'The Mike Tyson of the NBA'
So what will be out there waiting for Stephon Marbury once he is finally free from the Knicks? We took the time to ask around and got some interesting responses to an inquiry about teams that might be interested in bringing Marbury into their team at mid-season.
Several team executives believe at least one team will make a play for him, but for nothing more than the pro rated amount of the $1.2 million veteran's minimum. Then if anything goes wrong, you can easily eat the relatively cheap contract and send him packing.
But there are great concerns about the player that, in GM circles, is referred to as "the Mike Tyson of the NBA."
For instance, this came from a well-connected scout with many years in the league:
"I can't see anyone taking that risk. I think some teams were interested but now they would rather not. History tends to follow people and his is not good. It's always someone else's fault with him. I'm not there or in their locker room, but it just doesn't look good. It's too bad because I still think he can play. No one wants to deal with that in their locker room. He's not only lost respect from the organization, but also his teammates. When you lose your family what else is left?"
Europe won't be an option until the spring, because most of the big-time teams have their rosters filled and there are so few spots for American-born players. But one agent with European connections said Marbury could make a killing overseas if he wanted to go there. How quickly would Josh Childress become old news in Greece when Starbury arrives? I think it might be good for him. He'll certainly earn more over there than he will here at this point.
* * *
By the way, did anyone catch the story I did on Jerome James talking about his own situation among the unwanted? I told 'Rome I wish he played just because he's actually a great quote.
Best line of all was this one:
"I can't leave New York without at least making my stamp and letting New York know I wasn't here taking money," James said. "That's not me. I've always had a passion for basketball and unfortunately, due to injuries, I wasn't able to show 'em that side of me. I want to show them that side and then I'll get my @$$ out of here. I'll leave."
* * *
I still believe this thing isn't going to happen quickly. In fact, I think the Knicks prefer to just ban him from the team for as long as it takes rather than hand him a lump of millions just to go play somewhere else. As I wrote in the "Method Man" blog, this is all part of the strategy. Stephon turns down the buyout offer and the Knicks ban him indefinitely until a settlement is reached.
Really all Mike D'Antoni wanted was to get him away from the team. Eliminate him even as an option. So Walsh provided that and now the team can move forward without the daily reminder. As one person within the team said to me after noting Marbury's absence on Saturday, "The atmosphere is so much better without him around."
* * *
Oh by the way, anyone remember the rest of the team is 8-8? They have a pretty good test Tuesday against the Portland Trail Blazers at the Garden. Keep an eye on Travis Outlaw...think he might fit in the D'Antoni system if the Blazers ever would consider moving him. Sergio Rodriguez is looking for a change of scenery as well....Hmmm.
Wednesday night is another date with King James. Can't wait to hear how Clevelanders will welcome the Knicks, who plan to bird dog their star in 18 months.

The Mike Tyson of the NBA? Yeah, I can see him biting off Q's ear and Big Snacks might eat it. I'm thinking pay per view!
Hey Alan -
Tell you buddy "Rome" that he need not worry about how the NY fans think. He has never been in shape in his years here or even tried to get his conditioning under control..
He has completely embarrassed himself in his stay here and should start negotiating a buyout today. If he had any pride he would take his medical retirement, save the knicks the cap space and go buy a car wash somewhere on the west coast.
THere is absolutely no hope for this tub of goo getting into any games as long as D'Antoni is coach and no hope of saving any face with Knicks Fans.
Oh.. and tell your buddy this New Years try not to get so plastered you cant make it to practice. Not that it will matter anyway.
and your security code system is an abomination.
@ Dajoka,
Been bloogin with you for years, I know you can't
stand Marbury. However, you are right about
other teams waiting to Jack him. Check out
CBS Sports : Besides the legal and financial details of Marbury's eventual release, all that is left to be decided is what team would be willing to take a chance on Marbury's talent -- he still has something left and is in great shape for someone who hasn't played a game this season -- while also being able to absorb his weirdness. Miami, Dallas, and Golden State (remember Stephen Jackson guaranteeing the Warriors would sign Marbury if the Knicks released him?) are three teams that have expressed some level of interest. Another one seldom mentioned is the Celtics, who could be willing to take a chance, a person with ties to Marbury said Thursday. The roster spot could come from a Marbury suppporter, 39-year-old Sam Cassell, a key reserve during the Celtics' championship run last season who does not have a guaranteed contract. Cassell hasn't played yet this season and is being kept around in a mentoring role.
