Meanwhile, on the court....

Chris Duhon grinned at the question, which suggested that he knew where it was going. He was already new to the team, new to the system and after a month of training camp and exhibition games and a dozen regular season games he was just starting - just starting - to feel like he had everything in command.

Then in one day - poof - the top two scorers were gone and the rotation went through a sudden overhaul with the addition of Al Harrington and several other adjustments on the fly as a result of trading away Jamal Crawfod and Zach Randolph..

"It's kind of like back to square one," Duhon said.

The Knicks haven't had too many days of practice since the trade and Mike D'Antoni opted to give the team off on Thanksgiving following a back-to-back. The team practiced on Friday and then Saturday's game against the Warriors was almost like a practice because Golden State literally played like a dummy opponent. Duhon worked the pick-and-roll with David Lee like they were Stockton and Malone. It resulted in career high assists (22) for Duhon and career high double-double figures (37 points, 21 rebounds) for D-Lee.

D'Antoni then gave the Knicks off on Sunday, though some players did come in to get a sweat and some treatment. Duhon, who didn't practice on Friday, is getting by on a bad back and a sore ankle. Not to mention that he's still got some things to figure out with the new bodies and new roles for guys who have been here.

"You have to get used to how guys play," Duhon said. "I knew what Zach liked to do, Zach could pop, hit the three. I knew where his areas are. I knew what Jamal wanted to do. Now having Will [Chandler] playing more of a two, he’s in a different position, so I have to be aware of it. This is the team we got. It’s going to look bad for a little bit but hopefully we can finally connect and get on the same page.”

They won't see anything like Golden State for a little while. This week brings Portland to the Garden and then a road trip to Cleveland and Atlanta, then back home to host the Pistons on Sunday afternoon. For a roster that is still without Cuttino Mobley (latest I heard was he did not see any specialists on Monday, still waiting to get word on his situation) and Nate Robinson (the Knicks are trying to get him to rest that groin instead of pushing it too soon), there is a great deal of responsibility right now heaped on the shoulders of Chris Duhon.

"We know eventually we’ll all get on the same page to where we can all compete at a higher level together, but it’s going to take time," he said. "If you have guys who are willing to play hurt, that speaks volumes for their character.”

It's nice to have a pass first point guard for a change. It's nice to have a positive article about a Knicks player on the court.

what are the chances mcgrady joins the 2010 party? he's banged
up again, out three weeks. he'll be 31 in 2010. what kind of contract
could he possibly get in the free market.

might be willing to take a three-year deal with NYK at $5M per year.

ok, so now that's nash, mcgrady, lebron, bosh . . . i know, i know
this is two years away. portland's in the house tonight!

if duhon continues this type of play, i might actually start to jump off the brandon jennings bandwagon. we'll see how he stacks up vs. brandon roy n maurice.
we need thabeet anyway !!

I liked the Duhon signing from the beginning, however this guy is even better then I imagined. He's a keeper. Solid decision maker, unselfish pass first point guard, and he's only going to get better.

Just keep playing hard guys, and the majority of New York Knick fans will back you up. I know I sure am.

I'm a big Duhon fan, huis game is excellent and he is smart, but seems he has been terrible on the road, like in Boston wherte he was invisible and the Knix had no leader. If he can play well on the road like at home and get more Knix involved in pick & rolls, then this team can win 40 games....that'd be great!

DTR

Make it unanimous. I love Duhon also.

@Flybanjo: if we sign McGrady to the full midlevel what money would we use to sign Steve Nash?

Duhon has been better than expected. He is solid and a good teammate. Big improvement over MEEEEEbury!

Nice positive article Alan.

WINNERS AND LOSERS, Part 2a

“[t]his is all part of the strategy. Stephon turns down the buyout offer and the Knicks ban him indefinitely until a settlement is reached.”

I admit that I am a bit disappointed that Walsh’s grandmaster strategy, that we all waited so patiently for, gives us the same result -- Marbury off the team with most of his money -- that could have been achieved with less distress months ago. Marbury could have been sent home, told to stay away ala Jamal Tinsley or bought out a long time ago instead of allowing him to remain on the team and the bench as a distraction to the coaches and players and a problem for management. The decision to try to manipulate and embarrass Marbury into giving up $3 - 5 million more than he is willing was incompetent and penny wise, pound foolish. At least in the short term, the Knicks management is a loser once again. In the long term, if LeBron or Bosh brings a championship to the Knicks by 2013, this will just be another chapter in the Knicks Managerial Joke Book. However, if the Knicks handling of this episode in basketball operations is not an anamoly, cap space be damned, because so are the Knicks.

