Will Manny Pacquiao knock Oscar De La Hoya out of the Hall of Fame?

It's a legitimate question.

This week I ran into my friend, "Richie from Levittown," who is a really knowledgeable boxing guy when he's not obsessing over soccer. I asked him, "Does Manny have a chance against Oscar?"

He said, "He shouldn't, but he does."

It was a brilliant answer because it's so true. Usually, a good big man beats a good little man. There have been some exceptions, but that rule has generally held true for more than 100 years of boxing. It basically means that with all things equal -- talent, desire, conditioning -- the larger fighter will beat the smaller fighter. Pacquiao has far too much weight to make up in this fight. On paper, he should lose.

But here's the catch. Will all things be equal? Will Manny have the edge when it comes to conditioning and desire? In the opinion of this corner, De La Hoya's major flaw is his inability to close the show.

There was a time when Oscar was among the best at finishing off an opponent. He still is. But there is a major difference between finishing off a wounded fighter and maintaining your skill and energy level long enough to win a close decision.

Oscar was ahead against Felix Trinidad, Bernard Hopkins, Floyd Mayweather Jr. and Sugar Shane Mosley. He lost each of those fights. Now, it can be argued that he was the victim of shoddy judging against Trinidad and Mosley, but the reality is, Oscar has not won a meanigful fight since Fernarndo Vargas (2002) and before that, Ike Quartey (1999).

De La Hoya deserves credit for carrying the sport of boxing through one of its darkest periods. He also deserves credit fight fighting the biggest names of his generation. But if he wakes up a loser on Dec. 7, we will have to start wondering if he is worthy of hall-of-fame consideration.

I give the edge to Pacquiao should the fight last the distance. We all know one thing is for sure it'll be intriguing, exciting and explosive. Not because DLH is the legitimate winner here, but because Manny will bring the fight to Oscar. Manny is the little man here, but Oscar will get to experience pure hell from start to finish. Just like an old saying goes that "Gold must be tested under fire" to see if it's pure!

nice article

Hello,
oscar de la hoya "the golden boy by far for me u rock oscar" cheers norma from australia down under xoxoxoxoxoxooxoo

Manny Pacquiao is a heavier puncher than de la Hoya. He will feel that punches and de la Hoya will be knocked out.

Win or lose, Pac will be a richer man!

Pac by KO in 10th if he can stay away and take the punches of ODLH in the early rounds, otherwise, ODLH by brutal KO in 3rd.

if reports are true that Pacquiao is doing fantastically great and hurting his 160 lbs sparringmates, He should do well against De la hoya. He might just have the power to knock Oscar in the later rounds. And if he maintains his speed and defense, I dont think Oscar would hit him full and hurt him.

I think the biggest consideration here is whether or not Pacquiao can handle Dela Hoya's power. If he can't, the fight will be over early. But if he does, then I don't see Dela Hoya winning. If the fight goes beyond five rounds, Pacquiao wins, probably by KO.

Very fair article. Oscar will win if he could put Manny in trouble in the early rounds, let's say up to 5th round, if not, then Manny wins by split decision or even a knockout, depending on the would be condition of Oscar in the later rounds.

sometimes we focused on De La Hoya's power...but if he cant hit the target, wheres the advantage...it will surely tire him up..his 1 punch would be counterd by 6 punch combo, and if he cant bully the little destroyer, the he will get chomped like the ghosts near pacland. i will bet on Manny...DEHADISTA ire..ay kagandang laban eh..

i believe manny can take oscar cause manny has the heart and thats what manny does to all of his fights, the heart is there and it shows how tough manny is, comes dec. 6 would be a great great fight between oscar and manny...

i believe Pacquiao has the chance, it's 50-50. Whoever has the stamina and the lucky punch wins.

De la hoya still has that power punch and because he's the bigger guy he will assert his size over Pacquiao in the early rounds. If Pacquiao loses concentration and will go for broke, it will be fatal for him. Both fighters are exciting and i willl see a brawl here because De la Hoya will try to close it early because of his questionable stamina....if Pacquiao will do in and out strategy it will last the distance and Pacquiao will try to knock out De la Hoya via body shots....