Don't let Anonymous bother you, he'll never change his mind.
If he ever does, that diaper will be worth a fortune.
Whats up Alan,
In regards to what you said about Outlaw and and Rodriguez, I've had my eye on both of them as targets since the offseason and like alot of fixers spent hours gazing at hoopshype putting together possible trades. We all know Portland is going to have to sort out who among there bevy of young players they will keep, and we know they will certainly need to unload a couple of them. I feel like after these recent trades, we can have alot of serviceable veterans with short contracts who can be of use to playoff contending teams. If the Al Harringtons, and Tim Thomas's of the world play well over the next couple of months do you think 1 of them packaged with David Lee can get something done for a couple of portlands youngsters such as outlaw and rodriguez? Do you think the Knicks have real intentions of resigning Lee, Robinson or both? If I can get Lee to take something in the 5 for 35 mil range I'd do it...
I'm interested to see how Walsh approaches these next 2 years...if he has an oppurtunity to trade for a player whose contract extends beyond next year, but could be a valuable peace to a championship puzzle, will he do it? Will he look to acquire young players to develop for the future? Or will he sit tight for the most part, let all those contracts expire, and resign a couple of those vets who earn the right to stay....
On another note, can you shed some light on this Mobley situation...how is it that a guy whose played 77, 78 games for the most part every year, is all of the sudden unfit to play? Is it really possible that he will be shut down for the year?
The really disappointing thing (other than tying up cap room and a roster spot) about James is that if he had ever gotten fit, this team could desperately use his ability to patrol the paint, even off the bench for a different look, or against huge opponents like Portland and Cleveland. I agree with BiggieSmalls' assessment above, but it still bugs me that the skill set he was supposedly signed for is something the Knicks could really use right now.
Speaking of goo, any word on Curry?
Peaceman - Marbury's people might float the Celtics as a possibility, but I just can't see it. He'll turn up somewhere, but most likely on a team with an idiot GM. And I don't think Ainge counts anymore. And to sum up anonymous - this is a guy who's so mindless and irritating that he's actually been banned from open media blogs, and so devoid of dignity that he still slinks around on them.
And yes, the security code is maddening. I don't mind punching in some numbers if it then posts the comment. However...
The Mike Tyson of the NBA.....You can't be serious right now.
First of all, I don't think you can count on 2 hands the # of times Iron Mike has been arrested.
Secondly, Iron Mike has a way, way, way more lengthy history than Marbury.
Marbury's problems have to do with him not getting along with people. I don't think he ever bit anybody and I don't remember him having those rediculous racist rants at the media where he said things like "I'll rap# your kids" or "Your scared of me you white &*$@". Wow....talk about having a stigma placed on you.
All this man wants is his money. That's all he wants!!!
What's wrong with the guy asking for all his money?
On top of that, he said he was willing to take 1 million less!!!
Do you really think Steph has a problem sittiing out this year and going to another team next year? He's in incredible shape and he'll continue to stay in shape because HE IS A BUSINESS MAN and he knows in order for him to get a new deal, he'll need to play well. What's wrong with going to Europe? If Childress is banking just under 7 mill per...how much do you think Steph will make. He'll easily get 10 mill per year.
Steph is not the one losing here.
22 million this year and 10 mill for the next 3 years?
Doesn't sound like the guy is losing to me.
See, you have to understand and remember what I said late last week. Walsh has to know who he's dealing with. Marbury doesn't care about winning a championship and he damn sure don't care about his team mates. All he cares about is his money. If Donnie thinks Steph won't be a distraction anymore, they better think again. Last time I checked, Steph had a certain well read NY Knicks beat writer on speed dial and isn't afraid to use it and open a few closet doors. As long as he's in the papers, he will be a distraction. Obviously there is nothing in his contract that says he can't talk to the papers, so I think he'll beat that drum to death.
The guy is not 38....HE'S 32!!!
Same age group as Iverson, Kobe and the rest of his draft.
People kill me lol
Speaking of Stephon Marbury, did anyone catch Stephen A. Smith's article on ESPN regarding the Starbury of the New York Giants, Plaxico Burress?
Smith took his purse and literally bytchslapped Brothah Burress to the last Cheeto.
http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/columns/story?columnist=smith_stephen&id=3737952
"Another black athlete.
"Another sad statistic.
