NASCAR month special: Q&A with Jimmie Johnson

Here's the two-time champ's answers to YOUR questions.

-Why do you spell your first name Jimmie?
My father's best friend was unfortunately killed when they were teenagers racing motorcycles, and his name was Jimmie, and they spelled it with an IE. So my dad said then when he had a son he would name him Jimmie and he would spell it with an IE. And that's how I got it.

-How did Randy Moss and you get together?
There was a relationship with GM and Hendrick Motorsports, which was the Morgan Dollar Race Team that Randy now has the naming rights of. There was a relationship there for so many years that young drivers would go through that race team all the time and get experience. So when I want to run a truck race for more experience at Bristol, we went to that team. One of the perks of working with them is that Randy has a relationship and is part of that team now. It was just one of the perks that came with it.

-What is your favorite track to race at and why?
It's always the last one I won at, for obvious reasons.

-Do you have any favorite NHL, NFL, MLB, or NBA teams?
I love the football season. That's when things finally wind down for us, and I'm at home, enjoying being at home sitting on the couch with the television set and all that stuff. So I really enjoy the football season.

-Does your No. 48 have any meaning to you? And how did you end up with the No. 48?
There were numbers to choose from, and 48 was one of them. I've had a lot of success through the years with the number 4 and with the number 8, and it all fit in the place with the 24 car and Jeff owning a part of the team I was driving. So it all fell into place.

-You have a place in NYC. Where do you like to go while in the Big Apple? Any favorite restaurants, go to any sports games?
It's a great vacation for me. I'm out of Charlotte and away from racing, enjoying great lunches and dinners, visiting with friends, seeing some sights and just falling into the city. I love the city because you can do anything at any hour. You just look for it. That's really appealing to me.

-Why do you think Kyle Busch is doing so good this year?
It's all coming together for him. Great team, great driver, his experience is really coming into play. He has enough years under his belt to make key decisions lap after lap and he's doing that.

Do you want to do some more truck races?
I really enjoyed the event and the truck series is a great series. With the schedule I have, it's tough to say. But if the series came calling, I'd have to look at it.

When you are out on the track and you disagree with Chad’s decision, who usually wins?
Well, Chad really has the final say with what goes on with the adjustments on the car and the strategy in the race. I have a very limited perspective with what's going on. I can also talk about what the race car is doing and my limited vision from inside the car of what's around me, but they're pulling in information from my teammates, watching the flow of the race from an overhead perspective, basically. He really winds up making the final decision.

What did you think of Talladega Nights?
Absolutely that's a movie I laughed at, for sure. It's not what goes on in our sport, but it certainly was good for laughs.

How do you like racing in your home state?
I've been lucky enough to win here, so that makes it even more fun.

What do you like about your annual golf tournament?
At the end of the day, it's to see what we create putting this event together. We're sitting in a parking lot of a habitat building. There's four homes that are going up that are going to impact four families. To know we can put our minds to something, to do this and give back, just to see people come together and give back, it really is a special thing.
