Starbury fuels the Obama Express
Our jack-of-all-trades staffer Anthony Rieber filed this column for today's Newsday about how Stephon Marbury is the only high-profile New York pro athlete to throw his support to one of the presidential candidates. Starbury's choice is Barack Obama.
Now, how can the McCain campaign use this against the Senator from Illinois...hmmm...Tucker Bounds, have ya seen the 'youtube' on that world wide web thing on that computer ya got there?
It would be too easy of a skit for Saturday Night Live, if only their political comedy was, you know, unbiased. Perhaps there's just nothing funny about Obama.
What about those ears? I mean how can you vote for a president with such funny-looking ears?
[Bloghost note: Now before you political types get all Janeane Garofalo on my a.., take heed that I'm still quite undecided and will be until Tuesday morning. And, quite frankly, my choice is my choice and not something I plan on promoting or even discussing here.]
Getting back to the point, Riebs quotes Stephon saying something multi-millionaires (athletes or not) can easily say but only a few would actually mean. Stephon's words come off as genuine because we know he does know what poverty is and he obviously know what excess is.
Sharing the wealth may be a "socialist tenet," but it also can be considered a moral virtue.
"By him trying to create change and by him trying to spread the wealth as opposed to the rich getting rich and the poor staying poor, he's trying to make it diverse and I believe in that," Marbury told Newsday.
"I pay taxes just like everybody else - half of my money goes to taxes - and I feel like it should go to the people who need it. Me coming from where I come from, I'm aware of the situation that people are in right now, coming from Coney Island and the projects. Me having what I have is a blessing."
We may not agree on the basketball court, but here is something I applaud.

yeah, we want to bash the guy when he acts like an a-- (which unfortunately is a lot of the time), so we should applaud him when he acts like a good person.
even if you don't agree with the guy he's backing - you gotta respect that he is speaking up in a thoughtful manner.
good for you Mos-Steph!
Alan we all know your voting for Mccain- because deep down inside you hate the fact a BLACK MAN will be running the white house...You white people just cant stand that...YES A BLACK MAN RUNNING THIS COUNTRY...YES SIR
hey,he's half white too.

I'm surprised as well and I respect Marbury for it, different generation I guess. Here is a good music video for Obama by Eric Roberson and another video of his...

Forgot to add my name to the post above...
marbury's a good guy. terrible at the team concept but still a good guy.
Come on now, Alan.
You'll be undecided until Tuesday morning?
Then what will be informing your decision - a coin flip, whether or not you see a black cat on the way to the voting booth?
Anyone who is still undecided needs to have their head examined. I mean, what are you waiting for?
Big Tyme,
I'm a little disappointed too - but in reality, the move didn't mean that much - other than sentiment value.
I'd be more pissed off that Ewing, Oakley, Mase, Starks, and Mark Jackson don't have places within the Knick organization. All of those guys embodied what the city's team is all about - toughness, heart, passion, and hard work.
I think we should let the Ewing Jr. thing go...or at least play out. He may be back (crosses fingers).
OBAMA: Half White, Half Black, WHOLE TRUTH!
Let's Go Knicks!
Every Knick fan should chant Patrick Ewing Jr's name for the whole first quarter, to let them know our collective dissapointed and disgust at what Walsh did.
My bad, I meant 'collective dissapointMENT
Alan, how can you be undecided? you've had a year to get to know these two candidates. And they are quite different.
Obama's plan is merely putting the tax level back to Clinton (ie, financially responsible/sustainable) levels. And just for the top 2% of earners.
95% of working families receive a bigger tax cut under Obama than McCain, yet McCain says Obama will "raise your taxes". It's just not true to make an across the board statement like that.
96% of small businesses will NOT see higher taxes under Obama's plan.
"socialism"? When McCain votes for the $700 Billion bail out AND says to use nearly half of that to buy portions of people's mortgages, how is THAT not socialist? When Palin is governor of the state with the most welfare... when she, herself, has pushed for government money to give thousands a year to people just because they live in Alaska (a place with lots of oil)... THAT is "spreading the wealth"
Bunch of hypocrites.
Obama is a thoughtful, steady leader. He has an in-depth plan for this country. http://www.barackobama.com
Undecided, because you know, they're awfully similar
@ BigTyme
Good stuff man. I hope Malik plays like a lil' big man on campus and leads that Redmen (intentional) team to their former glory. Its been a tough go of it for the local hoops - and its about time we had some winners to root for.
Incidentally, your nephew displays some of those qualities I mentioned. He was a great get by Norm.
@ Anthony K
You're right AK, being a knick fan since 1974, it just hurts that the one thing that reminded us of that crew that you mentioned is gone. Hopefully, no team picks him up, although I've heard that Phil Jackson and the Lakers were interested in PE as a back up to Odom. Kind of ironic also that my nephew is playing with one of the sons of a knkick on that team; (Anthony Mason) Anthony Mason Jr. My nephew's name is Malik Boothe with St. Johns (pg)
And you're right, I do think he'll find his way back onto the knicks, and hopefully the knicks will do the right thing and bring Sr. back. I think I'd rather have PE Sr. than Herb Williams, nice guy that Herb is, coaching on my squad...
