Mark Spitz, Michael Phelps and their many gold medals

Ventured into Manhattan today to meet up with Mark Spitz, who was appearing at a promotional event for Hyatt Resorts outside Grand Central Station.

Had a nice chat with Spitz about losing his record to Phelps, the most recent SI cover in which Phelps emulates Spitz's infamous photo, where Spitz keeps his medals (a bank vault) and - of course - what he thought about not being in Beijing to witness his 36-year-old record go down.

Happy reading.

(And we'll have video of the interview online later today.)

(And, no, I haven't forgotten about the Q&A with Martin Truex Jr. I still need to transcribe it, which I will do soon.)
