I still think the deals Jim Hendry made stink but who knows. Maybe they can keep this winning stretch together. That is what gets to me. Since the All-Star Break this team has been decent. They are going to have their breakout stretch, but it is hard to understand why you get rid of a fundamental baseball pitcher in Maddux and then hope that Glendon Rusch or Rich Hill can pick up the slack.
And that is the problem. In a rotation riddled with injury, are either one of those guys BETTER than Maddux. Why think about next year already? Why not the here and now. Hopefully if the Cubs make any more deals, they end up better than the ones on July 31st. You certainly hope so. Todd Walker, while a fan favorite was certainly more expendable with the Cubs having options at second. I hope Izturis is as good as Jim Hendry must think he is. To Jim Hendry: Keep the rest of the team together for the rest of the year. Let it play out and see where it leads. I wrote before that the season was over, but then I would be just like the GM. The season is not over, and that's the point. Crazy as it might seem, with such a weak NL Wild Card, anything can happen.....GO CUBS!
