Mark Of A Winner

We've seen some great defense from Mark DeRosa over the past week, but the best part about it is that he is doing it all over the diamond. He's played right field, third base, second base, and done it all well. He is a very natural defender no matter where you put him on the field.

It's one thing to be a utility player and be able to play more than one position, but something else to be able to play them the way Mark does. He looks comfortable and natural in each spot and as I have said repeatedly, has a rhythm to his game on defense. I know from experience that when I went to third base or outfield I could knock the ball down and make a play. Mark does it at another level where he's not filling in, he can play and excel at the position and handles it all like a true pro.

One thing that's not mentioned in this blog entry is the way he's been hitting at the plate lately. He's on fire right now and he always seems to do well at the plate but lately he's been better than ever.

I became a big fan of DeRosa very quickly. I can't believe how nimble and quick he is no matter where Lou sticks him. And, his bat, well we know what he can do with his bat. He is a good 2nd baseman, and a great utility player.

Listen..
I know the BREWERS are a good hitting team, good pitching team, etc... BUT... RICH HILL is doing this ONE GOOD OUTING, ONE BAD OUTING CRAP AGAIN. We've battled to get to this series with the intent of FINALLY making a move, and we give up 5 in the first, HILL has 159 pitches through 2, and we're facing a GOOD young stud,
with SHEETS on tab for tomorrow. So much for making a move, huh??????? Where's the PEPTO????

I don't know how anybody else feels about DeRosa but I think he is a fantastic ball player. The Cubs are blessed to have a truly gifted utility player like DERO in the lineup. I agree with Bob on this point...it's just something about him; not just anyone can play with such comfort and agility as he does. DERO makes it look easy! So this is my request...please make a DeRosa shirt so I can represent this great ball player!!! I can't find one anywhere! GO CUBS GO!

nick name for Fontenot

"Little Big Man"

fot to trot

Mike Fontenot should honorably be dubbed The Fancy Lad, a tribute to his namesake played by Chris Elliott in the movie Cabin Boy (one of Hollywood's most grossly unappreciated comedies). In my Cub-loving household this legendary movie character is more than appropriate to testify to Mike's uncomparable hitting and fielding skills!

DeRosa has been hot lately. him and the rest of the offense neeeds to keep it up to surpass the Brewers.

P.S. Fontenot's nick name should be Keebler....he looks like a 'Super Elf'!!!

From Tony Tommy and Johnny from Highland, In

A very good nickname for Mike could be Mr. Fontastic

A very good nickname for Mike could be Mr. Fontastic.

i agree bob dero has been awesome, but there are some who have not done nothing with the bat bigtime even though we are wininnng, first off pie is looking likey corey pattersons last year with the cubs, pie needs to be in the minors for another year, and we need to do whatever we can do to get griffey cause jones needs to go REALLY BAD,other then these issues and the short awfull outing today we have been doing pretty good.

Fontenot nickname:

"Holy Font"

mikes nick name shold be baby ruth

Fontenot nickname:

I think Fontenots' nickname should be Footnote. What do you think?

Mikes name should be FontenYES,
FontenOH YEAH, Fontmeister, Sir Mike Fonty, young gun, little lefty, Aunty Fonty, or ,Fontee, Lil Font

Bob,

You seem to be so impressed by the way DeRo plays 2B and 3B. Just wait until Uncle Lou finally moves him to SS -- probably his best position.

JD

I have always called Fontenot, Foot Note.

THE CUBS ARE BACK, BABY!!!!
THIS IS NEXT YEAR!!!

Mark De Rosa is a good one!
Go Cubs!

Fontenot nickname- THE REAL F BOMB

Did I mention in my earlier post that I NEVER had a doubt about the outcome of today's game?????? ARAMIS IS THE BEST THIRD-BASEMAN IN BASEBALL. PERIOD. And what a job by the PEN, FONTENOT AND SORIANO to get LEE and RAMIREZ the chance to win it!!!!!! UNBELIEVABLE.
I LOVE YOU CUBBIES, YOU HAD ME AT 5-0......