"There is no doubt some people will find that assertion offensive, especially those associated with Plaxico Burress. They will swear that is simply a bombastic way of feeding into the hype, condemning the Giants' star receiver before all the facts are revealed and lumping him into the same category as Michael Vick, Adam "Pacman" Jones or a host of other African-American athletes cuffed in broad daylight, booked into jail and faced with an impending court date instead of practice time with their team.
"That is, right up until the moment those same folks are asked: Didn't he just get charged with two counts of criminal possession of a handgun? Where am I wrong?
"To which they have no response. (Kinda like Starbury.)
"The embarrassing and precarious set of circumstances Burress finds himself in clearly are not an indication of the behavior exhibited by most players of any color in the NFL, particularly African-Americans. The vast majority of NFL players have some sense.
"And it's a fact that those who have displayed their idiotic ways have paid dearly for it -- in dollars and jail time. Yet Burress still managed to screw up by placing himself, literally, in the line of fire despite the body of evidence flashing in players' faces as a deterrent....."
"....Most people who know (Burress) describe him as kind, sensitive and giving. They say he's a man who should be recognized more for his commitment to family than for his practice habits similar to Allen Iverson's.
"Perhaps we'll see more evidence of that in the future. Right now, all anyone sees is another black athlete arrested over avoidable nonsense.
"I know a few people sick and tired of this.
"One of them wrote this damn column."
DaJoka, Peaceman, Lives In New Jersey Toils at Lou's Auto Body and Law School with offices in Trenton, Newark, Camden, and Passaic, you've got to mount up (at least when DaJoka's done coverin' Starbury's backside) and attack Stephen A. for dissin' Plax, Stephon, and the rest of the gang.
After all, D'Antoni, Donnie, and Jimbo dissed your boss, Marbury. You can't let Stephen A. get away with the same against another bro'.
Duty calls, kids. Duty calls.
Yeah, 10 mil a year... in Eurpoe.
Wasn't the NYK supposed to have been his dream job?
But now that he's completely trashed his dream gig, the Knicks don't matter any more, right? On to Europe.
Nice.
His roster spot is still taken right? The Knicks can't sign another guard to replace him or take Ewing Jr. back on right?
word of mouth is the best promotion
i am a marbury supporter
but ive been callin him the tyson of basketball
since he got that tat of his head...
i should of copyrighted that.lol...
well gotta wait another day for the outcome of starbury's future with the knicks...
do the rite thing an buy him out
this isn't a smart organization
could of played him an traded him
but u wonna piss him off thinkin he would take a cheap buyout
now that's a real smart move.lmao..
after they buyout star
buyout all the bigsnacks..
but it would of been best to just let him playout his contract in his hometown then have the contracts come of the books
an that would of help the cap
but noo
we have smarter people than that.lmao....
stay tuned for more KnowLedge
As one person within the team said to me after noting Marbury's absence on Saturday, "The atmosphere is so much better without him around."
THAT SAYS IT ALL. But the delusional Marbury fans will still drink Steph's Kool-Aid and cry and complain about how it's someone else's fault and not Marbury's. The victim culture among the blacks still amazes me.
@Don-aDO
"Wasn't the NYK supposed to have been his dream job?"
Umm, no that was Larry Brown.
You remember right, the man that tried to back stab Isiah Thomas for the keys to the organization?
Surely you couldn't have forgot him that quick.
Shame on you Alan or should I just call you James Dolan Jr.? I am far from a MeBury fan -- but come on! Compare him to Latrell Spreewell -- perhaps. But Tyson?
Now the Knicks own you and your spewing the company line without remorse.
You forgot to mention that Newsday and YOU are NOW owned by CableBlindness who speaks while you move your lips -- or in your case dictates your copy while you pretend to write it.
Alan you are too talented to be a CablBlindness stooge. It's time to move on before your reputation and career are ruined. You won't be the first to leave rather than regurgitate Dolan's rhetoric. Even Marv Albert knew better.
I would never defend Marbury as a player, I've wanted to get rid of him for a while.
But this article is completely irresponsible. Tyson, besides his bad behavior in the boxing ring, is a CONVICTED RAPIST who has spent years in jail. Marbury has never had any trouble with the law, and is from all apearances a pretty good citizen. For example he sent a lot of charity (over 1 million) to help with Katrina... did you?
