Minutes Men
The honeymoon's over for Mike D'Antoni. Oh that first week in Saratoga Springs was so pure and idealistic. The optimism rose like Wilson Chandler over Jermaine O'Neal.
[Ooh, that dunk was nasty, wasn't it?]
But here's where we get down to business. Where the daily grind will show true character. The roster moves were mostly a joint process with D'Antoni and Donnie Walsh. But the lineup, the rotation and, most of all, those precious minutes? That's all on Mike.![]()
So here we go.
For opening night tomorrow against the Heat, the Knicks will start like this:
PG - Duhon
SG - Crawford
SF - Richardson
PF - Lee
C - Randolph
First two off the bench will be Nate Robinson and Wilson Chandler. First big off the bench will be Malik Rose (more on that in a minute). At my count, that's eight. D'Antoni is known to play as few as eight and only as many as nine in the regular season.
We know rookie Danilo Gallinari will get his first taste in this game. Don't expect him to get a ton of time, but if he's looking as comfortable as he has in the practice scrimmages, you never know. D'Antoni is concerned with exposing Gallinari to the home crowd and the bright lights of opening night. It'll be the kid's first taste of an NBA game since the summer league back in July. Kind of asking a lot.
OK, so if that's nine . . . who are we leaving out?
Right. As John McCain would say, "That one."
Stephon Marbury is on this roster and is certainly talented enough to provide scoring for the Knicks, who are going to need it. And I'm not at all suggesting that Marbury doesn't play (or shouldn't for that matter). What I am saying is where do you play him in this rotation -- where in the regular season, starters such as Duhon and Crawford are going to get 35-to-38 minutes a game -- and will he be effective as someone who only gets 10 to 14 minutes per game? Do you get more out of playing Mardy Collins in those minutes, especially because, as a big guard, he can defend the likes of Dwyane Wade?
I know, Mardy over Marbury? Bloghost are you out of your freaking mind serious?
Hey, D'Antoni is right now playing Rose over Eddy Curry. He made that clear Tuesday after practice when he said Curry is not in his rotation plans right now. That was news to Eddy.
Couldn't help but notice that Anthony Roberson saw a lot more time in the practice scrimmage today than we've seen of him during the preseason. Then again, maybe I'm just noticing him a lot more now. Despite this, he'll be among the inactives tomorrow, along with injured Jared Jeffries and the most expensive practice player in the NBA, Jerome James.

In case some of you haven't gotten enough from the riotous Harrison Police Chief and the Isiah Thomas story, our man Anthony Rieber filed this for the website earlier today.
Programming note: Hot Rod Boone will be live blogging from the game Wednesday night.

Im sick of this already. Stephon should be getting the most minutes off the bench. He is most effective when he plays alot of minutes, he should be getting 30 minutes off the bench every night, he is better than Nate even though he has been playing great (remember that was preseason) so Steph should be first off the bench. If its offense Dantoni wants, put Starbury in. He is the knicks biggest offensive threat and remember the knicks dont play defense, so they need alot of offense. Another thing is, Stephon has good defense, if you look at it Stephon is a better fit in Dantoni's system than Crawford. Marbury has better DEFENSE, better offense and Steph and Duhon have looked great together.
Knicks starting lineup should be:
pg:Chris Duhon
sg:Stephon Marbury
sf:Quenton Richardson
pf:Zach Randolph
C:David Lee
First two off the bench would be Crawford and Chandler followed by Nate.
First..
We are gonna be bad, i'm talking really bad..
Keeping 2010 alive
with some Bulljive
6. Nate Robinson
7. Wilson Chandler
8. Stephon Marbury
9. Malik Rose
That's the rotation.
10. Danilo Gallinari
11. Mardy Collins
12. Eddy Curry
End of the bench. Gallinari should replace Rose if he's not a bust. Not sure where Jared Jeffries fits. Curry won't see consistent minutes all season and rightfully so.