When Walsh first came to town, it was clear that one of his first orders of business was to marginalize Marbury. He was on the right track when he went searching for a new point guard. However, there was no intelligent reason to keep Marbury around the team when Walsh knew Marbury was not part of the team’s future plans. Instead they gambled that shaking Marbury down would be a winning strategy to save a few bucks. It was an emotional decision (by Dolan? His people are claiming this is Walsh’s fault) and a loser from the start.

The Knicks lose; let us count the ways.

1. Walsh hurts his managerial reputation, which was already declining when he left Indiana despite the deference that longevity and white hair affords him. For some reason, no one wants to call Walsh an outright liar; perhaps because when old executives do it, it’s called marketing. But Walsh has been lying about his role in the Marbury affair almost from the beginning. He knew that the objective was to wear Marbury down and get him out. That strategy is not new – it was just executed poorly. Walsh feigned that he was giving Marbury a new chance. He feigned that he and D’Antoni were on the same page. Then when D’Antoni sat Marbury to begin the season after he told the players he would, Walsh acted like he and D’Antoni were not on the same page although the spoke daily. Whether Walsh is a liar, forgetful or just practicing lawerly evasion, it doesn’t help his legacy as a GM.

Yawn.

I like the Duhon signing too. He builds teamwork and team unity. Do you think Duhon stays past 2010?

http://video.msg.com/Videos/New-York-Knicks

I think the question we need to ask ourselves is if Duhon's play continues to ascend, do we really need to sign Nash? At 36? Duhon's already a better defender and he's only getting better on the offensive side. Why spend 5mil on a backup to somebody who's going to play 36-40 minutes anyways? When we can use that money to sign a serviceable big man or to help re-sign Nate and/or Lee?

Damn Lives, I'm definitely not trying to knock you, but I hope you realize how reluctant people are to read those long ass posts. I scrolled right past it without giving it a chance...just trying to help.

McGrady is an interesting possibility, but with the way he seems to be breaking down, I wonder what he'll have left in two years. The idea of being able to talk about what to do with cap space is cool though.

One of the best things about Duhon is that he defends. This team has had a parade of sieves in the backcourt. By actually leading on both ends of the floor - getting a feel for his teammates and trying to put them in a position to succeed on offense, taking it upon himself to man up on the other team's primary ball handler on defense, he contributes in ways that don't show up in a box score. I like him - he's just a gamer. Remember, he never really had a stable role for the Bulls - he was in an unstable three guard situation with Hinrich and Gordon, while here is the undisputed floor leader. I'm curious to see how he grows into the role - he's off to a good start.

Lives - I agree that the handling of the whole situation was not ideal, but the important thing is that Marbury is no longer around the team. I think the details are interesting, but secondary. This paves the way for some more positive, and more relevant to the game on the floor news like this article. Ultimately the legacy of this management team will be determined by the fortunes of the team going forward.

@ on topic

Nice link to video .... how refreshing!!

I think Duhon is in the 2010 plans, plus he's critical in the development of the youngsters now. The only player that we be available would be Nash, but quite honestly by 2010 Nash would be back up to Duhon.

Knicks are going to have some tough decisions to make. Duhon, Lee, Nate, Chandler, and Gallo I think will be Knicks in 2010. With Lee's being the most in jeopardy, because of the dollars he will command.

Knicks with no stars? We did this already (Eisley, Shannon Anderson).

It's gonna be a long time before July 1, 2010. We'll have to get used to the Nets taking over New York.

Devon Harris is a stud.

Rod Thorn = 5-star GM.

Prowler - I don't know if id jump off that bandwagon just yet. Jennings is a wizard with the ball. Right now though, I'd gladly pick Demar DeRozan or James Harden over him. Harden is a pure shot maker and Demar is just a freak.

I do read "Lives" posts and find them interesting, but pompous. His theories are well thought out, but generally presented as absolute fact. There may be a day when I discover that he got it right, but I will likely still believe that he blurs the lines between conjecture and substantiated truth.

