Top 10 most disappointing NY baseball players in '08
This, so far, has been a baseball season defined by disappointment in New York. So why not honor the first two months with a top 10 list of the most disappointing players...
10. Luis Castillo
Who knew two knee surgeries will make a guy age 10 years. The four-year, $25-million contract the Mets gave him is one of the worst of the offseason.
9. Andy Pettitte
I'm sick of hearing of how he heats up in the summer. Let's see it now, because right now his stats stink: 97 hits, 10 home runs, 19 walks in 79 1/3 innings.
8. Pedro Martinez
Hate to criticize a guy because of an injury, but the Mets were counting so much on The Return of Pedro. Having him break down in his first start was not a good omen.
7. Oliver Perez
His biggest win was beating the Mets in arbitration for a $6.5 million salary. So much for him improving this season - he's taken 5 giant steps backward.
6. Carlos Beltran
Power anyone? He has only six home runs, which puts him on pace for 15. I'd say you'd want your cleanup hitter to be higher than tied for 110th place in homers in the majors.
5. Robinson Cano
He's now officially a slow starter, but we're almost halfway through the season and he's only at .227. It's going to take one heckuva second half to climb to .300.
4. Aaron Heilman
The Mets needed him to be a lights-out eighth inning guy to preserve every lead they could get; he's been anything but. And Mets fans have let him know it.
3. Ian Kennedy
Yankees fans in spring training penciled Kennedy in for 15 games, while Yankee officials probably were hoping for more like 12. He's at 0.
2. Carlos Delgado
Right now he's the symbol of the Mets' woes. For $16 million you'd expect more than eight homers, 30 RBIs and a .190 average with runners in scoring position.
1. Phil Hughes
Still young and still very talented, but the kid has to find a way to stay healthy. The other half of the Yankees' winless young duo, Hughes is still a ways from returning.