I've seen it all, Sergio is showing Marbury some luv..

crawford over marbury? you got to be kidding. crawford plays no defense and has the worst shot selection on the team. isiah was the only coach dumb enough to start crawford. if d'antoni does start crawford it will only last a week or two, and then he'll be back on the bench. crawford is garbage, instant garbage off the bench.
Damn, Eddy's confidence and trade value is going to be destroyed.
It's incredible to me how many quality yet mediocre rotational players are on the Knicks. They're like a whole team of the fifth, sixth or seventh guys for the rest of the league. It would be great if we could make some deals with teams that are really lacking in depth for some draft picks or cap room...
@ anonymous...
you are so right! on all accounts... i hope we don't kill eddy's trade value. and all we are is a team of role players. we need to somehow find a way to turn those role players into stars.
by the way, to anyone who says play starbury over anyone... have you not been watching this team??? he is EVERYTHING that is wrong with NY knicks basketball.... let's get back to being quality individuals who make up a quality team (not in terms of wins but in terms of comraderie). then we can talk about trying to get some wins... look at portland... that's our blueprint!
Noooo...this is what I think D'Antoni will do. If it were up to me, Crackbury would be banned from the team along with Jerome James. Just like what Indiana did with Jamaal Tinsley and Chicago did with Tim Thomas.
lets start the Ricky Rubio fan club already.
while I'm excited for opening night, I'm more excited about the prospect of Rubio/Gallinari for the future of our franchise.
RUBIO IN '09 DRAFT!!!
one thing that I have been thinking about lately is the possibility of Carmelo Anthony. If the Nuggets suck this year, which I feel they will without Camby, would Denver consider trading Carmelo to rebuild? I know, it seems far-fetched, but isnt Carmelo from Brooklyn? I'm sure he would LOVE to play here. And if we get him, that may entice Lebron or Bosh to come here. And hopefully we can get Rubio...and..and.....and none of this crap is going to happen cuz we're cursed. DAMMIT
LMAO at some of you who thought Marbury was gonna start for D'antoni .he was never ever ever never ever never ever ever ever ever ever never ever ever never ever ever never ever ever never never ever ever ever ever ever gonna start for this team. Marbury is not a better sg than Crawford better pg yes and certainly a better player than Duhon but his time in a lead position here in NY is over and was over the moment he walked off that plane. Look at the knicks site they havent mention Marbury once no matter how well hes played .because hes no longer in the teams plans. They are just waiting for that deal to run out or for a chance to trade him.
The starting five was never in question once jefferies went down and I expect to see Nate and Chandler to get plenty of burn.
Knicks are be championship caliber this season.
We now got the good coaching along with the talent and discipline and accountability have been restored to the team. Knicks are gonna be much better and have a favorable schedule. We will also be exciting and will get a ton of easy buckets in our new and improved system.
Shipping off to NY!
Just watched the Celts banner/ring ceremony. Feels like the Knicks are on another planet. Most of us were kids or not even born when we last saw one in NY.
Hope D'Antoni and this year's Knicks give us something to cheer about. Hope Walsh's plan has us sitting pretty in 2010 because we sure aren't now.
Glad Curry is out of the rotation, any other coach would of started him regardless of how he played. Hopefully he will play well enough to get his butt traded. It begins by showing him that starters minutes are earned. I don't want to go through this every year with him. If he has a good season, he will celebrate by eating all summer and come back so fat that they have to cut a whole in the side of the training facility to squeeze him in. No professionalism, no pride.
Eddy Curry is a lazy underachiever that can't or won't rebound or play defense, but Malik Rose is a has been than can't do anything well.

sorry alan but i think this post is bull. marbury proved himself well this preseason and is gonna get 25+ minutes per game, at the expense of duhon and crawford
Starby, Curry and Snax sitting on the bench and being good about it? No way. What are Walsh and D'A gonna do when they start bitching? The circus known as da Knix will be back in town. Pass me some of Isiah's pills and wake me up when this mess is cleaned up.