What I see is that Marbury is marginalized, we have a pass first point guard, salary cap space is being cleared, team morale is up, our record is better than expected, and a clear direction is being established. If Walsh has blundered on this one, he isn't the first to wrestle with this man called "Starbury!" And if the Knicks do become a force again, his legacy is hardly tarnished!

I was less than thrilled when Walsh was chosen, and wondered if D'Antoni was the right choice, but it's a lot better to be a Knick fan now than it has been for a long time!

I was definitely wrong about Duhon - the guy has been a WAY better player than I expected. He's really giving everything in trying to run this team in the right direction. That said, I'd still like to see him play better against the good teams in this league before I feel comfortable with him as our pg of the future.

Hey Alan,
Great Job on the Blog!
I know this has fallin off the radar, but what about our other useless
ass, Eddy Curry?

Hey Alan,

Whinners and Boozers, Part 19d

...and then the Wizard of Oz told Stephon to bring him the broomstick of the wicked witch of the East, and he would get all his money, and some of Michael Vick's dogs....

@ dude....DD is nice!!! but when i was watching BJ in the mikkie D's game he had me salivating...i watch that game religiously every year and only 1 pg had me so mezmerized...and that was a young baron davis. not even CP3 did it for me that game. i know it was just an exhibition but jennings is the one for me if i'm picking. but i would still take a big man over him. we DESPERATELY need reb & shot blockin'.

p.s - is it me or does ANYONE else realize the knicks get NO CALLS on like out of bounds or charging etc...even on the home court i've come to realize these refs seem to have an agenda. it can't be just me seeing this sh*t!!!! 9 out of 10 calls go AGAINST us if its a bang-bang call. WATCH !!!

is PeaceMan in hideing?
he had tha ballz To call Allan Hahn a racist and cussed him out in public but now his goin Awol
WTF

we run out of gas. had tha game in our hands but fatigue sets in. duhon played well but need help. need reinforcment.

lets go knicks!

The Knicks played VERY well tonight, considering we are playing with 1.5 guards the whole game.

Duhon is superhuman...have no idea how he has the legs to take it so strong to the hole in the 4th.

Lots of fouls and no calls...terrible reffing...David Lee got bloodied..and no call.

That poor kid Roberson looks like a deer in the headlights...too much too soon.

What the heck is up w Mobley?

Isn't this something he's been playin with FOREVER?

Have him sign a waiver and put him on the court.

Tomorrow!

Just to give poor Duhon a blow.

This team is SOOOO MUCH more fun to watch than last year...even when they lose.

So nice not seeing you-know-who on the bench...

Looking forward to seeing what Jeffries can do with a real coaching staff.

NICE JOB KNICKS.

We played hard and we are undrmanned. But things are looking good.

Duhon was Player of the Week. Nice Job Chris!!!

D Antoni appears to be a good coach and the guys seem to have some pride.
QRICH is inconsistent but at least he and David and Nate get FIRE UP!!!

The Knicks are so much better off with Duhon anyway. 22 assists the other night and then another solid double-double tonight. All the joker Marbury fans will cry about how he did it against teams that don't play defense but just watch the actual footage of Duhon driving to the basket and then passing to an open teammate for an easy layup instead of taking contested shots which is what Marbury would do and always did - because he is a selfish me-first ballhog.

Ben, I actually appreciate the sincerity of your comment. However, don’t worry, I am achieving every objective I am aiming for with my commentary. I have been writing LAPs on blogs for over two years now and I am not writing for everybody or any one person all the time. To tell you the pleasures I experience writing and posting LAPs would make this a really long LAP, but suffice it to say that it has resulted in unexpected gains such as several very bball savvy new friends who I have met, and still hang out with off-line, since we’ve started writing about the Knicks.

I have absolutely no problem with anyone (or most people) passing my comments. I pass or skim LAPs all the time. And of course, I have no concern about the vacuous comments of those who choose to waste space in their lives commenting on something of mine they haven’t read. That behavior speaks for itself and I love the free marketing their shout-outs generate almost as much as their silence. I also thoroughly enjoy reading the provocative and well thought out responses of my fellow posters and the head blogger. With that said, often I too prefer to read the shorter elaborations, restatements or variations on my comments by other posters.

