The Ron Artest-to-the-Lakers rumors are heating up. The Sacramento Bee reported in this story that the Lakers have already contacted the Sacramento Kings about Artest. The Lakers are willing to send Lamar Odom to the Kings for Artest. But the Kings want the Lakers to also take Kenny Thomas and his ridiculous contract ($18 million owed over the next two seasons).
Seems like a great deal for the Lakers, who need Artest's toughness and defense after the Celtics beat up on L.A. in the Finals. Phil Jackson also likes shooters at the 3, which Artest can provide. Also, Jackson can keep Artest in check. Remember what a great citizen Dennis Rodman was during the title years in Chicago?
Meanwhile, ESPN.com's Marc Stein reported in another story that Artest wants a trade (presumably to the Lakers since he is close with Kobe Bryant -- and Odom) and is acting as his own agent. But the Stein story also said that the Lakers may be getting cold feet about dealing Odom away.
If the Lakers are indeed Artest's next destination, the situation won't be resolved -- if at all -- until later this week. The Lakers still need to decide whether they will match Golden State's four-year offer sheet to Ronny Turiaf. The Lakers have until Friday.
Stay tuned.