WINNERS AND LOSERS, Part I
Gentle Fixers, understand this and you will comprehend this entire sordid episode. As this blog post by our gracious host points out, no matter how much he is despised, reviled or demonized for not being a team player or for being a social misfit (as opposed to a criminal), someone out there wants and will pay for Stephon Marbury. All Marbury needs is for one NBA team to want him and that is why he is still here as a Knick -- James Dolan (another who many call a malcontent/social misfit) knows as soon as he pays Marbury “all his money minus maybe $1.4 - 3 million” another team, possibly an Eastern Conference for, will benefit from his largesse.
Like the other execs, Dolan knows that it is well worth it for one team to spend $1.2 million to have Stephon add quite a bit of skill, and insurance, at point or shooting guard. Anyone that knows anything about sports, knows that there is always an executive out there ready to benefit from someone else’s breakup. There is always one executive who believes they can get turn a troubled player around in a new environment and maximize his skills.
Executives and coaches have taken chances on other “disruptive” stars such as Dennis Rodman, Terrell Owens, Jeremy Shockey, Michael Vick, Pacman Jones, Jason “White Chocolate” Williams and Shaquille “I’ll wait until the all star game to get in shape” O’Neal. Obviously, the Knicks think they can turn the Warriors’ problem, Al Harrington, into a team player. Very often the change of scenery works long enough for the player’s new team to get better in the short term.
What distinguishes Marbury from most malcontents today is that he is in New York where everything is media-magnified and the fans’ emotions run so much higher than the collective’s common sense and reasonableness when an athlete is disliked by the New York press. The media and the fans like to demonize and deep fry their former heroes; it seems to make the irate fans feel a little better at least until the star is successful again somewhere else. GM's referring to Marbury as “Mike Tyson” is funny but quite a stretch more typical of the New York media especially when it comes to men of color.
The emotionally charged fan’s definition of winner is irrelevant to Marbury. Dolan-Walsh-D’Antoni made the same mistake that fans have made except it has cost them more, especially Walsh and Dolan: they thought Marbury could be manipulated through embarrassment, ridicule and by threatening to take away his opportunity to play on the court. But for Marbury entertaining fans by playing a game is not what motivates him. Putting his family in a secure financial position is what does.
Marbury would not have been a winner had he played for D'Antoni. He showcased himself enough during triaining camp and by his compliant behavior for the first three weeks of the season until the Knicks tried to put the screws on him. Be assured at least one exec was smart enough to know Marbury was a goner last year and he didn't need to pick up a $21 million dollar expiring contract to get him. That same exec knows that Marbury and his team split up last year and the Knicks just couldn't reconcile how to get rid of him and not pay him, something the Knicks still haven't figured out.
If Marbury gets his money and his family is secure he wins. Playing basketball on the international stage is a bonus which ends in a three to five years anyway.
The Tyson comparison is just absurd. So is the Burress one for several reasons. He is presently accused of a felony - unless someone can show that Marbury has been in the same situation, its a false analogy, and generally when people knowingly make false analogies they are pushing an agenda that they can't support honestly. Beyond the courtroom, the Burress comparison doesn't hold much water either - Burress has been disciplined multiple times, while the Marbury's fine and one game suspension is his lone incident this season, and under appeal anyhow. Oh, and Burress was a key contributer on a championship team - that doesn't sound like Marbury at all.
Marbury doesn't care about wins and losses, rings, or his teams. He wants to get paid. This may annoy teammates or fans (such as myself) who are happy to see the guy go, and the GM's who keep trading him, but it is not criminal. He is a cancer because he undermines team goals, an inefficient scorer who insists on dominating the ball, doesn't play d and is unwilling to change when its clear this is not an effective approach, but he's never been convicted of anything and rarely commits infractions he can be disciplined for. His personality and losing play antagonize a lot of fans, but that is no excuse to lump him in with felons.
I hope Donnie get's in the memphis-portland deal and helps facilitate getting both outlaw and sergio to NY.
Pete and DaJoka are dead on.
But there are great concerns about the player that, in GM circles, is referred to as "the Mike Tyson of the NBA."
All you Marbury fans are acting like the media made up the Mike Tyson analogy, get off of Hahn's back about it - it's clearly stated that it is a perception held by several GMs. Face facts, your boy Marbury is a spoiled brat and karma has caught up.