The folks who are reading and responding to my posts are the ones I want to do it. So, I’m really good. Thanks.

Pete, I hear you, but I am absolutely not buying the notion that the Marbury incident is secondary and that we should be happy minions focused on the good things about the Knicks. I think the handling of the Marbury situation goes to the core of a problem that will continue to rear it’s ugly head as this cap space and team is managed. I absolutely respect your desire to take a positive approach amidst the problems we face. But, you will read me disagree with you often. Good luck with proving me wrong. BTW, great stuff man.

Pverne, I like your honesty. If you think I am pompous, you may be quite accurate. I can’t say I apologize for it. I take my victims as they come to me. (Just kidding, sorta). However, I have a few unwritten rules about how I spend my posting time and one of them is that for the most part I will only respond to direct commentary from something worthy of a response and someone deserving of the respect of a response even when they are being snarky or pompous. So no matter how you feel about my responses, you can be assured that I am so grateful for my time on this earth that if I spend more than three minutes communicating with you in a civil manner, I am showing you great respect.

One last piece of advice or rule that may help you through your days. If you are the smartest person in the room for longer than it takes to introduce yourself then you are probably the dumbest person in the room or being paid to give a speech. Go where the knowledge is and follow the facts. I do.

Pete, I like what I see in Duhon. Though, I still think he is overpaid and inconsistent, he is trying and learning. You can’t knock that. In fact, the team is starting over so it is hard to evaluate his play in these next few games because this is training camp all over again. But Duhon’s play in the last game was more telling than the Golden State practice game. I hope they resolve the guard situation real soon because overplaying the guy will do the team no good.

@ Mike D
I'm not Awol, It's just that
I don't want to make a azz out of you. Why should I take all
the credit for the one thing you've done yourself?

D'Antoni can't handle whats in store for this ugly
Knick season. Once the Boo Birds start...and
they will....he will be one and out. Fools Gold Knicks.

As far as Lebron???? We maintain the status
of being the League Joke. Lebron again STATES:
"I'm happy with the fans here," James said after
practice on Monday. "I'm happy with the organization.
There's nothing more for me to say."

Hey Alan - 2 things. 1) THANK YOU for writing no more Steph stories.

It's to the point where if I see a sportswriter doing a story about Steph, I just skip the article.

It's just journalistic laziness, pure and simple.

REAL KNICKS FANS DON'T CARE ANY MORE.

So again, thank you.

2) A request: Next time you talk to D'Antoni ask him this:

Is it possible that a player can be great in practice and lousy in games (i.e., Roberson)?

If yes, then is it possible that a player can be mediocre in practice and better in games (PEJr)?

And, if yes, why are we risking injury to D Lee by playing him so many minutes? Is Jerome James so bad that he can't give 10 minutes a night?

I think all the hoopla around S is obscuring a weird personnel decision, that Mike D needs to explain.

'Cuz Malik Rose gets more burn and he has a negative PER!!! He is statistically, the worst player in the league. #316 out of 316 of players who play 6 minutes or more.

http://insider.espn.go.com/nba/hollinger/statistics?qual=true&sort=per&league=nba&page=7&seasonType=2&qualCnt=65&qualIndex=350

Why isn't JJ playing even a little bit??? He’s big, he’s motivated, he can rebound. Seems like it could use a little explaining, yes?

"I am achieving every objective I am aiming for with my commentary. I have been writing LAPs on blogs for over two years now and I am not writing for everybody or any one person all the time. Anonymous, that was the second time this month you tricked me into reading one of your posts. That one was really funny. Thanks for the early morning laugh, Assnon.

Last night was tough - a gutty but undermanned team wearing down against waves of talented players. Although it sucks to basically have six serviceable bodies (Rose and Roberson don't really count), I like these guys a lot for their heart, and I feel badly for them when they lose because they put out such an effort. If this spirit can be maintained as more pieces are added over time, then the future is promising. If Nate had been healthy to spell Duhon and bring his usual spark, they'd have had the Blazers last night.

Duhon and Lee have matched or exceeded any reasonable expectations and are playing very well together. They have their limitations, but they are getting the most out their abilities. If there is something they are not doing, its because its beyond them, not because they are lazy or selfish. Although Lee still has room to improve defensively, he is routinely matched up with much bigger and stronger players, who will realistically always have an advantage. I wonder about spot minutes for James as well - is there something going on that we don't know about? He can't be worse then Rose.

