Len & Bob's baseball blog: Let's Play Two

Let's Play Two

As Ernie would say, Let's play two! Doubleheaders of course are never scheduled anymore these days. The only time you ever see them is because of rainouts. You go back a couple decades and there would be many scheduled twinbills. I remember as a kid going to Tiger Stadium to see twi-night doubleheaders, which started at (believe it or not) 5:35! Doesn't that seem really late to start a doubleheader? You'd never see one begin that late now.

These are interesting days because of the pitching situation. Obviously, getting a long outing from your Game 1 starter is huge because if you have to use up your pen in the opener, it creates a touchy situation for Game 2. You never want to use too many guys twice in one day, especially with another game coming up the
following day. When you think about it, the Cubs will play 3 full games in about 28 1/2 hours over the next 2 days. That's 27 innings that need to be eaten up by somebody and you really cannot afford to have one of your starters go less than 5 innings in any of those
games if you can help it.

So, we'll see how the rookies fare today. Carlos Marmol in Game 1 and then Juan Mateo making his big league debut in the nightcap. Mateo becomes the 6th Cubs rookie to make a start for the club in 2006.

Get settled in for a full day of Cubs baseball here on WGN Sports...we'll have it all for you!

Len,

Will both games be televised today 8/3?

Eternal Cubs Optimist,

Justin (Indianapolis)

I was going to ask this question, but you beat me to it with a partial answer. I also remember regularly scheduled double-headers when I was growing up in the '50s and '60s. Based on what you stated, does this mean that the current batch of so-called "Major-Leaguers" are a bunch of wusses and pansies? Why can't todays batch of much healthier and physically more fit players, making multi-6 figure salaries, play 2 games on the same day? And why were the pitching staffs scaled back in the late '80s? I remember pitchers finishing games...not numbers of pitches per game.
Thanks...from a long ago Cub fan.

so much for "saving the pen"!!!the rest of this nseason is gonna be very painfull to watch with all of these rookies, you dont know what to expect on any given day,no lead is safe late....e.t.c.

hey guys,
i just wanted to say that i have been a cubs fan all my life and im born and raised phoenix az. I think im the only one who still believes we could still win this but with our lousy management we dont stand as chance. they gave up half way through, i dont blame any of our problems on the cubs i blame them all on jim hendry and dusty baker, get rid of them and we might stand a chance

Hey Len and Bob, I was wondering what u think Carlos Marmols Problem is, why he can't have a game without 4+ walks. And do u think Juan Mateo will have a strong game 2.

Hey guys,
I am visiting my grandparents in St. Louis and am jealous of the weather you're getting. We'd give anything to have a cool mist wherever we walked. It was well put the way you both said Marmol needs to work through this no matter what. Sure it would be great to get the win, but I like our chances with a well rested pen for the second. Hang in there, I know you have a long day ahead of you.
You simply are the best combo in baseball. GO CUBS!

How we continue to get beat and beat good by MEDIOCRE teams is beyond me. This team looks great one day and like the Kansas City Royals the next. It's JUST TOO PAINFUL. Ah well... BACK TO THE PEPTO.

Any idea who is singing the 7th inning stretch tomorrow? I ask because Jimmy Buffett is in town for a concert and didn't know if he would be stopping by Wrigley.

the bases have been loaded 3TIMES SO FAR and we have not scored any runs from this, this team just keeps on amazing me at how awfull they can be.

and yes "ED" you are the only one left that thinks they can still win this.

Eight hits and four walks, but they can only score one run! As my 88-year-old father says, they're carrying too much weight in their back pockets.

Pathetic!

Can you guys clean the lens on the robo cam?

Sorry Cub Fan - the camera is 15 feet off the ground and we don't have access to the field in between games. The rain and mist from Game 1 dirtied the lens.

It was nice to see 2 gm today beacuse in the scond gm the cubs bats were going good mateo was good when he made his 1st start as a cubs pitcher.
go cubs!!!

Can you post or email me Bob singing the 7th inning stretch?...Please....because people told me and said they saw me during the song on WGN, Thanks guys

I am really beginning to look foward to watching the games every day again. It seems like maybe the dark cloud is rising.

Len, I have heard you enjoy talking on various message boards, and we have a new fan forum up we would like to invite you to check out! cubsclub.net. Hope to see ya there! (Bob, you are invited as well!)

Hi Len,

Back in 1970's (I am 46 years old), I remember going to one doubleheader game each year in July. My Dad, my cousin's husband and his girls would go along as well. We would have a Foot Long Hot Dog where the McDonalds is at now. We would always sit behind home plate in the Grandstand area. I remember seeing Santo, Kessinger, Beckert & Banks in the infield, Hundley catching, Monday & Hickman in the outfield, and Jenkins, Holtzman and Nye pitching. I was only about 10 or 12 years old, but I remember them as it was yesterday!!

The players may or may not be wusses, but that has nothing to do with the lack of scheduled double-headers. It's ALL about $$$. When you sell out 81 home dates, why reduce the number of home dates to 80 or 79 by creating double-headers?

And ED - I don't like everything the Cub braintrust has done the past couple years either, but they didn't break DLee's wrist. And the posts here and other places were solidly AGAINST involving Prior in a trade for Tejada or Abreau last winter. So don't hang a bunch of "I-told-you-so"'s on Prior's season either.

But Ed, I don't exactly think the Cubs can still win this thing, but I do think August and September can be very interesting! After the absolute disaster that was May and June, pieces seem to be falling into place. I think the "starting 8" may be only one player away from being very respectable. Even the rotation has begun to show enough potential to make me think they could be just one arm away as well. And with Wood, Maddux and Pierre (assumedly) dropping off the payroll (totalling somewhere around $20 mil./yr.) there should be some room in the budget for free agent activity.

Keep your head up ED

We trade carlos like we trded juan cruz get someone who can trow strikes and not walk 6.5 guys a game.like roy oswalt is free get make a big piching change. Keep marshel and hill and prior and bigZ there fine or try to make ardsmen a starting picher!