@tjrover - "Marbury fan"? my "boy Marbury"? The guy I've been calling a cancer and a loser over and over? The guy I've repeatedly said should be bought out at any cost just to get him off the team? The most overrated, overpaid waste in the NBA who is scraping for someone even willing to offer a minimum deal now?
This may be hard for you to understand, but bear with me. This issue is a tad more complicated then Marbury all good/Marbury all bad. Marbury IS a bad teammate and a losing baller. Marbury ISN'T a convicted felon. Therefore, comparing him to Tyson is weak - Tyson IS a convicted felon who has also been in and out of court on debt/mismanagement and family issues as well. Marbury ISN'T. I suppose both are unlikable public figures, but I doubt that is the reason for the media disseminating the comparison - surely there are more accurate analogies. And how does this being the perception held by several GM's make an invalid comparison more valid? GM's are never wrong?
I don't like these over the top attacks because they don't hold up, and they shift the debate away from the real problems. Focus on how Marbury actually hurts the Knicks (there's plenty there) and force his simple-minded defenders to respond to substantive criticisms, rather then tossing out weak comparisons whose easy rebuttal makes defending him seem easy. Oh, but that's requires thought and leads to headaches - so much easier to say Marbury is Tyson... no he isn't, hater... yes he is, Marbury fan...
My favorite part of Starberman's blog to day is the part where he gives it to the bloggers for taking him to task on supporting Marbury.
As if he has NEVER done that...someone get to the cuttin' & pastin' job to show him he's actin' a fool.
Please recognize that the Tyson comparison is a quote. I can see that using it as a title for the article might tip the balance, but it is not "irresponsible."
The financial issues are tricky, but the suggestion that he needs to "put his family in a secure financial position" is a bit of an overstatement. The veterans minimum would more than accomplish that! I'm not suggesting that he should settle for a low figure, but that his financial security is only an issue if he can't handle money!
There seems to be a "logjam" between fans who are eager to place blame on one of two camps; Marbury or the Knicks' administration. I have clearly leaned toward blaming Stephon, but acknowledge that there has been awkward behavior from management. I would further state that we, as a culture, have been far too willing to "spoil" talented athletes with everything from academic passes to excessive salaries. I'm not comfortable with lumping Marbury and Plaxico together on the character level, but noticed that numerous people stated that we should tolerate Plax's abhorrent behavior because he's such a valuable player. Sometimes we create our own monsters!
Brandon - Thank you, I've been asking this question over and over. THIS is what we should be puzzling over. Fascinating as the death throes of Zeke's Knicks are, they are irrelevant. Perhaps someone can begin a blog about the recent history of the knicks, because none of this post mortem makes any difference. Marbury's over, With Randolph and Crawford gone, ANYTHING goes now, any player can go, anything can happen. D'Antoni is managing a temp agency for the next two years.
The question is how does Walsh build this team? Outlaw? Julian Wright? Who are the young, up and coming players, like Wilson Chandler, Nate Robinson, etc... that we can lock up BEFORE they become overpaid. Do we give David Lee 10 mil plus to keep him? Does Walsh just go on a spending spree for James Posey like players to complement a Dwayne LeBoshemire, or do we build and develop a guy like David West? Let's start Fixing on these questions - this is what's happening, the REBUILD, the CHANGE, EVERYTHING all the Fixers have been waiting for since Walsh was signed is happening NOW, and people want to talk about Marbury? That's like going to the club and spending your night telling some pretty young thing all about your ex wife. As Clyde would say, REJECTED.
Time to get back on the horse lads, Walsh and D'Antoni made these decisions long ago, its over, time to color your grey beards black, climb out of the bunker, and start living again. Time to "Set the Woods on Fire" (Hank Williams, Mr. Hahn).
@pete... so much to say....
1) alan hahn didn't call marbury tyson... league GM's did and alan reported it. it's all over the news dude, so he's not the only one.
