Nothing imminent on Mobley
Starberman took a little leap today with a report that Cuttino Mobley is close to retiring because of the heart issue that has kept him from playing with the Knicks since the trade. I can't say I haven't speculated here on the Fix that this could be an end result. But I can say that it is a bit premature to report this as fact.
My sources have said that Mobley is still meeting with doctors and the test results won't be completed until next week. Then, of course, he has to meet with the Knicks to discuss where to go from there. The Rockets and Clippers reportedly both signed waivers to allow Mobley to play with this condition. What we don't know yet is if this condition has somehow worsened since he was last checked out.
As always, stay tuned . . .
I passed the baton to Hot Rod Boone, who covered practice today in the ATL and will cover the game Friday night.

You have to say this about Zach Randolph...he came to the Knicks with so much talk about his off-the-court behavior and questions about the kind of trouble he could get into here. And you have to admit, aside from perhaps a water fight with Nate on the bench, Zach carried himself as a professional from start to finish.
HoopsWorld ran a video interview with Randolph, who talked about the trade and his short time in New York.
"Everybody was great, Coach D'Antoni was great," Zach says. "This year we got off to the best start in six or seven seasons, so it was good. It was a good experience."
We'll miss ya, Z-Bo.

Agree with you here Alan, handled himself like a pro even with all those rumors of him being traded was swirling. Continued to get his numbers while wearing the Knicks' uniform till the end. Which helped with trading him.
Plus he still has not trashed the Knick's for trading him. I got much respect for the way he carried himself.
I wish him and Crawford success with their new teams. They were both good guys.
Word thats wasup Zach i miss that dude he was a good guy f**k the rep he had he was the man while he was here
I have to agree on Zbo. He played hard (especially this year) and
conducted himself like a mature professional.
I sat underneath the hoop at the Garden by the Knicks bench during a game last season against the Bobcats. Two guido-looking dudes with fat wads of cash got Randolph's attention while he was seated, saying they wanted to buy his shoes. Something like a grand for each shoe or something. Z-Bo was yucking it up with Crawford and the rest, although you could tell his mates couldn't believe he'd actually arrange to sell his sneaks to spectators during the game. As it neared the end, he changed into a pair of adidas sandals and had a Garden employee play bag-man. It may not have resulted in a criminal charge, but I thought that was pretty classless.
I'll sell my shoes for $500 each!
Eh... I knew the Mobley thing couldn't be ENTIRELY true since it came from Fats McGee. Personally, I don't really care if it's Mobley or someone we sign after he takes the medical retirement.
We just need someone else coming off the bench so we have a bit more wind in our sails in the final minutes. We've already let far too many winnable games slip through our hands for that simple reason. I'm sure D'Antoni will be lamenting those games at the end of the season, since it still seems like he's gunning for a playoff spot.
Listen...HOW LONG CAN THEY PLAY WITH 7 GUYS?????
I understand the CAP DUMP
but this is being handled badly albeit the front office is in a MESS of a Situation.
CURRY,FATSNACKWEAK,SPLINTER
and the injusry to Rooster, Jeffries.??? and now we TRADE for a guy that CANT PLAY???
Why cant we get a team out on the floor?
19 MORE MONTHS?????
If Im David Lee I jump ship this year. its TOOOOOO MUCCHHH
to ask any real player to sit and wait that long.
or FAN
I think we should bring Marbury back..
Yes I know he is a cancer and a poison but he will not be a
distraction just like he wasn't a distraction the first month of the
season. He knows this is his contract year so he will be on his
best behaivor. He will still be our best player and if Dantoni wants
to go to the playoffs this year, he will need Steph.
It's common sense!!!
Ok, I'll wait for the jokes to start flying and the insults will probably
follow soon afterwards. When Dantoni said they are going in a
different direction, that should apply for the entire team..not just
Steph. What about Q? I'd rather go in the direction of keeping Steph
keeping Q. Alan, you should put that on top of your blog again.
Remember when you said "The Wacky World of the NY Knicks?"
If that doesn't fit us to a T....I don't know what does.
Looks more and more like the Knicks are tanking the season on purpose or am I wrong Mr Hahn? ( By the way you have the best job! And You are the best @ it hands down.)
Other then Nate getting hurt our New regime has done everything they could to put us in this situation no? Benching Marbury without warning! Trading Crawford and Randolph and add on Marty Collins for Tom Thomas and Mobley? We then find out Mobley might not be able to play but still make the deal! When you find out about Mobley why not get us a pick? Or a guard who can play?
Why such a rush?
Why still shut Marbury out?
