Victory Music
We have been getting a ton of e-mails and inquiries about the music played at Wrigley Field in celebration of a Cubs victory. The tune is "Go Cubs Go" by legendary Chicago folk singer Steve Goodman. Steve died far too young in 1984 without seeing the Cubs win the division that year, but his songs live on. He has some other great Cub songs I would recommend you try out including "A Dying Cub Fan's Last Request" and "When The Cubs Go Marching In." Steve also wrote "The City of New Orleans" which was the last song Jimmy Buffett played during his concerts at Wrigley Field in honor of his friend Steve who introduced him to Cubs baseball and Wrigley Field.

I always loved this song! And it's soooooo nice to hear it alot lately:) !!!! Go Cubbies Go! Ah yes,Steve Goodman was truly a great Chicago music legend and die hard Cub fan! I am sure he's swapping stories with Harry and Jack upstair. I am glad to know who composed this song. Thanks.I moved out of Chicago 3 years ago....Happy 4th B & L

Anyone who wants to hear the song in its entirety can click on my name above, "Carrie C." which will take you to my Myspace page. About halfway down the page on the left-hand side is a purple box with a bunch of songs in it. That song is near the top of the list -- click on it, and enjoy!
I LOVE that they're using it this year, it's always been my favorite of all the Cubs songs.
Go Cubs Go,
Go Cubs Go,
Hey Chicago, whaddya say,
The Cubs are gonna win today!

Are these songs by Goodman for sale anywhere? I haven't seen them in any of the various Cub online shops.
Thanks!
P.S. Brenly - Cincy? You did say there was a favorite pizza place there... should we be worried?

Question........
Here's the setup, Cubs have a man on third base, the batter gets a walk, the pitcher has the ball standing on the pitchers mound watching the runner go to first base. As the runner going toward first picks up his speed rounds first and heads for second base. The runner on third base heads for home as the the runner heads for second after touching first base. Pitcher throws to second base runner on third base scores, while the runner trying for second is called out, making a first or second out....Can this happen, read it a book where it had happen back in the day.........what do you think..................

Steve's song is one of the things that is uniquely Wrigley. It always gives me a lump in my throat as it is played because he was such a fan and didn't see a championship. Reminds me of all the other fans who have passed who would have loved to see the Cubs win it all. I'll throw in another uniquely Wrigley man - Wayne Messmer. Folks see him sing the national anthem many times on WGN... but how many know of his throat surgery after saving a person from a robbery (I think I have that right). His strong voice came back. Visitors may not know why we have a tear in our eye as we are proud at the beginning of games (Wayne) and at the end (Steve). It's a Cub thing.

Here's the lyrics Debbie....to listen to it, you can find it on my Myspace page -- click my name, find the purple box down on the lefthand side, click on it at the top of the list and enjoy!
GO, CUBS, GO (written/performed by Steve Goodman)
Baseball season's underway
Well you better get ready for a brand new day.
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.
They're singing ...
Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.
Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.
They got the power, they got the speed
To be the best in the National League
Well this is the year and Cubs are real
So come on down to Wrigley Field
We're singing now ...
Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.
Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.
Baseball time is here again
You can catch it all on WGN
So stamp you feet and clap your hands
Chicago Cubs got the greatest fans.
You're singing now ...
Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.
Go, Cubs, go
Go, Cubs, go
Hey, Chicago, what do you say
The Cubs are gonna win today.

The Steve Goodman Anthology is available in parts on Itunes. It is a must, but if you are only gonna grab a couple tracks (aside from dying Cub fans last request and Go Cubs Go), I'd heartily recommend Lincoln Park Pirates to those on the north side who have fallen prey to the Lincoln Park towing company!!

Go Cubs Go is my myspace song, too. It gives me goose bumps and I am glad I got to hear it at Wrigley a few weeks ago after watcihng the Cubs beat Seattle. There's only one catch to the lyrics...You can't catch it all on WGN any more, which is isn't right nor fair to people across the country who love the Cubs, like my sister in Oregon. WGN doesn't even carry half the games anymore!!!

The Song and Steve have inspired me for years. I did a presentation and speech about his "Dying Cub Fans Last Request" in high school. They entered me in speech competitions because of it. Now I have written my own Cubbie Song, "Wrigley In October." I hope you all like it. Rock On Cubs!!!