I am quickly souring on Harrington. Uptempo doesn't mean jack it up every time you touch it. His three-point touch last night offset an otherwise miserable shooting night, and he doesn't seem to grasp the notion of ball movement (other than from his hands to off the rim). I'll chalk much of it up to rust (he missed a bunch of games) and unfamiliarity with the coach and teammates, but at some point he needs to show some willingness to get with the program.

Portland has a lot of good young players, but I'm underwhelmed with Oden. I'm not saying he's no good - he is a huge presence inside with lots of upside, but for a guy hyped as the next Shaq/Robinson type dominant center, he doesn't move well and has a terrible touch. He seem ponderous and doesn't jump as well as the hype would have suggested. At this point he seems way less athletic and agile than Howard did at his age. I've seen Portland a couple of times on league pass and noticed the same thing, but last night against the small Knicks drove it home.

All am I missing something. JJ will soon return from a broken leg, while Curry is still out with a sore knee? I guess it takes longer to heal a sore knee :)

The knicks need to be honest about Curry. They can really use his size in the middle.

He doesn't even have a time table for a return.

Dearest Lives...

I'm glad I made you laugh...my only intention. It is a sign that you are not taking yourself so seriously, and this is the first step on the road to recovery from terminal pretentiosness.

Now then...I can sense from your eloquent missives,(aka 'LAPs'), that you are perhaps way too high brow and well educated to be wasting your time deeply analyzing a child's game, and the meaningless. off-court drama, of a once great, and now disgraced Coney Island point guard...on someone else's blog no less

A blog...where the average poster's IQ no doubt hovers around the number of points the Knicks scored last night (*cough Peaceman*).

Might I reccomend you find yourself a good philosophy, theology or Quantum Physics blog or forum to apply your considerable analytical and bardly skills?

Sincerely,

Your Therapist.

Nice fight by the Knicks last night against a team that is much more talented than them and got to play together (minus Oden and some of the rookies) last year. Obviously Jerome James
is much worse than any of us imagine if D'Antoni wouldn't even play him when we only had seven guys.

Roberson isn't a rookie. He shouldn't be lost out there.

Great point about Curry although even without the knee injury he and Jerome James were never in shape enough to play in this system. What is up with our training staff.

Alot of mysterious medical conditions with the Knicks this year. Danillo's back, Mobley's heart, Curry's knee, Jerome James fat. I thiought this was supposed to be the year of openess from management.
Seems like these mysterious injuries have no end in sight or timetables for the players return.

Jerome "Big Snacks" James called into work "fat" last night!!

Wouldn't it be great of the rest of us could get away with this?

@Knicksmyteam

"All am I missing something. JJ will soon return from a broken leg, while Curry is still out with a sore knee? I guess it takes longer to heal a sore knee"

Yes...just ask Allan Houston...

Seriously...Eddy Curry's biggest ailment is his mind.

He simply doesn't WANT to play basketball...it is OBVIOUS.

At least I sorta believe Jerome James, that he would at least LIKE to play once more before he dies. That he actually WANTS to get on the court and maybe block a shot or grab a rebound or at least knock some point guard on his ass as he heads to the rim.

Eddy is EXTREMELY fragile. He is the poster child for someone drafted out of High School who was NO where near ready for the NBA.

He needed to go to a serious college program for 4 years and LEARN the discipline and skills required to play this sport at such a high level. Instead he went right from HS to Chicago and now NY, two of the toughest basketball markets in the world.

Not everyone is KG or Dwight Howard or Kobe...Eddy is the OTHER end of that spectrum...a HUGE lovable, fragile teddy bear forced into a sport he wasn't ready for, at the age of 18, by the offer of countless millions of dollars.

The damage to Eddy is now permanent...the knee is just an excuse...he will never be a serious player in this league...Chicago and Skiles knew this, and now D'Antoni and Walsh do...even if they won't come out and say it.

His career is for all practical purposes over. Perhaps the Knicks can somehow put enough lipstick on him to dump him for any guard who can at least hit the rim on a wide open 3.