DTR
FIRST IT IS FOOLISH for anyone to agree that Marbury should not be starting let alone getting only 10-15 minutes a game.
I don't care how much of a non-factor he was in coach D's mind (coach D was told that Marbury wouldn't be hear at the start of training camp, supposedly --- which would make all the sense in the world NOW why they would sign Robeson and basically annoint Duhon the starting PG spot) the fact of the matter is that he IS here and gives the team best chance to WIN games. That is what we as fans want right...to WIN???
Its funny, instead of threatening to pull Duhon and insert Marbury into the PG spot, they are saying they would rather have him start place of crawford since when the 2 of them play together, Duhon seems to get open looks..hmm..wonder why that is. But the funny thing is that if Steph was to start at PG, Crawford would reap the benefits of Marbury's agressiveness and would have wide open looks all day and can then utilize a quick 1 on 1 move with his defender coming at him if he decides, but if not can shoot the wide open 3. SINCE WHEN IS CHRIS FRIGGIN' DUHON A SHOOTER NOW???
I believe that Duhon WAS GUARANTEED the starting PG spot which is why he can do no wrong. Its as if this guy shoots lights out all of a sudden. And someone please tell me why and HOW is it that Duhon is a winner cause he went to DUKE? Thats some real propoganda BS right there. As a previous poster said...you go on the site and Marburry isn't even mentioned other than being on the roster. Unbelievable....
PLAY YOUR BEST DAM PLAYERS...PERIOD! THIS ISN'T AAU...and we are not trying to instill values into these grown a$$ men.
Alan, should we even believe what your saying about the rotation? you've been wrong like crazy on this blog...no disrespect but you make things sound like they are for real but you kinda mislead....I still love your blog but maybe you should get the facts straight...sorry dude.
And Ronnie...
Hate to break it to you, but Steph is more of "Shooting Guard" then Crawford. Crawford can't even "catch and shoot" coming off screens, that is what a shooting guard is supposed to do. Alan Houston is what a fundamentally sound Shoting Guard can be, you understand now?
Marbury can at least do that. Obviously doesn't have the percentage but fundamentally is more of a "shooting guard" than Crawford is.
Don't worry though, I understand, your not the only one who clearly has no clue about the game of basketball itself. You probably also are one that thinks that Chris Duhon is better suited for this type of system then Steph is right... Like i said, no worries, there are TONS of people who feel that as well.
Crawford can score (has his moments), but is not a typical SG
no starbury fan at all but no way he isn't the first off the bench. takes ballz baby.
Troy -
Crawford looked just fine catching and shooting in the final preseason game and all of last season. You guys read something and cling to it regardless of whether its proven and its just sad .These beat writers have all of you regurgitating their garbage.
Crawford cant catch and shoot but in his first year here in NY he made a 185 threes playing sg next to marbury who dominated the rock.He finished 5th in three pointers made playing in a slow halfcourt system while Q played in D;'antoni's system running wild and led the league and he made 226 . But somehow Crawford cant catch and shoot . lol Just please stop the madness.
The knicks dont set that many screens for the wings they are more spot up threes in the corners .Last year to start the season when they were actually running plays they set plenty of screens for Crawford and he was getting 20+ and 6+ assists while primarily coming off those screens until the wheels fell off when marbury lost it.
of course we know how shooting percentage defines your position lol seriously you just make this stuff up after getting out of marburys truck ?
I think Duhon is more trustworthy than Marbury thus he is a better fit for a offense that requires trust among teammates . Marbury is more talented than Duhon until it gets above the shoulders and then Duhon mentally becomes Jordan to Marburys Ricky Davis.
I find it amazing how one of the greatest pg's in history in your eyes is now trying to change position to get into the starting lineup because he cant mentally beat out a journeyman stopgap pg and its simply because no one trusts him.
