Mayweather to MMA?

BY MIKE ROSE

Dan Rafael and Marc Stein of ESPN.com have a story about WBC welterweight champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. making a possible jump to mixed martial arts.

Is it possible?

According to the story, yes it is.

Rafael and Stein report that Mayweather developed a friendship with Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban during their participation on ABC's "Dancing with the Stars." The story goes on to say that Cuban also owns HDNet Fights, an MMA promotional company that airs its bouts on Cuban's HDNet. Mayweather and Cuban even met on Thursday.

I'm taking this story seriously. MMA is wildly popular and the money potential for Mayweather is great. Mayweather is always looking for challenges and this would be a great one.

Plus, I'm convinced that Mayweather is bored with boxing. He shattered boxing and television revenue records in 2007 in fights against Oscar De La Hoya and Ricky Hatton, both wins.

What other challenges are left?

Well, Mayweather needs to fight Miguel Cotto in a mega fight in 2008 before he makes a jump to MMA. That's the one fight out there that would be a major challenge, and the fight boxing fans want to see. But there's no deal in place for a Mayweather-Cotto fight -- at least not at this moment. I believe a Mayweather-Cotto fight will take place, probably in late spring or early summer. And if Mayweather beats Cotto, I believe he'll give MMA a try.

What do you think about Mayweather making a possible jump to MMA?

I don't believe mayweather will make it in MMA because he simple is not tough enough. The one trait all the top MMA fighters have is toughness. In one of mayweathers fights he almost went to the mat because he hurt his hand. I'm not saying he is not a far superior BOXER but, you need more than boxing skills to be a top fighter in MMA. I don't think he could survive someone taking him to the ground and pounding him or a hard slam. He should retire now and be remembered as one of the all-time BOXERS that ever fought.

LOL OH MY GOD! THERE IS NOTHING BETTER THAN TO SEE THIS GUY GET SLAMMED! THERE IS NO ONE IN THE UFC HE CAN BEAT! GO GETEM MAYEWEATHER! THIS IS A REAL SPORT WHERE YOU BLEED AND DADDYS NOT HERE TO PAY ANYONE OFF! STUPID IS STUIPID!

To say Floyd Mayweather is not tough is a terrible, terrible mistake. I've seen far too many UFC fighters flop to the canvas after being hit by marginal punches. I don't think he's going to outwrestle anybody, but he's extremely tough.

Hey, if he wants to make the jump to MMA, who are we to stop him, if anything else it will give the fights better tickect sales to see him get slammed, not to mention bleed! SO, if he wants to make the jump, then let him, it will just be something else that we can see as MMA fans. Besides, he still has Cotto standing in his way, and that fight is not going to be a walk in the park...

If Mayweather catches any UFC Fighter with a punch, they are going down, bottom line. I have seen to many UFC fighters go down on just grazes not even solid punches. You put someone like Mayweather in there without gloves, he is going to take someones head off. While I agree that if he gets taken down he will have a difficult time winning, With that said, in order to take him down his opponent will have to get through a barrage of vicious blows at a speed no UFC fighter has seen. Good luck.

Love him or hate him (as i do), Mayweather has been and is fantastic entertainment. I think he will go to mma as it makes financial sense, I also think he will win for 2 very simple reasons. One is that any contract he signs would have to stipulate that he wins (his ego wouldnt allow a loss) and secondly this would be possible as the ufc, or ufe (e for entertainment) as it should be called is fixed, perfect for the great entertainer!!

Mayweather is a fantastic boxer who has earned all the respect in the world. But with that being said, its like asking how well Lebron James would do in the NFL as a lineman. Its a stupid question. The fact is, Mayweather wouldnt even need to fight in the UFC. A C class fighter would make very short work of him. Mayweather has never KOed anyone with just one punch. And being a MMA fighter, I personally would know not to try to stand with him. No boxer that has ever lived has the speed to hit someone before they take them down. Shoot, all boxing matches have clinches going on all the time. What would mayweather do when the ref wont brake it up? I dont think that fight would go more then 45 seconds. Mayweather would get taken down, pounded or choked....fast.

