Step Up To The Mike
I'm going to steal an idea from our pals over at the Cubs.com message
board. They've posted a question about Mike Fontenot, who, in their
opinion, needs a fun nickname. So, we'll help them out a bit and
solicit ideas for Mighty Mike or Fonty, which he's been called at
various times throughout his life. Any ideas for a nickname for one
of the hottest hitters in baseball?

Comments
Since he's from New Iberia (home of Tabasco sauce), I think his name needs to be Tobasco, or just Basco.
Posted by: Greg Garius | June 29, 2007 12:38 PM
The first day Fontenot hit a home run I dubbed him "Mighty Mouse" and I've stuck with it ever since. GO CUBS!
Posted by: BorowskiMark | June 29, 2007 12:39 PM
First before I say my idea for a nickname, I just want to say that he is one of the hottest players in baseball right now. If I remember right, you said in his last game that he got a hit 7 out of his 10 last times. Who get's a .700 average?! Seriously. Also I think his nickname should be Fonty like you guys said. It's short sweet and to the point. And it's not disgustingly annoying like some of the nicknames other announcers make up for players. *coughKenHarellsoncough*

Since the filming of Batman brought so much excitement to the city and Fontenot swooped in and brought excitement to Wrigley...i say call him BatMan, the Super Hero of the North Side! Or at the very least let him be the BATMOBILE
Posted by: Pam | June 29, 2007 12:59 PM
Ok you said funny and I think his name is a pain in the butt, just as much as mine so my son and I call him "funny-toe". Silly, but it works.
Posted by: Christine Balliet | June 29, 2007 2:12 PM
Fonty Python... or maybe forest fire fontenot
Posted by: Peter V | June 29, 2007 2:29 PM
I myself have dubbed Fontenot "Fonte-YES" but would happy if it caught on.
Posted by: Molly | June 29, 2007 2:29 PM
Fontenot? FonteYES!
Posted by: taylor | June 29, 2007 2:29 PM
My buddies over at Bricks and Ivy Radio as well as, the Sons of Ivy. Have dubbed him "Silent T." Holla!

"fontenot's up? YES."
Posted by: cliff | June 29, 2007 2:30 PM
Mike 'why do i have to be on the cubs' Fontenot
Posted by: tom | June 29, 2007 2:30 PM
We should call him wingdings because of the "font"
Posted by: Troy | June 29, 2007 2:30 PM
Because he's so clutch, I think we should call him "The Knot."
Posted by: Mark | June 29, 2007 2:30 PM
I would say "Fontzie"
Like Fonzie.
or it could be Fontz
I just thought about and thought it was kinda cool.
I Hope we don't trade this guy, so he can go be a superstar somewhere else
Posted by: Bryan Richardson | June 29, 2007 2:30 PM
How about "Fontzy" (as in Fonzy from Happy Days)
Posted by: Damian | June 29, 2007 2:31 PM
My group of Cubs fans here in Amarillo, TX have been calling him Ghee Fontenot in honor of the character from the movie Almost Heroes. It's just fun to say.
Posted by: Matt Cobb | June 29, 2007 2:31 PM
I think the best name for Mike would be The Font. That way what looks like what could be our double play combo for some time will be "The Riot" at short and "The Font" at second.
However, I really don't care what he is called as long as he keeps hitting.
Posted by: Matt | June 29, 2007 2:31 PM
The answer is simple: Fonty Python

How about the CRAWFISH CRUSHER!
Posted by: corycub | June 29, 2007 2:31 PM
well if you think about it Mike Fontenot has been a strong hitter no matter what has been going on in the line up. therefore i believe his nickname should be Mike " The Fort" Fontenot
Posted by: Sean Fuentes | June 29, 2007 2:32 PM
Ha. We had a similar thread at our cubscast.com message board. Our favorite listener submitted nicknames were "Fonte-Yes" and "Wanta-Fanta"

Posted by: Jeremy | June 29, 2007 2:33 PM
Since Mike has started to become such a force for the Cubs ive been telling myself lately that if I make it to another game I'm going to bring a sign that says Fonteyes. Probably doesnt roll off the tongue but its a thought!
Posted by: Nate Wendell | June 29, 2007 2:33 PM
the best name for Mike Fontenot would be "The Fontenator". i was watching the game and i heard u talking about how he needs a nickname so i decided to go to my computer and give u this great idea!
Posted by: Tyler Kingsley | June 29, 2007 2:33 PM
Len, Bob i think fontenot shouldnt just have a nickname i believe he should also have a saying for example my favorite saying that i came up with was "Fontenot, Fonten-YEEESSS". If you like this idea could you please give me some sort of sign during the Brewers game. Were down 5 but we are going to rally back. GO CUBS.
Danny

