The Who to play Super Bowl halftime?

SI.com set off a spirited debate this afternoon when it reported The Who is to play halftime at next year’s Super Bowl in South Florida. Not to mention the short item on the Web site provided an opportunity to put up a photo of 2007 SI Swimsuit model Tori Praver, because her body-painted outfit featured a T-shirt with The Who logo. (Right, I’m not the demo).

No, it wouldn’t be the first time British Invasion senior citizens rocked the NFL’s big party. Paul McCartney did the honors in Jacksonville in 2005. The following year, it was the Rolling Stones in Detroit – a choice criticized for several reasons, including that the performers should have been Motown artists.

But overall, since the Janet Jackson nipple-bearing wardrobe malfunction in 2004 in Houston, Super Bowl halftime acts have tended to be less modern or as I said in a 2006 story “more American oldie than American Idol” although McCartney and the Rolling Stones would be “British oldie.” Same for The Who.

The NFL wasn’t talking about the choice today. “When we have something to announce, we will announce it,” a league spokesman said.

But the Twitterverse was buzzing:

The LA Times’ Sam Farmer wrote “SI.com reporting the Super Bowl halftime show is.... The Who. Excellent.”

However, John Halpin of FoxSports.com said “A band full of guys in their 60s? NO WAY!”

Or this from Yahoo Sports’ Charles Robinson: “Honestly, Janet Jackson's bare breast was the best thing that happened 2 bands formed B4 1990. They all became Super Bowl eligible again.”

Other tweets on the subject:

" jsquared021: "The Who" is doing the halftime show of Super Bowl 44?...r u serious?...what is the NFL thinking?"

"Soxy_T: I like The Who but playing Super Bowl halftime?! Zzzzzzzzz no wonder they call it the No Fun League"

What about Santana. Given the fact it's being held in a heavily Spanish area. Santana is internationally known and they are still actively performing.

"You know who else has mass appeal?
Coldplay
U2
Green Day
Red Hot Chili Peppers"

It's bad enough mentioning Coldplay in the same paragraph as U2...but they should NEVER been mentioned on the same PLANET as The Who!

The Who are an appropriate choice not only because they are on a short list of the greatest bands of alltime, but also because of their legendary performance following 9/11. They may be Brits, but they showed as much respect for America that day as any non-citizen I've ever seen.

Live Live Rock!

Phinagain, you're right, I was referring to hip hop and rap artists. The fact is that these people continue to present thuggery and gang affiliation as something to be admired. The last time we had hip hop and rap (as I recall, P Diddy and others were involved in that Janet Jackson embarrassment to our country, and they were rapping), it turned into a slutfest on national television. How many rappers have gone to prison in the last year? The fact is, they don't know how to behave like adults, and until they do you won't be seeing them in a situation where they can embarrass our country in front of the whole world. And I'm sorry, rap sucks. They left a "C" off that word. At least The Who will be professional and OK for the kids to see during the Super Bowl. And Julian, Jay Z sold more albums than anybody who's played the Super Bowl other than Michael Jackson? More than Paul McCartney? The Rolling Stones? The Who? Bruce Springsteen? You're hilarious to even mention Jay Z in the same breath with those bands. That's a joke.

Bon Jovi would be great! With the new album out and all!

"And just what do you mean by 'these people'?"

When I read that, I was pretty sure that it referred to Hip-Hop/R&B artists. Don't try to make it something it's not.

In regard to the music issue in general, I do think it's getting a little old having all these damn classic rock acts every single year. An update would be nice. No, it doesn't have to be a rock group, but it should be a high-energy act with broad appeal.

Justin & Janet fit that mold, but they behaved like oversexed teenagers, and then there was the wardrobe accident.

They might be old, but The Who actually does have a good sound for the event. They have a big, expansive sound that works well in an arena. U2 also fits this mold, though, and they don't have to be wheeled on stage.

I'll admit I'm not a big fan of hip-hop (except old school) and R&B, but I have to grant that it's very popular. The problem is that it just isn't an arena-filling sound; it's better designed for clubs and smaller indoor venues.

Pink Floyd is great, but you'd be insane to believe they would play a Superbowl show. It's just not their style; besides it's not a hard-hitting, high energy act.

It's really not an easy decision as far as genres are concerned; I mean Barbara Streisand could still sell out a stadium, but does that fit the mood of the Superbowl? Of course not. But I still have to believe that there is an artist that has come on the scene since 1973 that could put on a good show.

'They don't have rap at the Super Bowl because the last time they di America was treated to a grinding, crotch grabbing extravaganza that culminated with Janet Jackson showing my five year old daughter her breasts. Until these people learn how to act in an adult environment, you won't see any of those acts at the Super Bowl. They suck.'

Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake are NOT Rappers. And just because you don't like the music doesn't mean they suck. Millions upon millions enjoy their music, so they obviously don't suck.

And just what do you mean by 'these people'?

The Who is awesome! I think thats a great choice. Led Zeppelin would also be sick too. Good job NFL. Julian is a big baby, listen to your iPod at halftime Julian, by the way you don't need to post your opinion 15 times buddy

My vote is a Miley Cyrus duet with Taylor Swift as long as they both use the Stripper Poles from there last two performances!

You want ratings, then look no further then Miley & Taylor Swift..................only problem is would anyone actually care about the game?