2) why buyout marbury? there is no advantage to the knicks except getting the media and the fans to shut the heck up. now he stays home, collects his paycheck and is out of the public eye. look at jamaal tinsley. no one is saying he's a distraction in Indy.
i think d'antoni and walsh are heroes for the way they've handled this. you couldn't banish marbury before because he really didn't do anything that league rules allow you to punish him for. he was playing along and being a good soldier. you can't banish a guy for being an ass. so instead, they gave him some rope by not playing him.... then a bit more rope by leaving him inactive.... then some more rope by activating an injured curry instead of him... then some more rope by asking him if he wanted to play after the trades/injuries... and then he hung himself. absolutely a thing of beauty played to perfection. give marbury the rope and he'll hang himself.
so now he's banished from the team, which is what management wanted all along. now you have a reason to banish him. he refused to play and then shot his mouth off about the team, the coach and everyone else. that is a punishable offense according to the collective bargaining agreement, and so he's banished.
from here on in he's away from the team and the media. he's only relevant if we (fans/media) make him so. now the team can move on. why pay him to play elsewhere. if you have to pay him, why not keep him at home and out of sight. now that he's at home he shouldn't be a distraction to anyone, and we should all just move on. and if your argument is that we need a roster spot, then i'd say let's look to big snacks first. waive him and pick ewing or whoever you like. just don't set marbury free because he doesn't deserve it. he deserves to ruin his name as much as possible, because that's all he's good for.
alan said it best in his post calling walsh the "method man". fantastic name for him. i think walsh is a genius and has played this perfectly. i just wish the media and fans would give him more credit for it.
Why do you and others mention the Knicks @ Rangers are owned by Cablevision, which owns newsday in every article written. It's gotten to the point where I can't even read them anymore. Are you beingtold to put that in at least once in every article? You have to be, right?
@ jaxx - yes, Alan is required to mention it. he let us know this a while back.
Here's some funny Sports Guy talk on the Lebron stuff:
But here's the part that I love (just a pet theory of mine): Team LeBron is making everyone think they have a chance at LeBron in 2010 so multiple teams clear cap space and weaken themselves competitively in the short-term (like Detroit did) ... which inadvertently gives Bron a better chance to win a title over these next two years! It's devious and hilarious. I love it. I would do the same thing. Can't you see Worldwide Wes whispering to Dumars, "Yeah, LeBron loves Detroit, he could totally see himself there, you should kill your 2009 chances so we can maybe sign with you."
@michael - I'll just point out that at no point did I accuse Alan of coming up with the Tyson comparison - I called it absurd in one post and attacked the validity of the comparison in general (including the media's dissemination of it) in another. Of course if you had read my posts, you would be aware of that, but don't let that stop you from calling me out on something I didn't write. There was no point in criticizing Alan directly because the quotes on the headline and in his text make it obvious he's citing someone else.
I was calling for the buyout to get rid of Marbury. I don't think he's going to help any team much (see the rest of his career), so I don't care where he lands. Nor do I see any point in sticking it to him, whether he deserves it or not, although I can totally understand why someone would want to see him get his. This isn't about cosmic justice, but cancer treatment. I'll give Walsh all the credit in the world for this outcome though - orchestrating the banishment is a better solution then the buy out, and in hindsight, he handled it beautifully. I agree with you that James ought to go for the roster spot.
@Willis - I'm all for moving forward, and I like the direction the team is taking. I just don't see the new additions as anything more then space fillers and expiring contracts, and until I see how they gel with a few practices under their belts, don't see a whole lot of point in detailed analysis. For example, Harrington has looked horrible until the GS game, but I think its more a result of rust and trying to fit in than being a chronic ball hog and chucker. So rather than crap on him, I'm withholding judgment until he's more settled in. I'm happy with Duhon. He is more of a gamer than I thought he'd be, and may be around longer than two seasons. I hope his back is all right.
I actually think the Tyson line fits in several ways (though it is harsh)... Tyson was always a guy you pulled for and then it seemed like he got the wrong people in his corner and started messing up. And you kept rooting for him and it seemed like ever time he opened his mouth it got worse. You just wanted to yell at Tyson to just keep his mouth shut. And finally you keep hoping for one last comeback and it never came. In the end you wonder what might have been if he only got some better advice and got his head on straight. A lot of talent went to waste. I think all of that fits Marbury. Obviously he's not a criminal and all the bad stuff. But just the fact that he's his own worst enemy and never has really fulfilled that huge, huge talent that is there. And I've keep rooting for him to somehow turn it around...
"Mike Tyson of the NBA." Just put it out there. 'I didn't say it, it came from the GMs.'
Comparing a "moody" player with no known record to an ex-con. But I guess the similarity is they're both "urban."
Totally irresponsible.