Manny has a BIG chance against Oscar if and when he sticks to his gameplan and he'll surely will TKO Oscar in the late rounds.

ODLH will KO the PACMAN... 11th round. why?
see the fair reasons here.

i sure believe that the fight between the pacman and ODLH will not last eight round. Oscar will fall and the referee will stop the fight by knockout. Oscar's face will become swollen and hiss nose with blood and it's over.

This is a mismatch in favor of Pacquiao: No way can Delahoya beat a prime Pacquiao. It will be a repetition of Barera VS Pacquiao I.

well said by brax, i have read your article..
and its all CRAP!

BTW. win or lose.. Oscar Dela Hoya should put to the Hall of Fame thats because he is a world champ! dont forget that.
ODH will be a future hall of famer unless he fights Margarito...

Pacquiao is name as the best fighter P4P in boxing for the time being, he has vigor and versatility, he is like blood of Bruce Lee and Jacky Chan thus the best Asian Fighter, he so very dangerous so far in his boxing prime. He will bring not only a the lift and right stone hands of a dragon on fire balls but has a hand with razor blades, even David Diaz saying his hands is like a razor blades as sharp as Samurai. So Oscar shall bring with the Lord of the Rings otherwise he will fill down in the 9th!

Pacman by TKO at 5th round.. Amen!

PACMAN WILL WIN IN THE LATER ROUNDS.HE MUST BE VERY CAREFUL EVERYTIME ODLH RELEASE HIS PUNCH.ODLH STILL HAVE THE PUNCHING POWER.

I think Freddie will KO Nacho in early rounds.
And Arum will hurt badly Scheifer and will fall and kiss the canvass.

IF he lost, I think its not worthy to put him there.
Manny will give a shocking KO to ODLH.

http://collecta-mania.com.au

BLAH BLAH BLAH! you talk crap! oscar will be licking and tasting the flavor of the floor! crawling on his knees like diaz.. and pacquiao will be wavin his flag again.. BUT! but but!
1 thing would knock pacquiao out of his dreams!
thats the interviews after the fight! you can
count on that! ahaha LOL! LMAO!

I believe manny can handle Oscar power. Speed, power and determination will be the key for manny to win this fight. exsoldier.

i think MP will conquer ODLH whether by decision or tko it doesnt matter. Manny is destined to be the greatest, it is written and it will be done.

This has to be the most idiotic column I have ever seen!! To even hint at the possibility that someone could lose a HOF berth based on a late-career loss is a totally ridiculous concept!! Did Joe Louis lose his HOF berth for his beatdown at the hands of Marciano? Or Sugar Ray Robinson for losing 5 bouts in his final year of boxing? Or Evander Holyfield for his pathetic recent showings after hitting 40? Of course not, a HOF fighter CANNOT forfeit his rightfully earned place in the Hall and Oscar earned his HOF spot several years ago when he won his 5th world title in different divisions!! I had previously heard the name Bobby Cassidy before and despite any previous accomplishments in the sweet science, your half-witted attempt at logical thinking has DQd you from any consideration as a competent boxing writer!! I hereby nominate Bobby Cassidy to be the Charter Member of the inaugural new "Hater's Wing" of the Boxing Writers of America HALL OF SHAME!!

lol walang mananalo tabla laban

Manny by TKO on late Rounds or ODLH by TKO in the early Rounds...

This scenario is a great possibility on this fight.

Bring it ON!!!
Daghang salamat sa pagbasa Higala..

I think manny has a big chance of winning against DLhoya, all he needs to do is avoid the left hooks of dlhoya cause it will be the big factor which can cause major problems for manny during the fight, size and height doeznt really matter, manny doeznt care about that he is very brave, he just need to train hard, focus, stick on game plan and and pray....... pacman by kO in the later rounds

stop the talking!!! lets wait and see.. There's one more thing left.....
LETS GET READY TO RUMBLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!

Sorry pinoys,Oscar will walk right through pacquiao like he does all smaller fighters. it will be just like his fights against jesse james leija and arturo gatti. big fighters are the ones that give oscar problems unless you have head movement like mayweather, which manny doesn't. You heard it here first!