I know he refused to play right? Then why do we still pay him? Cause Donnie and D'Antoni messed that up thats why! So now suck it up and tell Marbs your sorry and move on no? Why is a bailout the only solution?
We cant be better off without him. Ok I hear he does not get along with his teammates but I heard that about Kobe just 2 years ago no? Kobe said it was over in L.A no?
His team hated him no? He was a cancer too no? Just 2 short years ago! Did Phil bench Kobe? Did they trade him? Buy him out?
Arrtest under Walsh was even worse no? Did he release him?
How does ridding ourselves of our best talent How does that HELP THE NY KNICKS WIN????????
A Coach brings a style a GM the players the players there game and together they are supposed to win .
Who on team has more game then Marbury? No one! Is it not D'Anoni's job as a coach to know how to get the most out of there players? Should he not demand he play? For the best of the team?
I need answers ALAN help me figure out why we are tanking our year yet again???
Um Dajoka I'll skp your comment in this blog which said "bring back Steph", and respond to your last one where you said no to Dirk. I agree with you 100%, he couldn't handle the pressure in NY. All those other guys would be great except Joe Johnson. He isn't a franchise or max type player. Atlanta is only winning now because of Bibby, you don't want to throw your money at Joe Johnson. Besides haven't we already had enough players with the initialsJJ who didn't work out?
This is not directed at anyone
Just my own opinion
But it seems to me Written in STONE that the SPLINTER
has this amazing game. That he is above and beyond some kind of amazing player
and I dont see it and I dont agree.
I've seen him play so many times and for every juke he puts on and amzing tear drop he makes
he misses one long 3 from 10 feet beyond the line
He turns the ball over leaving his feet with no pass
he bounces the ball of his foot or throws it away on the break.
The SPLINTER makes some "spectacular" moves
But his game is not as GREAT as his fans like to think
@Knickolas...Steph's game may not be as great as his fans like to
think but he is still better than anyone on our team as a player and
he has the most skill on our team.
@ knicks4life...you know your my homey but if you think Joe
Johnson is not a max player....your crazy bro!!
Joe Johnson would average 25 easily next to Lebron.
Now don't get me wrong...he is not better than the Flash (Wade)
but he is easily top 5 shooting guards in the league. That's without
question. Lebron is not a shooting guard. You have Kobe, Flash
and then you have Joe Johnson. You can argue T Mac or Vince
Joe Joe is still top 5 in the league.
Joe Johnson is the man.
And let me say it again...I would bring Steph back and let him help.
Unless the Knicks are truly trying to get a lottery pick...then I can
understand playing short handed for the rest of the year.
I just went through all the NBA teams and I can't believe it but you are right. He is top 5 if you don't count Pierce as a 2-guard. Unbelievable. I still see a max player as a franchise guy, I just don't attribute Joe Johnson as a franchise guy. More of a Scottie Pipen second fiddle player.
Marbury, Steve Avery. Bad precedents. Has sport turned into a popularity contest? Can players/coaches vote anyone "off the island"?
Hold on to Marbury. The Heat will trade Marion or give up a late first round or second round pick in 2010 or for next years draft for Steph.
These Knicks need to go:
David Lee
Eddie Curry
Jerome James
Stephon Marbury
Malik Rose
Q-Rich
Tiny Tim
Gallo Bust
Keepers for 2010 and beyond:
Duhon
Harrington
Ewing Jr. (Pending Marbury buyout or Mobley retiring)
Chandler
Jefferies
Joe Johnson as Pippen to Lebron's Jordan not a bad Idea.
But the team seriously needs size inside. No not the crispy cream, big time heisting the knicks salary cap size that the twin garbage towers of Curry and James provide. But rather a mobile athletic active big with a good motor. Doesn't need to be the man on the scoring end just competent but needs to provide the size and aggression to slow the easy pass opposing teams have been having at the Knicks lane.
I agree with the positive sentiment towards Zach, Z-Bo the Hero I say. He was a pawn b/c of his huge contract compare to his limitations but he played hard was willing to conform and take the opportunity for what it was even if the end result for him was to become a one way ticket out of NYC. He handled it as professionally and graciously as anyone could. Bravo Z-Bo, Bravo!
I actually would like Walsh, [ ]'antoni and Marbury to go to couples therapy and stop acting like stubborn children in the sandbox making a mess of a situation that could go quietly and painlessly into the night. Walsh and [ ]'antoni could use Marbury at the very least to provide relief to the overtaxed backourt that is now w/o not only nate but perhaps Mobley depending on the outcome of his follow ups with Dr.s on his heart condition.