@ PETE...good post, but like WILLIS wrote (you gotta love love the ex-wife analogy!) it's time to move on, the world be changing, no point joining the mob in beating that dead horse.
suddenly the knicks have some financial flexibility (especially if mobley has to retire), which gives them personnel options, not only in 2010, but in 2009. the LEE and N8 restricted free agencies aside, the knicks will likely invest in at least one medium to long term contract next year in their effort to build a competitive team capable of attracting a major free agent in 2010. This is the story, enough of marbury, that ship has sailed.
Stephen A. Smith's role on ESPN has been demoted to the black cop.
The Tyson comparison is ridiculous.
Tyson was a far better boxer than Marbury was a basketball player.
Tyson also made far more money, worked much harder for it, no one ever needed to tell him he should 'get in shape' for a fight, and he had a much kewler looking tattoo on his face.
Finally, Tyson was far more eloquent than Marbury, and also scored with much better babes.
The comparison is complete nonsense.
I was going to read Live's, no doubt fascinating, short story...
...but I've decided to just wait until it's made into a movie for the Lifetime Channel.
Meanwhile...in other news....
Our other point guard, the one who went to Duke, is educated, speaks in complete sentances, and has yet to figure out how to work the word 'star' into his name...
...just broke the Knicks 40 year old assists record, with an ailing back, playing 45 minutes, after the team's two top scorers had been traded.
What a shame he sucks according to loyal 'fixers'....
You can just imagine how proud his driver was, when he came to pick him up after the game in his Bentley!
IS IT TRUE THAT PEACEMAN LABELED OUR HOST RACIST? WHATCHA DOIN DAWG?
"u have branded our gracious host a racist many times.
u have also cusssed him out many times over.
This are uncalled for."
MARBURY IS NO TYSON Y'ALL.
HIS MORE LIKE JOHN TATE OR TREVOR BERBICK. GLASS CHIN & ALL
WATCH BERBICK DO BREAKDANCIN WITH TYSON'S POWA
The Tyson reference obviously has nothing to do with Tyson being a convicted rapist, a felon, or anything criminal.
Although, need I remind you, both were involved in criminal cases involving some sort of sexual misconduct.
But that's really neither here nor there. This comparison has everything to do with the nonsensical gibberish that comes out of both of these guys' mouths.
We all know about Tyson's infamous quotes, but do I really need to go back and recount all the ridiculous things that Marbury has said and done in interviews over the past few years? Just search for him on YouTube if you don't know what I'm talking about. But honestly, I'd be shocked if anybody on this blog has no idea what I'm talking about.
Peaceman thinks the world champion Celtics, coached by a brilliant, ex-Knick point guard, and anchored by Marbury's ex teammate KG...are just itching to sign Starbury...(a.k.a Tyson's Crispy Chicken Nuggets)
Muwahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
Too funny...
Marbury needs to focus on only one thing the rest of the season:
Learning how to say; "Give me da rock"...in Italian.
Ahem...Mr Hahn has misquoted my client, and I'm here to set the record straight:
What Jerome actually said was:
"I can't leave New York without at least making my stamp and letting New York know I wasn't here taking money. That's not me. I've always had a passion for basketball and unfortunately, due to Krispy Kreme Donuts, I wasn't able to show 'em that side of me"
Marbury does have a criminal past too. What ever happened to
his DUI case in PHX anyway? He is def. no Mike Tyson though.
Why do we always try to compare black athletes at the
extremes with each other? Marbury is a whiny, spoiled brat who
doesn't care about his team, but a rapist or
a guy who sneaks a loaded handgun into a club, uhm no? Wasn't Mike
Tyson involved in an individual sport anyway, I don't really
understand the comparison.
D. Lee has too many limitations to be a 10 mil/year player but lets
see how he progresses over the course of the year. As for young
affordable players going forward, teams like Memphis and Portland
have an abundance of young gaurds we should consider,
especially considering our lack of future draft picks. The Thunder
have some nice young bigs as does Indiana, Sacramento, Sixers,
and New Jersey. We are in a whole new year but our needs
remain the same going forward, a PG of the Future, a guy who
can block shots but doesn't need shots of his own (Chandler,
Samuel D, Mutombo back in the day) and an court leader. Those
things will take us from a 35 win team to a consistent 50 win team
under coach Mike D.
@ Dajoka, Marbury did say it was always his dream to play in NY
when he got traded here . . .
You went way too Far calling him Mike tyson.. Alan .. you are obsessed with marbury.. hes not even the most controversial figure in the Nba.. Not even the most controversial athlete in new york even.. Move on and start talking about basketball
