Vin Returns To Wrigley

It's great to see legendary Hall of Fame broadcaster Vin Scully here at Wrigley Field today. Scully doesn't travel much with the team any more, but he's made the trip to one of his favorite ballparks for this four-game series. Vin is truly the voice of baseball in America and his tribute to Wrigley before Game 1 of the 1989 National League Championship Series is truly brilliant:

She stands alone on the corner of Clark and Addison, this dowager queen, dressed in basic black and pearls, seventy-five years old, proud head held high and not a hair out of place, awaiting yet another date with destiny, another time for Mr. Right.

She dreams as old ladies will of men gone long ago. Joe Tinker. Johnny Evers. Frank Chance. And of those of recent vintage like her man Ernie. And the Lion (Leo Durocher). And Sweet Billy Williams.

And she thinks wistfully of what might have been (shots of the 1984 playoffs on the screen), and the pain is still fresh and new, and her eyes fill, her lips tremble, and she shakes her head ever so slightly. And then she sighs, pulls her shawl tightly around her frail shoulders, and thinks - this time, this time it will be better.

Welcome back Vin!

As a lifelong Dodger fan I realize every year more than the last just how lucky I am to have been able to listen to this man for as long as I can remember. He is part of the soundtrack of my life and I couldn't be more proud of it.

Vin Scully is pure class, and one of the best announcers baseball has seen or will ever see. Pure class.

So eloquent and touching, that tribute by Vin still brings tears to my eyes.