I actually liked the way Marbury has played this preseason but its too late .No one is willing to put their jobs on the line for him anymore that left when he got off that plane. All he can do is come off the bench this year and do well and hope to get a nice job reference next summer when hes a free agent.
Come on, guys!! Let's start the year on a positive note. I think Coach D'Antoni is doing the right thing by leaving out Eddy Curry from the rotation. It sends a clear signal to the rest of the team that he means business and that past glories don't mean anything. It also tells Curry to put up or shut up. There is no real reason why Curry should not be rebounding like a real center or blocking shots. If it was due to laziness, this will set him right and get him to play well. I won't be surprised if we see every one give it their all. And if there is early success in the bargain, things may take on a shape and may set us rolling, who knows how far.
But we are starting this the right way.
As for Marbury, what Alan wrote is just an opinion. I personally don't think that will happen - Marbury has done everything he has been asked to do so far and there is no reason to change things now.
Thanks Ronnie,
As I figured, no clue about the game of basketball..
"Crawford cant catch and shoot but in his first year here in NY he made a 185 threes playing sg next to marbury who dominated the rock"
Marbury dominating the rock..lets see, sounds like media driven BS to me. STOP it already. All of you clueless fans out there please stop the madness. MARBURY DOMINATING THE ROCK??? And you say that "..these beat writers have all of you regurgitating their garbage". Its a known fact that Marbury has not dominated the rock since he as been with the Knicks. In fact that label left him since he left NJ (and even there, there were reasons to do so which I won't even get into)
Marbury's best year as a Knick was his first year. AFter that, each year he has been asked to change his game, and each year he has done so, those are facts people. Stop listening to fans, media and just plain haters when it comes to Steph and his "Selfishness"
Next - "I think Duhon is more trustworthy than Marbury thus he is a better fit for a offense that requires trust among teammates" Are you "soft" Ronnie, cause that statement right there is soft.
What you are saying is that since his teamates supposedly don't trust him, they will not do good in the system when it is run by Steph. Have you ever played the game Ronnie?
Do you understand that when push comes to shove and your on the court, a teamate could care less about what they feel about you once that ball is moving and action is live. They are focusing on where to go, x's an o's. The fact of the matter is that if Steph was given the freedom to run this offense as Nash did, this team would be a WHOLE lot better off.
What you and others don't seem to understand is that Steph hasn't been "Steph" in about 3 years. Steve Friggin Nash himself was QUOTED right after the D'Antonio signing saying that Steph would FLOURISH in this system cause he brings a different type of style to the postion than he did. You think Nash was thinking about his teamates having to "trust" him in order to make it work
Thanks for proving my point even further - "...Crawford cant catch and shoot but in his first year here in NY he made a 185 threes playing sg next to marbury who dominated the rock.He finished 5th in three pointers made playing in a slow halfcourt system". - Minus the marbury dominating the rock garbage, WHY THE HELL DO YOU THINK HE WAS ABLE TO HIT ALL THOSE 3'S? who was giving him the friggin ball most of the time after BEATING his man and kicking it back out to Crawford?? As I mentioned in my previous post ..."Its funny, instead of threatening to pull Duhon and insert Marbury into the PG spot, they are saying they would rather have him start place of crawford since when the 2 of them play together, Duhon seems to get open looks..hmm..wonder why that is. But the funny thing is that if Steph was to start at PG, Crawford would reap the benefits of Marbury's agressiveness and would have wide open looks all day and can then utilize a quick 1 on 1 move with his defender coming at him if he decides, but if not can shoot the wide open 3"
Lastly - Duhon - If you watch the games CLOSELY (as a matter of fact watch tonight's game) all DUhon does is bring the ball up quickly and then passes off. Even coming off that pick and roll, he RARELY ever has the ability to create something and leave his man which would create open looks for the shooters and for the bigmen cutting to the baskets. And thats in the pick and roll. Forget about 1 on 1. Penetrate deep and kick...simple..Duhon, (and its not his fault) can't do this whatsoever. Now correct me if I am wrong but what made the system special in Phoenix was Nash, the PG. Is it really helping us for our PG to be bringing the ball up quick just to pass it off? Thats not how this system was set up.
