Bill Parcells to help Florida Marlins count down to new ballpark

Miami Dolphins Executive Vice President of Football Operations Bill Parcells is stepping off the football field Sunday evening and onto the baseball diamond.

Parcells is scheduled to join Florida Marlins mascot Billy the Marlin during the Marlins-Colorado Rockies game to help tear down Sunday’s number to reveal the number of home games until Opening Day in the Marlins’ new ballpark, expected in 2012. The “game countdown” board is located on the left field wall at Land Shark Stadium.

The team is calling on celebrities, former and current players, fans and others to help with the new in-game ritual, which started after the team officially broke ground on July 18 for their new $515 million ballpark at the former site of the Orange Bowl. The number tear down occurs at the end of the fifth inning once the game becomes official.

Sound out of character for Parcells? He’s actually a big baseball fan, calling it the game he loved the most growing up in New Jersey. He took in batting practice and visited the St. Louis Cardinals clubhouse at Land Shark Stadium before a game against the Marlins in June. He’s become friendly with Cards manager Tony La Russa from frequent visits to the team’s spring training complex in Jupiter. He and Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano, a lifelong New York Mets fan, also visited Mets spring camp this year.

POSTED IN: Florida Marlins (124), Land Shark Stadium (15), Mascots (10), Miami Dolphins (59)
