Go Cubs Go
We visited this a few weeks ago, but continue to get questions. "Go Cubs Go" is the song played after a Cub victory at Wrigley. It was written and sung by the late, great Chicago folk legend Steve Goodman. Steve was a huge Cub fan and died far too young in 1984, so it's great his music is getting a boost this year. The lyrics are below and the songs is available on several of his albums.

Baseball season's underway
Well you better get ready for a brand new day.
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.
They're singing ...
Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.
Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.
They got the power, they got the speed
To be the best in the National League
Well this is the year and Cubs are real
So come on down to Wrigley Field
We're singing now ...
Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.
Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.
Baseball time is here again
You can catch it all on WGN
So stamp you feet and clap your hands
Chicago Cubs got the greatest fans.
You're singing now ...
Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.
Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.

Is that the same Steve Goodman referred to in the David Allan Coe classic, "You Don't Call Me By My Name"?

Good to see your post about "Go, Cubs, Go" and Steve Goodman. He often doesn't get his due. Thought you might be interested in an eight-year project of mine that has come to fruition -- an 800-page biography of Goodman published in May, "Steve Goodman: Facing the Music." Please check my Internet site below for more info. Just trying to spread the word. Feel free to do the same!

I host a daily radio show in Texas, titled, "Where Wall Street Meets Main Street", originating in Houston. I've been a member of the "Die Hard Cubs Fan Club" since 1956, and I'd LOVE to use the song, "Go Cubs Go" as my bumper music--even though I live in a city of Astro fans. Will you please email me and tell me how I can receive a copy of the single. You can stream my program LIVE, daily, at www.bizradio.com. Thanks for your help. Now back to the Cubs v. D'backs game on WGN-TV!

Great Going Bob,
But while you're at it, why don't you print the words to "Men In Blue" also from 1984?
I think that one applies too, don't you?

I can't believe there's many Cubs fans out there only just discovering this song. I mean, come on it's been around forever. Bandwagon fans...

Great song by the late Steve Goodman, which by coincidence, that his last name is Goodman, and you have the Goodman Theatre in Chicago. But don't forget about A Dying Cubs Fan's Last Request, that is also another Steve Goodman song that he recorded live by himself on guitar only, in concert, about his beloved Cubbies.

Also - if anyone is interested, the song is available on iTunes (or at least was several years ago during the 2003 run).

I agree with the poster that spoke of the bandwagon Cub fans just discovering this song. This has been a favorite of mine since my father played it for me on his record player. The flip side of the record was "Men in Blue." The 2003-Era fans just don't match up to those of us that have been true, blue Cub fans for many years.

"Go Cubs Go" is on Red Pajama Records CD: No Big Surprise: The Steve Goodman Anthology
Also has "Take Me OutTo The Ballgame" You must check out Steve Goodman. Search You Tube also. There were some great videos of Steve on the rooftop.

You can download any or all of Steve's songs for $.99 cents/song on iTunes. Go to the iTunes website and do a search on "Steve Goodman Anthology". I downloaded "Go Cubs Go" and "A Dying Cub Fan's Last Request"...it's cheap and easy...then I burned it to a CD! Have fun!!

Just an FYI…
Listen closely to the original song...the words in the 3rd verse leading to the chorus are: “Hear them singing now”…not “You’re singing now”.

Dear Len and Bob:
I wrote a song called Babe Ruth's Curse which was in the HBO film the Curse of the Bambino. The next year the Red Sox broke the Curse. The next year I wrote a song about Buck Weaver and the Chicago Black Sox..within a year the White Sox won! This year I wrote a song called Our Cubbie Curse which is one of the songs in my CD Baseball Songs Sports Heroes. Every time I write a song about a team and their curse the team wins!!! Will the Cubs win it all this year? Let's wait..scroll down please!
OUR CUBBIE CURSE
THE BILLY GOAT SQUABBLE WAS IN FORTYFIVE
LONG BEFORE OUR CUBBIE CURSE DID THRIVE
WRIGLEY FIELD’S ON A BURIAL GROUND
STRANGE THINGS ABOUND
WE LOVE WRIGLEY FIELD HALF AS MUCH AS LIFE ITSELF
BUT CUBBIE FANS WRIGLEY’S KILLING OUR HEALTH
NO SERIES WON ON THIS CURSED FIELD
GO TO THE PLACE WHERE WE’LL BE HEALED
CHORUS
WHAT IS THE TRUE STORY OF OUR CUBBIE CURSE?
IT’S NOT MURPHY THE GOAT. IT’S SO MUCH WORSE
OUR CUBS CAN’T WIN ‘TIL WE FACE THE TRUTH
THE CURSE IS WHERE THE SHOT WAS CALLED BY RUTH
TWO SERIES WON AT THE OLD WESTSIDE GROUNDS
NOW, A MEDICAL CENTER WHERE DOCS MAKE ROUNDS
SEND IN DOC’S! MOVE THE MED CENTER IN!
WRIGLEY AND ITS’ IVY ARE POISON
REBUILD THE OLD BALL PARK ON THE WESTSIDE
RESTORE OUR WINNING WAYS AND OUR PRIDE
CUBBIES LEAVE THE BASEBALL’S BEST PARK
DON’T BE LOVABLE LOSERS LEAVE THE DARK!
REPEAT CHORUS TWICE
FADE OUT
IT’S OUR CUBBIE CURSE
YAH, OUR CUBBIE CURSE
WE CAN’T WIN ‘TILL WE FACE THE TRUTH
OURCUBBIE CURSE
NOT MURPHY THE GOAT!
IT’S THE CUBBIE CURSE

If you can get WGN radio in (720 am), you'll hear this song before every game. Not to mention the whole crowd singing it after a home game this year, but of course the last home game is over.

GO CUBBIES...I've been a Cubs fan since 1984. I'm from Houston..I love my Stros, but I have alot of heart for th Cubbies. My mom and I have been following the Cubs since then. We would sing "Take me out to the ballgame" when Harry would take it in the 7th inning. I visited Chicago in 2001 and went to a Cubs game. I had the best time of my life with the fans. Chicago is like a second city for me and I love it always....LETS GO CUBS!!!!!!

I have a the official Cubs Party Album in cassette form but am wanting to know if it is also on a CD? Besides GO CUBS GO, it has other good numbers including MEN IN BLUE sung by the Cub Choir of Jody Davis, Leon Durham, Keith Moreland, Gary Woods and Rick Sutcliff and TAKE ME OUT TO THE BALLGAME sung by the one and only HARRY CAREY. Anyone know of it as a CD?

Are you kidding me? You mean I'm the only one who realizes how incredibly awful that song is? Steve Goodman wrote a lot of great music, this isn't an example of such.
Go Cubs, go get something else to play after home wins.
Keep up the good work guys. Bob, you had a lot of work to do filling Steve Stone's shoes, and you've done a fantastic job. I love the broadcasts.

Huge Cubs fan, always heard the song at the end of a Cubs veswah! I just didn't know there is a song that the loyal Cubs fan sings at the end of the game. Glad that I found it, GOSH I miss Harry Carey and Steve Stone. This is the year 100 years and it is time that we go out and claim what belongs to US!
