Rossy to headline card in Huntington
It's part of the job to fight tough guys. But for Long Island heavyweight Derric Rossy (19-2, 11 KO), this fight on Nov. 25 is a little different. He's actually fighting a guy -- Bill Shahan -- who used to compete in Tough Man competitions.
Shahan, out of West Virginia, is 7-0 with six knockouts against modest competition. But Rossy said he's ready for anything out of this Wild Card opponent.
Speaking of Wild Cards. Rossy was a starting defensive end at Boston College and a teammate of current New York Giants, Chris Snee and Matthias Kiwanuka. He said he grew up a Jets fan here on Long Island but always roots for his buddies on Big Blue. He got into boxing when he began to hit the bag to sharpen his reflexes. "Boxing found me," he likes to say. Rossy has won a New York Golden Gloves title and the Hansen Award, given annually to Suffolk's outstanding football player. How many guys can say that?
Here's the rest of the Nov. 25 card at the Huntington Hilton: The co-feature will include Norwalk, CT's prize fighter Tarvis Simms (23-0-1, 11KO) in an 8-round battle with "The Fighting Policeman" Sam Hill (17-9-2, 11KO). The undercard will feature up-and-coming Welterweight sensation Chris Algieri (4-0, 3KO), NY State Heavyweight Champion Darrel Madison (11-1, 3KO, undefeated Middleweight Patrick Majewski (8-0, 6KO) and Eddie Irizarry (4-0, 2KO).