How about "Little Big Man"
Posted by: Tom Wolfenden | June 29, 2007 2:34 PM
Down here in Lousisana, Mike would simply be called "Fonteneaux."
Other suggestions: 1)"Ti" (pronounced, "tee" Cajun for little), 2) L'il Mudbug (slang for crawfish)
Posted by: Ronald E Fields, MD | June 29, 2007 2:34 PM
Call em Mike FonteYES!!! I just want to say that i am a die-hard cubs fan and I am only 12!!! It would be sweet if Len Kasper would read this on Television!!!

Posted by: James Hatchett Jr | June 29, 2007 2:35 PM
I like Greg's idea but we could name him after Kid Elberfeld and call him The Tabasco Kid. He was also a short player at 5'5".
Posted by: Kevin | June 29, 2007 2:35 PM
The First time I saw his name the first thing that came to my mind was footnote.

Posted by: Roland Valle | June 29, 2007 2:36 PM
Being that Mr. Fontenot is from Louisiana, how bout the Cajun Sensation. Or a play on words, instead of FonteNOt..how bout FonteYES! Go Cubbies, lets get some runs!
Posted by: Joe | June 29, 2007 2:36 PM
I think his name sould be Fantastic Fount
Posted by: Anonymous | June 29, 2007 2:36 PM
Well if i am correct Mike Fontenot has been a pillar in the Cubs line up ever since he came into it. No matter what is going on in the rest of the line up Mike always seems to keep his composure and keep his team in the ball game. That why i think his nickname should be Mike "The Fort" Fontenot.
Posted by: Sean Fuentes | June 29, 2007 2:37 PM
I SAY WE CALL HIM OATMEAL SOMETHING U CAN RELY ON EVERY DAY!
Posted by: MIKE BROOKS | June 29, 2007 2:39 PM
Mike Don't Ya Know Fontenot is what I suggest. Being that he is a rookie and if you watch baseball or at least sportscenter you should know Fontenot.
Posted by: Joe Stroud | June 29, 2007 2:40 PM
How about calling him "the
Ragin' Cajun"?
Posted by: Tye Hartall | June 29, 2007 2:41 PM
I like Basco...but I think Fontenot looks like Calvin from Calvin and Hobbs. Not to mention Fontenot looks exactly like my cousin...whose name happens to be Calvin! lol
By no means is this game over...1 run here and a couple there..and we are back in business. Petrick will hold them right there!!
Posted by: Mitch Jensen | June 29, 2007 2:41 PM
He hops around the field in various positions with good defense and fabulous hitting, his name has French connotation, and frankly feels like a Frogger to me.
I've been calling him that everyday for weeks. I thought I was the only one who thought he should have a nickname :-)
Posted by: Jennifer | June 29, 2007 2:42 PM
i think that fontenots nickname should be the fontzs named after the fonz.
Posted by: andrew peters | June 29, 2007 2:43 PM

Posted by: Kyle | June 29, 2007 2:45 PM
Oh this is too easy....
How about "The Fontz"
Simple yet cool....Because for him having been thrown into the fire he seems so relaxed and calm in clutch situations...

Posted by: Bobbie L | June 29, 2007 3:00 PM
How about the Fonz
Or maybe even Fonzie
Posted by: PJ | June 29, 2007 3:04 PM
How about swish, the sound his bat makes as he strikes out when there are runners in scoring position.
Posted by: Bill | June 29, 2007 3:04 PM
I can not think of a name for Fontenot, but my girlfriend suggested the pronunciation of "the riot" for Ryan Theriot. Sounds like an eighties hair band's name - Ryan, "the riot" Theriot.
I am turning 30 today and watching the game, so hopefully they can chip away at this Brewer lead and get the streak to 7!
Posted by: kyle hagaman | June 29, 2007 3:06 PM
We sould name Prince Fielder to.How about Powerful Prince.
Posted by: Anonymous | June 29, 2007 3:11 PM
The only nickname that fits...LIL CAJUN DNAMITE!!! i wonder what all the sports experts who said he would never make it in the big league because he is too small think now. Dynamite comes in small packages.
Posted by: ANDREW JUNEAU | June 29, 2007 3:13 PM
A long time Cub fan, now from Ohio. I like the knickname "The Fountain". The hits just keep gushing out of Fontenot's bat!
We'll see you in Cincinati in July.