@troy:
seriously troy? did u read wut u wrote? its absolutely dumbfounding. im referring to ur description of how the crawford/marbury combo would be effective. have u not seen any knicks games for the past few years? isnt wut u said exactly why the knicks havent been winning? marbury starting, passing to crawford, crawford doing something retarded while playing one on one against his defender. can u not tell after so many years that that formula doesnt work?
i think this might not be the right blog for you. you should try posting on starberman's nypost blog. that place is all about severely retarded morons with dreams of riding marbury's nuts expressing their opinions.
HAHA! troy got OWNED!!!!!!!! you really are an idiot troy. let go of wut marbury was and look at wut he is now, which is nothing. its time for change in new york man. calm down and let it go.

I stand behind Coach D and Donnie Walsh period!
Professional, in shape, compettitive, team players with winning attitudes will play and the fat, lazy, losing whiners will sit until they are discarded, bought out or their contracts EXPIRE!
Watching the preseason and looking at this possible line up makes you wonder how much Walsh and D'Antoni agree on personnel. This summer I assumed that they were completely on the same page, but now I wonder. It's pretty clear that D wants nothing to do with Marbury - even assumed he'd be gone - but Walsh has kept him around. So D either doesn't play him or uses him out of position (if there's any hope of trading Marbury, its not as a 2/3), which means there won't be a trade, Marbury will hang around like a bad smell collecting his money and not playing - for all intents and purposes, the same role as if he had been bought out. Walsh makes a statement that he Burger King James has a clean slate and he wants to see what he can do, so D keeps him on the bench the whole preseason. He obviously doesn't share Walsh's need to evaluate the King's game. Not saying that they are at odds, and they agree on some stuff (Duhon) but so far each seems to be doing his own thing without much thought how it effects the other. Could be wrth watching if things really head south.
As for the concerns about what will happen if Curry, Marbury and other deadwood ride the pine, here's the short answer - nothing. D'Antoni has already made it pretty clear hat he doesn't give a rat's a$$ if players are dissatisfied. Oh, there is one thing - Marbury might go whining to Berman like a little b-tch. I'm sure the team is terrified.
If Eddy Curry was not 6'11", he would be Manuel Uribe.

Eddy Curry is so clueless it's laughable...
If he spent as much time on improving his game and conditioning as he does on his moronic tattoos...maybe he'd be playing.
'Misunderstood"...by whom? All his coaches? The refs? The players who waltz down the lane and finish over him while he stands there like a statue? Perhaps his bathroom scale?
Please don't let me hear anyone say we are hurting his 'trade value'...he has done that all by himself. His trade valie was two worthless players and a first round pick when we got him...now it's a second round pick...maybe...
Here's a tattoo suggestion for his fat ass for next summer:
"Overpaid Lazy Bench Warmer with Too Many Stupid Tattoos"
Or how about this one right across his belly:
"Poster Child for why some players really need to go to a well coached College program for 4 years, to learn the game of basketball, instead of being drafted right out of high school"
...think it will fit?
I hope Eddy Curry's financial manager didn't have all his money invested in AIG stock...because no one will be paying Eddy Curry millions to sit on his fat ass 10 years from now when he's out of the league.
And please don't slander Malik Rose...he is the only player on this team that remotely resembles an undersized Oakley. Yeah he has little natural talent/size, but at least he has pride and plays hard and smart...and WANTS to play. Something Eddy Curry has NEVER done or wanted.
Hey...I wonder...did Mardy Collins say he was stunned not to be starting and that Coach Dantoni hadn't mentioned anything about it to him personally?
You watch how quickly Curry will turn into Jerome James...he has never wanted to play basketball in his life...it's just a paycheck. He will get REAL comfortable on the end of the bench.