Nothing is impossible for a man who has faith in GOD.... i think that is manny's best weapon against oscar... what ever our predictions towards this fight are, still only GOD knows who will be the better man in this fight! for manny, just train very hard, stay humble as you always do, keep your faith in GOD, do youre best and GOD will do the rest. thanks... goog luck to pambansang kamao!!! i know you wont let us down!.

If ODLH won't run, Pacquiao by a stunning KO in the 7th or 8th round..I just hope Hoya will last that far.

dela hoya won't last to 12 rounds. B'coz every punch of the PACMAN carries weight of millions of Filipinos. One punch could make dela hoya out of the game. Mabuhay ka Manny - Our National Treasure !!!

manny has a hand of stone, that could hurt dela hoya hoya. one punch could make a difference. Dela hoya's combo maybe effective in early rounds. But later rounds the pacman aggression would knock out DLH.

Well...we will wait and see who's the best comes dec. 06...who the first sting he is the winner.

Common guys...do you think MP will just stand there and let ODLH will bombar him with his left hooks etc. or vice versa. Surely, the 2 depends on how they will last the rounds...have the stamina, power, speed and game plans will win. disparity is non sense there's no such big or small i really don't buy that. This is a fight so it's how they'll play and have the fight strategy.

DLH advantages were just the stats..such as height, reach experience yeah.. what else? there's none. DLH should prove and use those stats on sync but if not, KISS THE CANVASS.
PACMAN watch out, DLH could be scouting you for years.. the trigger that Roach been saying, its now about to launch on december "dream match".
Lastly my analysis whoever wins, minimum of Php 350M goes to Pacman and DLH Php 525M, PPV and ticket sales not included.
Rematch is available if Pacman loses. DLH lose NO REMATCH.

Roach is really training pacman but not giving the right formula how to knockout or defeat DLH. Remember the ex-DLH trainor was with the opponent's camp before. Come on dec 6, pacman could be over trained which may lead to early exhaustion or under trained that could lead to a shameful defeat.
PACMAN, Filipinos living hero.. Godspeed!

I really hope Pacquiao will win this fight but Im also afraid that this will be an ugly fight and a Decision win to ODLH....How? ODLH will just use his jab to keep pacquiao at bay then when pacquiao goes to the body,ODLH will clinch him and the ref will break them.....And this will go on and on.........Hope this doesn't happen, or else it would be a very ugly and boring fight!!!!

Kaya mo yan Manny!!!

Surely the Pacman will fight like the style of Bruce Lee, Jacky Chan, and the Master Kung-Fu; he can hit ODLH at any angles while his body is flexing, his boxing style are mix with moves like a martial arts. I don’t think the fight will last up to 12 rounds.

ODLH will be grasping for air and losing his strength in the later rounds. A combination of age and body punches that MP will deliver. He will be digging for that liver of ODLH. Roach is ODLH's trainer in his last fight, So, He knows something, Although Nacho Bernstein will have a bigger and harder puncher than JMM. All said and done, ODLH in the first 5 rounds, If He can't deliver then MP will take over in the later rounds. There will be doubters if ODLH should be in the HOF. Add him to the long list of Great Mexican fighters, ie... Barrera, Morales, JMM.........

To Don from Yuma's point, Oscar losing to Manny is like Joe Louis losing to a middleweight or Sugar Ray Robinson losing to a lightweight.

And no, even if Louis had lost to a middleweight in his final fight and Robinson lost to a lightweight in his final fight, it would not preclude them from the hall of fame. But Don, can you really compare the career of Oscar to that of Louis or Robinson. Name the hall-of-famers that Oscar has defeated? A faded Pernell Whitaker? A shot Julio Cesar Chavez?

Don -- and all those who post comments -- thanks for reading and keep the comments coming.