Ummm okay pain killer jeff, screw rock! just a bunch of lip synchers and coked out has beens who don't even have the voice boxes to scream at the top of their lungs anymore! Don't talk about what you don't know, I listen to a lot of rock, punk and alternative. But that's all they've had for basically every super bowl. Whether you like it or not Hip Hop sells and sonds way better than most rock which is why you "rockers" like to hate on rap..........

Screw hip-hop. Just a bunch of un-original noise that has all the originality of a book report.

Your right that mostly older white men go to the game. But at the same time blacks, latinos etc still make up a good portion of the continual record TV ratings. And like I said b4 the NFL is still 70% black so its only fair that you broaden the genres. Im tired of watching old time rockers every single year! And JayZ dosent sound bad live (if you've ever actually seen or heard him live) you can't continue to discriminate against other genres just bcuz some people don't like it or are sadly biased towards their own "rockers" give us a freakin chance! Jay-Z has sold more records than any artist they've ever had other than Michael Jackson.

It all comes down to supply and demand. Those who can afford to pay for Super Bowl tickets are generally older, white and male. Hence, what you get is old, white, male rockers (with the obvious exception of Prince). Next year we can expect Pink Floyd (hopefully with Waters and Gilmour).

Get a clue people, I like hip hop and almost any form of music BUT one thing is for sure most hip hop acts SUCK LIVE. I am hard pressed to remember a live hip hop show that had mass appeal. The only one that comes to mind was Beyonce at the VMAs. Im sorry but I would much rather listen to the who than Jayz rap to a stadium of 70k. You can barley hear him live in an arena. Rap, hip hop RnB tend to not sound good live.

Man this is some BS! Whether the NFL likes it or not Hip-Hop drives music and has been driving it for the last few years. Hip-Hop deserves a chance to perform! And not old school hip hop, modern day like Lil Wayne, Jay-Z, The Roots or Kanye West. From what I understand the members of The Who don't even watch football! This a fckn joke.......the NFL is 70% black, I feel like the musial selections should reflect this. It dosent have to be all Hip Hop either, it could be Beyonce or Alicia Keys. All im saying is its unfair to completely bar whole music genres just bcuz of 1 isolated incident (janets dress malfunction) or fear. I personally think Jay-Z would be perfect bcuz his music is the least controversial and the most mainstream. And he has 10 #1 albums, second only to the Beatles. Give our artists a chance bcuz with all due respect to the Who but studies show that the largest demographic for the superbowl viewers is ages 18-30 therefore anybody in that group or younger is way after the Who era. Your killing us slowly NFL, but I guess ill just change the channel during halftime.......oh well maybe next year hip hop...........

Maybe if any decent music had been made in the past 20 years then we would see some "modern" music at the SB....But it just so happens that there hasn't really been any solid music made in many years and the NFL is merely picking the best bands out there....Unfortunately, the best music out there is still 20-30 years old.

I dont get y hip-hop gets the blame for the Janet fiasco. Janet isnt hip hop and lets remember, timberlake was there as well. Its not fair. U can get people to perform and say "this song is ok, this song is not". They have gone overboard with this BS. Its ok to use up to date music on Madden video games, Nfl commercials period, and every other thing they advertise(y did nobody complain about the desperate housewives thing b4 that monday night game, or Hank Williams who snigs about pot and beer?) but u cant put up to date bands or music on the one of the biggest stages of the year? Its stupid. Janet was being Janet when she did that, and it was stupid. Timberlake was in on it as well. Y does all of music and more important, the fans have to suffer because of 2 R&B singers? Doesnt have to be hip hop in there but we all know the beats of hip hop music gets everybody jumping. Switch it up, have pop one year, hip hop once year, some banging country hit single, etc, etc. This crap with "the who" and other groups is getting outrageous.

Superbowl is something that many indoor lovers likes to play...

BallGames

The Who? Are you kidding?
I don't really want some Hip-Hop artist at half-time, so I can see sticking to safe pop musicians that have mass appeal. But come on.

You know who else has mass appeal?
Coldplay
U2
Green Day
Red Hot Chili Peppers

And they don't even draw social security yet (although U2 is pushing it).

Baby boomers are not the only ones watching the game, nor are they the only ones buying NFL merchandise and services. Wake up, NFL.

I don't disagree with The Who being a great band. My problem is that NFL seems to *ONLY* hire geriatric rockers for their halftime shows now. Prince was closest they have come to a real modern production.

I'm sure there are plenty of modern day pop and rock artists who can do a family friendly show, so I don't think that is it. Either owners only want to hire bands they grew up with or they just want to target baby boomer generation.

The who in there sixties are better than most.

Should have been expected. Ever since NFL fired MTV for Nipple-Gate, they keep bringing on old-timers to do their half-time shows. Lets run them down:

Paul McCartney
Rolling Stones
Bruce Springsteen
Prince

I am not saying these are bad musicians. They are some of the all-time greats. But Paul and Stones were at peak in 60's & 70's. Boss was 70's and early and 80's peak. Even Prince was mostly 80's. They each has had success after those peak years, but those were their peaks.

It seems that NFL has decided best idea is to target their half-time shows to the baby-boomer generation CEO's instead of the next generation of NFL fans.