My feeling- Troy is right that Jamal is not a very good catch and shoot player.
But Ronnie is right on most everything else. CryBaby is done on this team. It does matter during a game whether you respect the floor General. Crybaby is known for ball hogging and in key mements , turning it over or dribbling off his foot.
Why must we keep reiterating the fact that Crybaby has sunk a number of Hall of Fame players careers.
CryBaby has never won, not because of talent but because of attitude and brains.
So glad D"Antoni has come in and shut him up.
@Pete
that is a great point you make. You get my credit for making it first. DWalsh and D'Antoni already seem to be in a divide.
DWalsh is keeping players and D'Antoni refuses to play them.
Its Early but if some trades dont happen by January, this could get ugly.
The Parrot keeps repeating-if we have paid all of these people to leave NY why cant we just finish off FATSNACK andCRYBABY
so we can just move on.
"You watch how quickly Curry will turn into Jerome James...he has never wanted to play basketball in his life...it's just a paycheck. He will get REAL comfortable on the end of the bench."
Agreed. Big Snacks was the perfect role model for After Snack Snacks. I doubt Curry will ever sign another NBA contract -- he seems quite comfortable with the notion of collecting millions for sitting on his ass.
"My feeling- Troy is right that Jamal is not a very good catch and shoot player."
Jamal is not a very good player period. He is the guard version of Eddy Curry. He has a great crossover, and a VERY streaky touch off the dribble...that's IT. He plays no defense, and doesn't know how to move without the ball, doesn't fill the lane well on a break, and is a mediocre passer at best. Oh yeah...and he's way, way too nice a young man. And just like Curry...there's not a drop of Ewing or Jon Starks or Sprewell or Oakley or Nate's competitive spirit in either one of them.
It's funny how Chicago stymied the Knicks in the playoffs throughout the Ewing era, with the most competitive player ever to play the game(Jordan) beating out one of the most competitive Knicks ever(Ewing), and how now they have ironically dumped these one dimensional, soft, perennial losers on us,(Curry and Crawford) to keep us down for another 10 years.
Say what you will about Marbury...at least the pyscho still got some fire in his belly. He still gets pissed when someone shows him up....even though I doubt he cares how the team does.
All these nice, soft, lazy loser Knicks have to go...Here's hoping Walsh can build this team around guys like Lee, Chandler and maybe Gallo(if he has it). Now we just gotta find some Reeds, Oakleys, Frazers and Starks to fill in the gaps.
No more Mr. nice guys...
Matt,
If there was a tattoo on his stomach it would say "beware, objects in mirror may be bigger than they seem"
@Pete
"Could be worth watching if things really head south."
"If"?
This team is going to be bad....Dantoni knows it...Walsh knows it, and any Knick fan with half a brain should know it too.
Meanwhile, it's obvious that Walsh has decided that no more buyouts this year...who knows maybe Dolan Sr. finally got fed up and layed that one down on Jr. Good...it's a sign of RESPONSIBILITY and ACCOUNTABILITY in the organization...you don't play well...you don't even try? You sit on the bench, you lose all respect, and you never sign another NBA contract.
So Dantoni is doing the right thing, and playing the players who want to play, who are in shape to play in his system, and have some potential future of playing on the Knicks the next few years.
And Walsh has to keep workin the phones to try and find some desperate team foolish enough to trade for our overpaid trash, without taking more of it back in return. Tough job...I doubt he can get much done...
If all Dantoni gets accomplished this season is the continuing development and teamwork of Duhon, Lee, Chandler and Gallo, and getting Nate to finally play a little bit smarter...then he's done all we could ask, even if the Knicks win just 25 games...
If you aren't prepared for a 25 win season, let me suggest a solution that someone else has tried...take a whole bunch of Lunesta sleeping pills right before every Knick tip-off...if that don't help, just blame the fact that you're still a Knick fan on your daughter...