Small Font
Posted by: Jeremy | June 29, 2007 3:21 PM
lets call fontenot 'little giant' because he is so small and so far has been coming up big. by the way he reminds me and some friends of a david eckstein type of player....also can u explain why some players have bats that are hollow at the tip and others don't? thanks. sam acosta die hard cubs fan from texas
Posted by: sam acosta | June 29, 2007 3:21 PM
Fontenot is my favorite player ever since the first time I saw him play probably because I like the way he plays he is a good role model for us kids also since i'm 14 and kind of small it gives me hope to make it to the MLB, but anyway i've always called him Font but here's another one Little League or Toy Cannon
Posted by: Yanni | June 29, 2007 3:36 PM
He's from Slidell, LA so I think we should work with that, but I'm not coming up with much. The Slidell Flash, Cajun Stretch, Louisiana Bomber, The Homerin' Hurricane, Swamp Rat, Cattail Cracker, Helluvahitta Font, etc...
Posted by: Chet Gresham | June 29, 2007 3:37 PM
I think the Cubs have found "The Fontenot of Youth!" Go Cubs!!!!
Posted by: eros villaraza | June 29, 2007 3:39 PM
LSU's live tiger mascot is named "Mike." Fontenot could be called "Mike the Tiger" like we LSU fans refer to the Tiger. Also, "Le Tigre" or some variation could work.

The Hurricane!
Posted by: eros | June 29, 2007 3:41 PM
I'm watching the game here in Milwaukee and I believe Steve Cochran just inadvertently gave Fontenot a nickname, "Scrappy" what do you think?
Posted by: Nick Alexenko | June 29, 2007 3:42 PM
I posted previously posted CAJUN DYNAMITE. How about CAJUN DYNA-MIKE?
Posted by: ANDREW JUNEAU | June 29, 2007 3:42 PM
just call him BAD MF, cus thats what he is, Bad Mike Fontenot.
Posted by: Robb Prohaska | June 29, 2007 3:42 PM
Since Fontenot is a little on the shorter side, how about Little Big League? He's little but gets the job done.
GO CUBBIES!
Posted by: Alex | June 29, 2007 3:42 PM
How about Scrappy Doo like Scooby doo's little nephew.
Posted by: Woody | June 29, 2007 3:43 PM
I think his name should Be Iron Mike because he never seems to show any expression no matter what he does and hes just been so solid as of late
Posted by: Charlie J | June 29, 2007 3:45 PM
Long time cubs fan from Kansas. Go Cubbies! How about "Oh no, it's Fontenot!"
Posted by: Josh Bolt | June 29, 2007 3:46 PM
Fontenot is an LSU Tiger... from da Cajun Country of New Iberia...
I know this is MLB and not the SEC, but I think his nickname should be "Mike da Tigaaahh" cause he will rip your pitches to shreds...
Posted by: Bobby Stults | June 29, 2007 3:46 PM
Please anything but "Fondue." Being as Mike is family, I know he used to be called "Woodstock" when he was younger because he resembled the Peanuts character by that name. I personally like "Mighty Mike" as that was his nickname at LSU.
PS Mike is second cousin to Jerry Fontenot who was drafted by and played eight years for the Chicago Bears.

In keeping with his roots (and because the music moves me like his playing), why not ZYDECO Fontenot. From his new home, we could add CHI-Zyeco (or Chi-Zy). Catchy?

We think your new home run call should be "OH BABY!" after you said it when Aram won the game. It's really catchy and sounds perfect. It oculd really catch for cubs fans.

Mike's nickname should be "Dr. No." In no way does the opposing team want to face him at bat or in the field; what a terrific player - thanks Mike, Cub fans love players like you.
Posted by: Deb Higgins | June 29, 2007 9:33 PM
Hello Len and Bob,
I think Mike Fontenot should be nicknamed "Flick" for the way he just flicks the bat through the batters box and shoots the ball to all fields. It also embodies the type of player he his, a get on base and get on over scrappy player. I think "Flick" would work out well!
Thanks,
Matthew Barrett

Fonte is Italian for "Source"
btw, being 5'8" myself I know from experience that you have to play to your strengths, be intelligent out there and leave it all out on the field, court, whatever...

I already saw it on here but THE FONT is the best nickname for Fontenot. He's also scrappy so something with that in the name would also be good.

Him and Ryan Theriot up the middle together can be "The Riot and Mighty Mouse" which flows well and sounds like an Alternative rock band.
