Women's soccer league still planning to launch in 09

I'm assuming this because I got an e-mail today from Sky Blue FC, which is the NJ/NY entry in the WPS (WPS) league, about the hiring of an assistant coach.

You probably think I'm going to make fun of this, but you are wrong.

Young girls need to see professional women athletes out there playing and getting paid so they know there are options out there when they grow up. And these women are tremendous role models.

Too often our educational system tells young girls they are allowed to be cheerleaders for the boys. Girls sports are just silly and for fun. We provide them because Title IX makes us.

Is this league or any other women's league ever going to be as popular as men's leagues? No. And in this economy, it's hard to imagine anyone getting rich owning one of these teams.

But good for them for trying.

I bet there are many young women out there today who saw a WNBA game or (now-defunct) ABL or WUSA soccer game when they were young and started to look at themselves a little differently.

Here's the info on the WPS:

The mission of Women's Professional Soccer (WPS) is to be the premier women's soccer league in the world and the global standard by which women's professional sports are measured. Play kicks off in the spring of 2009, with WPS teams based in Boston, Chicago, Los Angeles, New Jersey/New York, St. Louis, San Francisco Bay Area, and Washington, D.C. WPS will expand in 2010 with Atlanta, Dallas, and Philadelphia slated to join the league.

I covered the NY Power for their website and for my tv station. It changed my hatred of soccer.
Those girls were really cool and great athletes. I really hope this new team arrives. I rooted pretty hard for them.
Tiffeny Millbrett was their star I remember.

Will the women professional athletes do as good a job as role models as male athletes as Plexico Burress, Roger Clemens, Chris Simon, Jim Leyritz, Pacman Jones, Jayson Williams, etc??