LOL! i agree , take a punch from Mayweather with a 10-12 oz glove and talk to me , then try one with a 2-4 oz glove NOT PRETTY, sure try and slam him or make him bleed, GL not getting your face rearranged, UFC fighters dont do 12 rounds of punching , they do fall out from NON boxer punchers, one snapping punch from mayweather anyone in his weigh class, with all that weigh removed from his fists, i think will be completely knocked out. lets also not forget he has already proved himself against top ranked athletic fighting champions ..... who's to say UFC fighters should get more cred? GO MAYWEATHER real men will fight anywhere !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

a force to reckon with,no doubt he is a world class fighter /stricker/boxer, when he moves to mma, he will prettry sure get some training against take downs and some juijitsu,..question is he is on top of the boxing world, will he come to MMA and start all over again..im no mayweathr fan..boxers can take a punch... he is s force to reckon with,...i will not like to see him fight a juijitsu fighter, bec he really doesnt stand a chance against a black belt BJJ.. but i think we want to see more of a stand up fighter for his first few matches.cant wait to see this,

Amen, Mike! He'll be no walk in the park, for sure. I'd like to see it...

If he can develop a good sprawl (like Cro Cop) he can beat anyone, but that doesn't happen overnight. It's exciting anyway, good press for MMA if nothing else!

Heres a thought...does anyone realize that mayweather is intelligent....are you guys under the impression that he won't train in bjj and other MMA disciplines?...cause i for one believe he would take it very very seriously and would probably train at a level comparable to the most hardcore of mma fighter...furthermore mayweather has immense wealth compared to all mma fighters and can afford the absolute best training out there...so if he came to the ufc i guarantee he would be more than ready...im not saying hes gonna be ready to just take out the top dog in his weight class...but you can bet he'll take it seriously...cause under all that flashy cocky exterior is a truly driven and confident individual...and if he did this he would answer a question that has been lurking the past few years about whether boxers could hack it in mma....my answer is yes but we'll see

this whole blog and article is stupid, there is no way he is going to MMA, the status of MMA is no where near boxing. He makes 50 million a fight as a boxer why would he fight for less. MMA fights of the year aren't even a fraction of that. The man's about money!

first of all runaway weather biggest mistake is moving to mma theres not enough room for him to hit and run in a cage and second his weight class sucks if he moves up to 155 bj penn, sean sherk and gomie will eat him up

I liked this comment "One is that any contract he signs would have to stipulate that he wins (his ego wouldnt allow a loss) and secondly this would be possible as the ufc, or ufe (e for entertainment) as it should be called is fixed, perfect for the great entertainer!!" Haha this cracked me up fixed eh? Sounds like a true moronic boxing fan statement. I say let Mayweather try MMA, he will soon learn he can't hang with MMA fighters. Simply because no MMA fighter will be stupid enoung to try and stand with him, just take him down and ground and pound.

LMAO @ anonymous , great come talk under an alias u coward lol MMA isnt about money to most people its about proving wether or not u can hold your own physically with the best of the best only a true fight noob wouldnt know that , u thnk he isnt rich already? 50 mil a fight i wouldnt do more then 1 , and then id go to MMA for bragging rights !!!!!!!

As far as robert says , its easy to call someone a runner but i bet in the ring u would be running from mayweather hahahaha , irregardless he will have to watch out for BJ penn , ive watched his work he is extreme danger mma or boxer or streetfight , its gonna be worth watching to clear all this confusion.

As it stands right now, Mayweather would be beaten by most experienced MMA fighters, but with some training in takedown defense (sprawl), he could be a force.

As someone who trains with both Professional Boxers AND MMA fighters @ the highest levels possible, Floyd, of course would have a tough time at 1st. He will not be put in w the champs his 1st fight. Penn or Sherk wouldnt last 1 round with Floyd in a ring with 18s so lets get serious. With Floyd's athletic ability, experience, quickness and deceiving power he has the best stand up in the world. There is NO chance for any MMA fighter to be a boxing world champ. There is however a possibility that you can train a boxer to defend a take down, get better on the ground game etc and beat an MMA guy. Boxers can usually take a better punch than MMA guys. If he does get taken down he will be in trouble, for sure. But he is fast and athletic and will probably be in better shape than anyone out there. And to say he is not tough? The guy has been fighting longer than anyone out there and has an OLYMPIC medal, in Boxing. He has wins over some pretty tough guys. Corales, JL Castillo, Gatti, Baldomir, Oscar, Hatton.
These guys are not choir boys. Plus he has had like 150 Amateur and pro fights. Don't count him out yet.
And as the man said Floyd made like $50 Million this year. He is doing something right.

Floyd would not match up well against MMA fighters simply for the reason that he is a technical fighter. He finds the opponents weaknesses and attacks those all fight. I think he could make a legit attempt to fight these MMA fighers but ultimately it would be the beginning of the end for Floyd.