Now the fool wants to play the organization needs depth at the guard spot. Rise above everyone play goodbye while setting perameters as to whose the conductor and orchestrators. Let a motivated Marbury use the time to prep his ticket to italy and ta ta at the end of the season. No more drama with this dude ever again.
They say Houston may come back.
I wonder how that would look.
Houston would probably get cramps in the first 10 minutes and
need 2nd career ending surgery.
@knicks4life
I was also shocked when I looked at all the teams in the league
and realized this guy was arguably top 3 SG. He has the complete
game including the one aspect that I think is most crucial to going
from a good SG to a great SG......A POST UP GAME!!
I would always dog Jamal because of the fact he could never put
his back to the basket and score. All that talent with the basketball
in his hands for nothing....damn shame.
I'm sure everybody here has watched Joe Johnsons game before,
but if you get a chance....try to watch them on the regular if you
can. This guy has handle, post up game, athletic, court vision
and he can shoot the jimmy right over you. He does this mostly
every game if not every game. I remember when he was with the
Suns....if he didn't bust his eye socket up and miss that 1 game
the Suns would've beat the Spurs. Old News
Just bring Steph back and see what happens.
Can't put him top 3. Between Iverson, Carter, T-Mac, Kobe, and D Wade nobody is drafting Joe Johnson 3rd. With TMac breaking down, Carter playing every other game, and Iverson starting to become more of a chucker he may be Top 3 by 2010 though. Unbeleivable, the days of the 2 guard running the league, when we had Jordon, Drexler, Reggie Miller, Mitch Richmond and Joe Dumars looks like its over. Now its all about the PGs and PFs, and Lebron of course.
Take it for what it is, but the hoopdoctor makes a compelling argument for Joe Johnson at # 7:
http://thehoopdoctors.com/online/?p=1233
If you get a chance check out the Spurs/Nuggets game. The Spurs play basketball the right way. Completely anti-Marbury. Parker and Duncan make their teamates better, and I haven't seen one scowl yet.
I'm sold Owned and Bought, 100%
Since CrawFUL & Zbo are gone and Mar-baby is not playing...who is the "go to" guy on this team right now?
If the NYK are in a close one, who's getting their # called down the stretch? I'm not sure I can name someone on the team that can fill that role...getting us a shot when they'd need one the most.
Anyone? Anyone?
First, Alan completely agree with u on the ZBo thing. I wasn't a fan when they first traded for him, but I was sad to see him traded away.
Next, I don't know why anyone who likes the Knicks would want Marbury playing. There are two reasons I say this:
1) The Knicks don't need a PG. Duhon averages over 8 assists/game (4th in the NBA) and plays hard on the defensive end.
2) One of the Knicks greatest strengths this year is they play well as a team (a lot of that has to do with Duhon). Bringing Starbury into the rotation would destroy that.
The biggest problem for the Knicks right now is their defense. They score at will, most of the time, but can't stop anybody either. Some of that is due to only having 7 players (which should be relieved when Nate and Jeffries return this weekend). If the Knicks improve to even a mediocre defensive team (which might b difficult under D'Antoni) they will make the playoffs THIS season.
When he learns the system it will be Harrington, for better or worse. Or pick and role time with Duhon.
brandon roy is a more valuable commodity than joe johnson, if not now, then certainly by 2010. there is every chance that oj mayo will also pass jj by then.
having written this, i love jj's game and think he does have the right stuff to excel in ny.
Rondo had a triple double and 3 steals.
and who did ‘great eye for talent’ give us? brainless Balkman
Thanks a lot Isiaih and enjoy ‘em Lunesta pills
@AR David Lee needs to go? Why? Only for a great return!
AR,
Lee needs to go but PE jr, should be on the team ? Cmon now, that doesn't make sense at all.
K4L,
Johnson is pretty darn good man. He would make a great Pippen to LBJ. All that won't mean a thing if we don't have a center.
Now the real question for all of you ...............
Does anyone here think, after all is said and done in 2010, that a team can actually win a chip playing in this system ???
Sup John Q, how you been? I agree with Joe Johnson being a very good player, it is the max contract thing that I'm worried about. As for can we win a championship with this system, depends. The last offensive team to win a title was probably the showtime Lakers. I think you get LBJ and Wade or Bosh and then if you are a GM, you don't listen to D'Antoni. You get a physical center who can run the floor and block shots, a PG like Rondo who is tough on D. thinks pass first, but can the outside J, and another hard nose player who thinks defense first but can hit the three (like Posey). Then yeah I think you can win a chip. To that end I think bringing in Nash would be a mistake (waiting for the hate), It would be entertaining, but with his porous defense, I don't think you can win a title.