After watching Plaxico's folly turn into a murder investigation, LeBron would be crazy to sign in New York.

ALSO, would someone tell me what the HELL happened to
boxing out?

The "skills" that today's players supposedly have are
SERIOUSLY lacking.

Need to check some college ball, at least those boys play both
ends of the court.

al,
what about eddy curry to the pacers for troy murphy?

what about eddy curry & david lee to memphis for
kyle lowery & antoine walker?

The core of this team is now Duhon, Chandler, Lee & Nate going forward. I wouldn't trade any of those guys just to get rid of lazy Eddy and his contract.

I don't usually read Starberman's drivel anymore, but his article today sets a new standard in Marbury ass kissing.

IListen to this:

On the one-year anniversary of his father's death from a heart attack at the Garden, Stephon Marbury - as his sneakers once read - was "All Alone." All alone from his Knicks teammates after being banished indefinitely from the team's Westchester practice facility and told not to come to last night's game vs. the Blazers or any of the others.

That is freakin' hilarious...his sneakers once 'read' All Alone?!?
Dang! I wondered how those words got there! And what they were in reference to?!?
And yesterday, the poor, poor, lonely, and misunderstood, greatest point guard in the NBA had to "work out"..."All Alone" ...in front of a Post Photographer, you, his chaffuer, bodyguard, and the rest of his Coney Island Possee hanging on his every ignorant, self centered, "it's all about me"...word.

Too funny...

Hey Berman...do you even know Duhon's first name...or where he's from?

Get a life...then get a new job.

@PEACEMAN

DID U OR DID U NOT CALL OUT OUR HOST A RACEIST?
WHY DID U CUSSED HIM OUT DAWG?

Comparing a self-centered player to a convict certainly isn't objective reporting. Racist, no. Irresponsible? Yes.

Lives is trying too hard to sound intelligent

I think LIves feels slighted that Bokonon won the Nobel Peace Prize award a few months ago. give it up dude, ur makeing us hit the snooze button

The Knicks desperately need to get healthy, if for no other reason than I never want to watch Anthony Roberson play for my beloved team again.

I have yet to discern what basketball skill or favorable physical attribute this man possesses.

Handle? Nope. Vision? Nah-ah. Shooting? Not only does he miss every shot, but he misses them by at least a nautical mile.

He's short, he's slow, and he can't jump.

Please, for the love of God, get healthy Lil' Nate. I never thought I'd say this, but I need you right now. You can fly wildly out of control into the lane, committing a charge or throwing up an easily blocked floater all you want. At least your circus act will amuse me.

Just please, please come back. I can't take watching Anthony Roberson anymore.

There's a lot of Knowledge here at the fix. Maybe half the blog.
However, to the other half, If idiots like Mike's D'Antoni's could fly,

LOL

So I gather from reading that their are two types of bloggers on this site. Those on the blog host's back who call him out for his miscues, (percieved or imagined), and those on the Blog hosts sack.

Cumbaya my lord cumbaya!

2. Marbury’s presence unnecessarily impacted roster positions. Patrick Ewing, Jr., who was more likely to play for the Knicks than Marbs, should have been in a Knicks uniform instead of sneaking around the practice facility like he’s creeping on his girlfriend. Also, the amount of money paid to Duhon was excessive only because Marbury needed to be marginalized. Since this was going to be a rebuilding year, it was not necessary to dump the whole mid-level on one guard of Duhon’s skill level. Duhon has tried hard and performed relatively well, though inconsistently under the circumstances, but half of that mid-level could have been used for inside defensive help. Plus, the amount he paid Duhon raised the price of other players of similar talent/stat level angering (deleted p*ss*ng off to get past security) a couple of execs dabbling in the free agent market.

3. Marbury’s presence impacted our decision to obtain Cuttino Mobley. The dumping of Zach’s contract was inevitable and frees up the cash to be spent on Lee and/or Robinson and other free agents, but it was done at the cost of this season. Zach could have been dumped later, but was set loose because we needed yet another guard to make sure that Marbury would not play based on Walsh’s strategy. That methodical strategy fell apart with Mobley’s heart tests. Nevertheless, Marbury puts us in the ridiculous position of gambling on a player who may not play again ( yet another player with a heart problem) and Tim “why again” Thomas. Fugazy.
