300 Game

We say it all the time - we are VERY fortunate to have jobs where we get to go to the ballpark every day. Tonight is a ballgame that, believe me, I'd pay money to watch. Roger Clemens against Greg Maddux, and yes they are both on the downside of great careers, but on a given night, they are still capable of doing some amazing things.
The contrast in styles alone makes it worth taking time to watch if you love baseball. You have the two most successful pitchers of their era and they go about it in completely different fashions. Maddux moves it around and is all about changing speeds. The Rocket is still very much of a power pitcher with both the fastball and splitter. No matter how it turns out, it's a real treat to see these two no-doubt-about-it Hall of Famers hook up.

There is an online petition to have Buck O'Neil included in the Negro League HOF induction. Why he was left off the lst is beyond me. Could you include this in your broadcast, please?

Are their any rumors floating of trade talks to get ready for next year, perhaps restructuring of the coaching staff and/or GM?
Go Cubs!

Bob Brenly.
I'm very upset about the way the CUBS treated John Mabry. The CUBS should have signed him instead of letting him twist in the wind for so long and then letting the rockies sign him.
Your comments, please.

I like your insights about the play of the game. I think you tend to over analyze and over describe the events of the game. There is no problem with some quiet time from the announcers as the game progresses.

With what's going on with Kerry Woods & Mark Pryor, how careful will the Cubs be with the progression of Jeff Samarja?
Posted by: Tyrrell Smith | April 9, 2007 2:20 PM
Huge Samarja fan. Curious as to status in Peoria Ill. Will he make it to Cedar Rapids Iowa for a game?
Thank you very much.

When the Cubs start to win! Why do they change the lineup?
Posted by: Ryan and Dayton Hicks | June 6, 2007 2:17 PM
Let me start with I have been a Cubs fan for over 65 years. (Excluding a couple of years I had to listen to the St. Louis Browns games to hear how Bill Veek was changing things.) I've listened to Gabby Hartnet, Jack Brickhouse, Harry Carey, Chip and some farther back than that, but I think you guys have the best comments on baseball and are a credit to the baseball world. I tune to a ballgame to hear and sometimes see baseball being talked about. You and Len keep to the game at hand beautifully. Thanks a lot! I haven't been bored at one of your handled games yet.
Well done!

Since this is a make up game and it only counts as a single outing, do the two games in april count as a sweep?

I was sad to see Michael Barret go. Do you think his episode with Zambrano had anything to do with the decision to trade him?

I don't understnd the barret trade, we need his bat.
What I don't undertsnd is Jaques Jones. I am sure he is a fine young man and i would like to see him do well, but when is the last time he's had a "timely" hit? Is there a stat of how many ground ball outs he makes? What is his average with runners in scoring position? lst year's numbers where hits when they did not count.

how far do you think the cubs are going to go this year?
Posted by: nick | July 18, 2007 4:03 PM
Bob,
I've been a diehard Cubbie fan for most of my 45 years on this planet. It's been tough, at times, as you can imagine, but this year is giving me a surge of adrenalin that I haven't felt in quite a long time. It's GREAT to be a dedicated Cubs fan!
My question, albeit a rather elementary one, is this:
The Statler Brothers had a song, many years ago, that was titled "Do you remember these?". In the song, a reference to baseball is made. The lyrics state: "Four foul balls, you're out". Was this ever a MLB ruling, or was this reference made soley for the made-up rules of youth baseball back in the "old days"? If it was ever a MLB ruling, when did it change?
Thanks for your time and keep doing a FANTASTIC job covering the Cubbies. You and Len would make Harry proud!
Go Cubbies!

where can i send sports poems for bob and len to read on the air?

i was wondering why it is that lou continues to use dempster as a closer. i did not play pro ball or manage, but i did play through college. it was clear to me last year that he wasn't fooling anyone and this year it seems worse. how do they have a chance to win a pennant without someone to shut down teams in the ninth.
thanx for your time

I have been a die hard fan of the cubs for many many years, even when they had their worst years. could you say hi to derek, alaina, josh, heather and tabitha for us. we moved to boaz alabama and only get to see our kids once a year, but i know if i am watching the cubs they are to. thanks.

What is the latest on Henry Blanco? His minor league rehab ended at Peoria on 7/29.
Posted by: jerry wayne | August 10, 2007 6:01 AM
Bob,
I just watched the possible interference play in the Cubs - Cardinals game. Check rule 6.06(c). There is no mention of contact being necessary in order for interference to be called. The good throw by Molina is probably influenced Angel Hernandez not to call interference.
I know you caught in the Big Leagues for a long time. I will bet you never umpired at any level.

It appears that soriano isn't 100% yet in left field. Is sweet Lou going to bench alfonso and rely on defense?

I'm not a boo-bird but I commend my comrades at Wrigley. Carlos must play the game, not perform. His play can be exceptional, his performance is always adolescent. Here's hoping his maturity will come in time! It is time! Go CUBS!!!

I notice that the same guy in a green shirt and pink hat sits behind home plate at all home games. He always has the same combination of clothes on...is there something to this?
Posted by: Melanie | September 17, 2007 7:41 PM
I was wondering if the umpires watch the game to see if the call he made was right?

Do you know the artist and name of the song played after a cubs win at Wrigley Field? I want it for my ringtone.

Can the Cubs maybe limit him to staying up late on the internet and video games until he proves a little more maturity ?( Carlos Zombrano )
Also I hope he does not speak out with the arrogance about winningt eh cy young and world series . ...I think it can happen !

hi bob i enjoy listening to you and len and think you do a great job.i like the baseball stories and used to love hearingLou Boudreau talk about the old days as history is so much a part of baseball.I'd like to tell you about a couple of my favorite 70s rock albums as you might like them
one is Bedlam with the hand on the cover.sounds like Deep Purple andRainbow.another is U-Boat by Woody Woodmansee.he was Bowie's drummer.you can find these and more at CD Universe.com

You said that Mark DeRosa should have been on 2nd on the center fielder's error in today's game against Seattle. Well, Soriano should have scored on the same play, because he should have been on 3rd on his hit. How are they going to get these Cubs batters to quit admiring their hits and run? Ramirez and Soriano are terrible at that!

I was just wondering after Fokudohme's day. When is the last time a cubs rookie had a perfect day at the plate, and how many times has it happened.

Len & Bob: Nobody asks for my good ideas, but I talk about them anyway. Your comments about watching Maddux and Clemens. Is a great reason for this idea. The Hall of fame requirement of eligibility should be changed from 5 years after retirement to eligibility based on length of career (Say,12 years). Or upon achieving one of the accomplishments that merit first ballot induction, such as
3,000 hits
300 wins for a pitcher
someone having a .400 season.
that is only one idea. another
would be to change ERA statistics to account for a pitcher's effectiveness for stranding inherited runners, rather than the outgoing pitcher being responsible for the ineffectiveness of a relief pitcher. An inherited runner on 2nd base should add .5 runs to his innings pitched. A runner on 1st would add .75 runs. 3rd,
.25 I'm sure you get my point. Iwill keep in touch.

The mic for the background sound at games is too high. It doesn't matter whether it is a home game or an away game. That makes it almost impossible to hear the the announcers. Is there a reason why the background noise must be so high? How about if you turn the announcers mike up?

why are all catchers right handed? why don't we see catchers that have a right handed glove and throw left handed?