I am an American boxing fan and fan of Manny Pacquiao. I watched the Larios fight of Pacman and understand Pac can be hurt if hit properly. At this stage of ODLH's career I don't believe he will be able to hit Pac unless he gets lucky or Pac gets careless. There ARE 2 things to consider however. One is that ODLH is a converted southpaw so that left jab actually comes from his dominant hand and Pac must be careful of it. The second is the "disparity" in size everyone seems to be talking about. Too much is made of the fact that Pac started fighting at 105 lbs. (and may have had to cheat to make the minimum weight). This was not cheating to lose weight, but to GAIN weight. He was a young, skinny guy and has simply matured in the 14 years or so since then. He appears to be solid and at his ideal weight now and should probably not be at a disadvantage because of some perceived weight factor. In my opinion this looks to be a very good, competitive fight until sometime after the 6th round when I think ODLH will run out of gas and could possibly be stopped for the second time by a body shot or accumulation of them. Since I am in The Philippines I will be able to watch the fight on big screen for the princely sum of $7.00 and I am looking forward to it.
On the other hand, those who say "God will help Manny" or that he "hits like the country of the Philippines" are just full of BS. He is a human being with tremendous will and skill, not to mention talent, but he will win or lose the fight all by himself. God does not have favorites in sporting contests. If the fight was between countries, then it would be an ODLH walkover because he fights for a country of 270 million and Pac fights for a country of 90 million (8 ~ 10 million of which can't get a job so are forced to live somewhere else). Just my perspective on things as I observe them to be.

If DLH survived 7-9 rounds, then Im sure pacman won by majority decission over DLH. becuased as we know dela hoya is not active for how many years while pacman is great for his last 3 fights.

dlh really must win this fight dont matter if its by ko or dec by an inch or a mile he must win to really set his legacy in stone his great wins over whitaker chavez quartey and vargas were to long ago and his biggest fights since 02 he has come up short although i feel he won the 2nd fight with mosley, pac is a great fighter but he cant give up this kind of size against such a great fighter , oscar is not what he once was but he certaily is by no means shot , i think oscar stopps many in 6 exciting rounds, im more looking foward to the hatton vs malinaggi and holt vs torres 3 fights myself but will be watching this fight friends beers and the hope of an oscar win

i am a big fan of boxing, i know DOH and pacman very well...i wish pacman will win.. but i still see DOH size and experience will be his edge.

It will be a great and unforgettable fight people will see. Its a clash between David and Goliath. I'm pretty sure Pacman will win the fight coz he has a pure heart, determination, hard puncher, speed, talent, and especially religious man. "He who seek and pray shall be granted"

I believe on what Freddie Roach is saying. Manny is like a son to him, a father will not put his son on dangerous situations. Manny will be stronger at 145. We call that MAIS POWER!!! GOLDEN BOY WILL HAVE GOLDEN MEMORIES.

Very interesting fight, i believe after watching De La Hoya's last fight against Steve Forbes my initial thought was he simply hasnt got it nomore, but looking back to his fight against mayweather in which he was so close to winning in my eyes, its one fight i cant wait to see. I think De La Hoya is too big for Manny.

I definitely go for MANNY PACQUIAO for a WIN ...this is if he will maintain the fight until the latter rounds of the bout...he'll WIN ..either by KO or UD...:-)

Some people just don't know boxing. Oscar getting KO'd by a much, much smaller opponent? That's laughable. Oscar has taken big hits from bigger and stronger punchers than Pacquiao. Mosely, Vargas, Trinidad, etc.

The only possible way of Oscar being stop in this fight is from sheer exhaustion and can't defend himself.

For that to happen, Manny will have to take the fight into an unbelievable pace from round one.

Manny is moving up two weight class, three if you count that he just recently moved from 130 to 135 and had only ONE fight at that weight. By fight night Oscar will be about 10-15 lbs bigger than Manny.

That's close to around 10% bigger than Manny.

I like Manny to win on a close but unanimous decision.

Only a lucky punch will produce a KO in this fight.

I am Thai Pacquiao's fighting fan. I request him to stay far from De la Ho Ya in the first five rounds and after that De la Ho Ya will be tired and has not enough power punces so that Pacquiao will win this fight by unanimous dicision. I am sure!

Manny Pacquiao is a MAN at the HELM... Remember that pacquaios body contains only 5% fat...and came from the race of Lapu Lapu...His chin came from a pre historic man..and the most of it...He have a blood of a Filipino Fighter..with a very BIG heart..

ISA LANGANGPWEDENG TUMALO KAY PACQUAIO.....
