« Isiah: Chance of Trade is "Probably Zero" | Main | Deadline: 24 Hours And Counting »

Trade Deadline Buzz

With a little more than 24 hours to go before the trade deadline, here’s what we know, what we think we know, and what people who know tell us:

Knicks coach and president Isiah Thomas hasn’t so much as made a call to the Nets about Jason Kidd. That’s not surprising; the Knicks can win with Stephon Marbury, who turned 30 yesterday, playing at the level he’s playing at this season. The guy Thomas has always loved is Vince Carter, whom the Nets are said to be even more interested in trading than Kidd.

I found it interesting yesterday during Thomas’ three daily media briefings – morning shootaround, pregame, and postgame – that every time he was asked about the Nets’ situation, he specifically said that he hadn’t called them “about Jason Kidd.” Carter, who still has some explosiveness left, would give the Knicks the scoring threat they so desperately need to complement Eddy Curry.

There’s only one problem, according to a person familiar with the Knicks’ situation: Nets president Rod Thorn would rather cut off both his thumbs than trade Carter across the river to the Knicks and watch him instantly turn them into a playoff team.

When I sat down to chat with Orlando Magic GM Otis Smith at the Garden last night, I was somewhat surprised when he said he hadn’t even made an exploratory call to the Nets to find out what it would take to get either Kidd or Carter.

“The team that we have on the floor is the team that we’ll have on Friday,” Smith said. “At some point, don’t you have to sit and kind of let things marinate? You can’t change for the sake of change.”

I’ll be monitoring a few developing situations throughout the day, so check back later for updates on where Mike Bibby is getting traded (and believe me, he’s getting traded), Cleveland’s possible interest in Kidd, and whether the much-talked-about deals for Pau Gasol and Corey Maggette will get done before tomorrow’s 3 p.m. deadline.

If you hear any rumors you want checked out or have questions you want answered, send them along.

Are you insane? Carter will make the Knicks a playoff team? The last thing they need is an explosive scoring swingman, because they've already got an entire team of those! If Isiah Thomas pulls the trigger on that trade, he's an even bigger idiot than I thought.

BIBBY TO SEND CAVSTO FINALS

Lakers trade mims and draft pick to trail blazers for mc????? and trade mc???? and brown to nets for j??? deal to final today at 5:00pm

What about Jazz trading Giricek, Araujo (Hoffa), a first, and possibly Miles for Corey Maggette?

Hi, I'm from italy and my question is can u tell me something about Penny Hardaway? there's a team that would sign him?

Any possibility that the knicks make a deal?

Sam Amick of the Sacramento Bee has mentioned a possible Bibby to Cleveland for Gooden and Eric Snow deal...I'd hope the Kings would either also get a draft pick or Daniel Gibson in that deal. Any news as to who's involved?

How about these deals for the knicks -1) steve francis for kwame brown, aaron mckie, and shammond williams (mckie ans williams to be immediately waived) and 2) channing frye, nate robinson, malik rose and a second round pick for ron artest and jason hart? What do you think? in the laker deal, lakers get a point guard without messing up their core and the knicks get a shot blocker. In the second deal, we got a true wing defender that can shut down anyone on the perimeter and the kings get a power forward to replace reef if he goes to chicago and a point guard to replace bibby. Rose would be a throw in for contractual reasons, as his contract expires next season.

The Kings need to trade Bibby, Kenny Thomas and possibly "Big Nasty" for Kidd and whatever they need to toss in to make it work... (Preferably expiring contracts)

SacTown_Cool, if we can get anyone to touch Kenny Thomas' horrible contract it'd have to be considered a coup d'etat. As for a Bibby deal, I think we'll be looking to get young players to help us for the future as opposed to older players that would be better fits on current playoff teams. A Bibby deal I came up with that I personally like is Bibby to Miami for Udonis Haslem, James Posey's expiring contract, and a lottery protected first-rounder. I'd also go for Bibby to Cleveland for Gooden, Snow, and Gibson.

knicks cannot win with marbury, are you kidding me? please take the needle out of your arm

I guarantee you everything this guy posts is made up in order to get people talking and, more importantly, get people reading his article.

will maggette get traded tommorrow if do for who

here's something i pieced together on real GM:

Bibby, Shareef, Hart, and Potapenko to the Grizz for Gasol, Damon Stoudamire, and Rudy Gay

As a Kings fan, I even have to say the Grizz are getting raped big time there. Way to give them two Grizz castoffs though, haha.

Bibby to Cavs should ONLY go through if we get Gibson, Gooden, and a 1st...maybe something else in there to make it work, because I don't think that'd work salary wise.

hey are we 100% on bibby leaving??? if so how likely is it reef would go to bulls 2?

No way Cleveland gives up Gibson.

I'm pretty sure the Sonics are gonna trade Rashard Lewis to the Knicks for Nate Robinson and another body or two.

i love the cavs! no way the kings r getting (the wild thing) anderson varejao or bobbie gibson!!! you can have snow gooden and even shannon brown but thats it for that!!!! GO CAVS!

The proposed trade between the Cavs and Kings probably won't go down.
Sacramento wants Drew gooden, as the center-piece of the trade, and Cleveland is good with that because they have AV and he plays well in a starting role. Problem with this trade is the Kings want expiring contracts so they can be a player in the off-season. Cleveland can toss-in Scott Pollard, but they don't have a 1st round pick and a point-guard that will work salary-wise. Cleveland isnt gonna dump Gibson...not when he's been playing so well, and they will get him cheap in a re-sign. The kings don't want snow, and that leaves Damon Jones...a possibility, but another contract would need to be added...perhaps Newble.
There has been some talk about Portland and Minnesota joining the Cavs and Kings in a four-team mega-deal. From what I've heard, they're still talking...and the possibility exists that a deal may be reached (note: a couple sources believe the deal is all but signed), but personally, from what I have heard, I am not too confident in something getting done.
And althopugh Sacramento is trying to take the high road in trade-talks with Cleveland.... The Kings are the ones who NEED a trade, not Cleveland.
If the Bibby deal doesnt go down within the next 5 hours, then it'll get done this summer....and the Kings will get a lot less in return.

According to news-sources, Danny Ferry was never interested in Mike Bibby for Drew-Gooden.

Apparently it has been more "show" than anything else. The Kings were apparently ready to settle for Drew Gooden, eric snow, and a future 1st rounder.

Ferry nixed it.

This deal is dead.

wtf and omfg is right how could they do this