A few things:
1: Mike "Times new roman Font-enot"
2: Earlier I was going to comment about your guys positive attitude while the Cubs gave up numerous first inning runs. good going
3: Len- your call on A-Ram's homer is being played everywhere. Congrats on that, but Thank you! for the first time since Harry, a broadcaster has displayed emotion similar to a Cubs fan. It felt like you were jumping up and down in my living room with me. Now I can listen to your call of the homer and instantly feel like when I first saw the dinger, and that is what great broadcasting is all about!! Thanks again, from the biggest Cub fan in the smallest Nebraska town. John Korthals

I agree with you Bob. There's been a lot of excitement during this winning streak about Cubs offense, but what I'm most excited about is how they've picked up on defense. DeRosa is just one of many who's finally started giving our starting pitching some back-up. I love watching Soriano make big plays from the outfield, D-Lee making the big stretch to get some fast guy out at first, Theriot and Fontenot turning double-plays.
It's because the Cubs have improved on both sides of the ball that they are in this winning streak. That's what makes watching games so exciting.

I echo John's comment....Len, your call of ARam's dinger was AWESOME. It actually brought tears to my eyes, and I replayed it dozens of times last night -- the goosebumps never went down. You and BB are doing an amazing job (trust me -- with the dish I see lots of other broadcast teams, and you guys are at the very top), and to hear your genuine emotion means so much to us fans.

Lenny C, you still crack me up.

I like fontastic for Mike name I had the same Ida.But what about M3 for Migthy Mouse Mike?

Where's Ron Cey?

Yesterdays win means nothing now with this gutless, heartless performance by this terrible pitching staff. Cubs needed a sweep....period. This team will never be more than a 500 team....if that. If I performed at my job with the amount these heartless scumbags get paid, I'd have been fired April 15th.

Does the S in Mr. S stand for STUPID? I think it should stand for SHUT UP. It was one game, a bad one at that ... but don't give up just yet ... there's always tomorrow!

Yeah, there is still tomorrow. We never liked to win'em all anyway.
Have faith and BELIEVE!!!

Furthermore, how can you expect the team to believe in itself and go out there and win ballgames ... when you pseudo fans give up all hope each time we lose a game? If you're going to be a fan, love them during their losses too. It's not like they go out there intentionally to lose ballgames! No one is going to go out there and win them all. But you've gotta have faith. Without it, you have nothing.

Alanna, sorry if I'm not a rose colored glasses fan. I speak the truth and tell it the way it is. If you can't handle that, too bad. I've watched this team for 50 years...played and coached baseball for 20 of those years. Tired of the gutless performances, not just this year but since 1984 and before that. 2003 was just a choke job. If they don't win tomorrow, what good is it? Even if they do win, what good is it?. They didn't do thier jobs....period. Don't even tell me there's 80+ games left. I'm tired of hearing that lame a$$ excuse. Heard it since there were 161 games left and hear the same garbage every year. This team has no heart and no balls.

Go Cubs!

It's been an interesting first half.

Last year at this time the Cubs were fielding a team with the likes of Neiffi Perez at 2B, Ronny Cedeno at SS and Todd Walker at 1B. This year, the problem is trying to find enough AB's for too many quality players.

Last year, you needed to a minor league Who's Who? book to figure out who was in the Cubs' rotation. This year, the top four starters haven't missed a start, and have a combined W/L record of 26-19 with a 3.77 ERA.

And yes, Pie is still learning. But no, Leo S., he's not another Patterson, for that very reason. He's learning. In the meantime, Pie contributes with his glove, arm and legs. And fortunately, Lou has learned more quickly than Dusty that it takes more than speed to hit at the top of a line-up.

I think the ship has been righted, and that barring a series of crippling injuries the Cubs have a solid shot at playing in October.

I agree with you Kate. I've been waiting for the DeRosa t-shirt to come out since the second week of the season. The guy at CubWorld assured me it was on its way, but I haven't seen it yet...
