good, perhaps it will be our turn to thwart them. Which FA chooses which team in 2010?)

Training Camp at Skidmore College:

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=3537604

After watching the Olympic team destroy Greece and Spain, I'm annoyed that Miami has a player like Dwayne Wade on its roster, yet it gets the right to draft a top player with the #2 pick. Miami was clearly tanking its games, now it will get a chance to return to prominence quickly with Wade, Michael Beasley, Marion and possibly Stephone. Miami won the championship two years ago and still couldn't sell out their home games last year. The New York market would guarantee sellouts at premium prices for at least 3 years with a championship. But we don't have that kind of talent and we won't have it for a while.

Meanwhile, because of our terrible season last year and these horrible draft rules, we have to hope that Danilo Gallinari becomes a player. After suffering for 7 years in the toilet (and really longer than that, because 1999-2000 was a fluke), we deserve better drafting opportunities than this guy. No disrespect to him, but we should have a "can't miss" player, not a marginal talent

Also, Seattle had the #2 pick last year and gets the #4 pick and the next year. Rules should disallow teams to pick in the top three picks (with their original pick, not traded pick) in consecutive years.

These draft rules must change.

@willis-

i like the doppelgang allusion, and the idea that the two teams fates seem entwined (and there is the odd d'antoni hiring situation to add to this story). hopefully they are both on the verge of rising from the ashes together.

yeah, i vote nay on crawford-4-gordon too,.i was a huge gordon fan coming out of uconn, but for whatever reason, he has not developed into the second coming of rip hamilton, he doesn't seem to have either the killer or the team gene.

on the other hand, despite my recent trashing of carmello, i think you do have to make the marbury swap if it were to become available. the risk is high, the reward possibly even higher, but when you have little to lose (other than another 4 years in hell) i think you have to roll the dice on this one.

getting back to crawford, and a point i have made before here, i think we can expect him to opt out after this season (especially with all the new euro money flying around). this will make many fellow fixers jump for joy, but i will not be part of that chorus.

and speaking of euro money, surely the nba will have to adjust the cba/cap in order to compete. so with crawford likely off the books, z-bo likely gone, and a greater cap allowance, the knicks will be like a kid in the candy store with a pocketful of cash.

I see Ben Gordon as exactly the kind of limited player (shoot first, low efficiency, defensively challenged, undersized) that the Knicks have overpayed for the last few years. I fail to see any upgrade over Crawford, and he'll have a longer contract. He gets a nay from me.

We need to use Stephs expiring contract as leverage. Even if we are competitive. Since, the only thing we can espire to is being competivive not campionship bound anymore. Is to use Steph's 21 Millexpiring contract to make a trade in February for a couple month tryouts. What player I dont know. But, he can't be any worse then what we seen for seven losing seasons.

Comments like that always go unnoticed till someone points them out. He should have elaborated if he meant Euro players (which are not all white). Poor choice of words. We need winning basketball players regardless of origin and race. It's a shame some folks don't see it that way.

++++

Knicks are bottom feeders for the next two years. That's news, Peace.

News some meticulously (get out your Webster's) laid out for you about a year ago. Time and time again. Nice to see that you've finally seen the light.

About a year too damned late.

Don't worry, Peace. Everyone knows you're sorry for not catching this fact until now.

TAR-wise, the A stands for Alleged.

Alleged, Peace, Alleged.

Or do you feel guilty?

Class dismissed. You may now exit.

Hey Alan, do you got beef with Marc Berman?

marbury is still the best player on the team, period. no need to respond to you turds. All of you know this. Even with the cancer talk and the loses, and Isiah. Put your money on the table and bet, the best player on the Knicks, bar none... Marbury. So when you know that, you know all of your endless, senseless comments, don't matter, its always been stupid to suggest we trade marbury. we should be RESIGNING HIM. Look at the league and make sense of the league and what you need. Nate robinson will never amount to anything much in this league, he's never been Marbury's competition, any ball coach knows this. GMs may be put off by Marbury's recent antics off court, but on court top 5 pg. Period. this spring when all of you dummies wanted a PG in the draft, I didnt understand why, because writers were saying that? what does a writer know? they report, AFTER something happens..Crawford is by FAR our worst player, because he thinks he's good, so he kills us every night. No defense, weak moves to the whole, never shows up vs top SGs, accept that one 53 pt night against garbage Miami, and wade had 37 that night...Crawford, you blind idiots has been the real killer on this team.

when Marbury said last year he might go overseas, you all called him nuts, and wrote comical posts. Now that 17 free agents have left the Nba to sign overseas, how stupid does he look now? Maybe, he's a future thinker, like me, and can see trends, not a follower, like all of you. Now ballers are getting offered comparable deals overseas, how stupid does he sound now? Cant stand how you fake fans ran my knicks organization to the ground, you the fans. You cheered when we signed Isiah, and Zach, and Curry, three mistakes, one month after getting marbury we get crawford, bad move, then we trade away two top 5 picks for Curry, you all cheered, why should I listen to any of you now, you guys don't have a clue, all your berman jokes are hiding the fact you're just clueless and you're waiting for someone to tell you what to think about your alleged favorite team. You guys have been wrong. booing Gallinari, cheering crawford????. liking Nate???? NYC doesn't deserve a winner, cuz the fans know nothing