Anyway runaway weather wont do anything in mma hes a boxer not a submission expert not a wrestler not a muy tai practicioner hes nothing in mma just a boxer and a runner bj penn, sean sherk , and gomie wont let him run they will let him bleed and cry

Look at Floyd's physique and compare that to any MMA fighter, from an athletic standpoint he would immediately be the best 'Athlete' to ever compete in MMA. His stamina alone would give him an edge, then consider his striking, his footwork and defense. He's gonna do alot better than you might at first think. Some MMA fans make it sound like every MMA fighter is a mat or submission fighter which is plain wrong. There are alot of MMA fighters who do very well, champions even, who use striking as there main weapon and if thats the case Mayweather would fit right in to that vein. Not to mention the skill of punching which is absolutely maximized in every way in boxing. Boxers, especilay ones as skilled as Mayweather, punch from angles and with balance to maximize the force, they use head and foot movement and ducking, all skills that MMA fighters are often lacking in there punching and defense ( u often see MMA fighters with their hands down backing up from a punch, u will definetly not see Floyd do that). Bottom line a bjj fighter punches like a bjj fighter and a boxer punches like a boxer, who would you rather get punched by Royce Gracie or Ricky Hatton?

everyone that thinks pretty boy mayweather would dominate in the UFC must be crazy. he has nothing for the ufc but the only way to find out is BRING IT ON mayweather, lets see what you have. You have back up what you have said in the boxing ring so see if you can in the OCTAGON!!!!!!

Hell yeah mayweather bring it on in the octagon u will get slamed and cramed u wont last uwill run back to boxing then get ko buy cotto

WHAT I THINK OF THIS IS THAT .... MAYWEATHER WOULD EXCEED IN UCF... PEOPLE ARE TALKING HOW HES JUST A BOXER AND HE HAS NO BUSSINESS IN UCF, THAT ALL THEY HAVE TO DO IS TAKE HIM TO THE GROUND........ BUT THATS EASILY SAID THEN DONE ......IF U SHOOT AT HIS LEG U GOT TO BE CAREFUL THAT HE DONT CATCH U WITH AN UPPERCUT, RIGHT HOOK...OR A KNEETO U FACE ..... PEOPLE CAN LEAVE COMMENTS WITH THERE OPIONS .......BUT UNTIL THEY MIX IT UP...NO ONE CAN SAY CRAP......LIKE THEY SAY EVERYONE GOTS A PLAN UNTILL THEY GET HIT ....

Mayweather will destroy anyone in MMA.

Boxers are the ultimate fighters when trained at such a high level as Mayweather. MMA fighters are just really tough guys who can punch a little, kick a little and grapple a little. Even the most experienced MMA fighter would be NO MATCH for Mayweather !

I've seen sooo many "Martial Artists" get their heads handed to them by Boxers.... Boxers do one thing so many other fighters don't. THEY SPAR FULL CONTACT. You cannot learn to fight any other way.

I've been waiting for this a long time: A REAL Boxer stepping into the ring with these MM Artists. It'll be quick and very painful for them.

I hope Mayweather does it !

bobby youre right in saying mayweather is tough but as for the mma fighters flopping to the mat they are using 4 ounce gloves. Its like wrapping a shirt around your hand and punching some one its gonna be worse than any boxing glove out there. If mayweather did adjust to the gloves quickly he still has to get years worth of experience in kickboxing, muy thai, jiujitsu and wrestling fitted into less than a year its not possible maybe if mayweather was younger but by the time he has enough experience to be taken seriously he will be in his 40s. Yes Randy couture is 44 and still kicking but that is in the heavyweight division. The lightweight to welterweight divisions are full of young tough athletic competitors with years of experience. if mayweather fought for instance BJ Penn in the lightweight or Kos he would get killed. He might be an athlete but he is not strong enough at all. any fighter with any experience would have more than him. Basically swithing to mma means he has to learn the sports of jiu-jitsu, wrestling, kickboxing, muy thai, and mma which is dumb to think he can do that in a year or less. Cotto will win if they fight and he will dominate. Mayweather will panic throw his punches which will not effect cotto when he has him in the clinch and they dirty box because simply mayweather doesnt have the strength or experience to compete with these guys.

I have been a Mayweather fan since the beginning. With being said, Floyd has nothing to gain by going to MMA even though him is a great fighter most fan hate him. The man (Floyd) love two things "Money & Winning". A fight with Shane Mosley or Miguel Cotto, will get him more money then fighting anyone at the beginner stage of in MMA. I would even that it as far as Paul Williams (which noone wants to fight) or Anthonio. Two MMA is a different playing ground Yeah sure he is in great condition, however MMA is a 90 percent ground fighting sport. So i guess the real question is How fast if at all learn or try to master ground fighting?
