Pen Pals

There has been a lot of discussion about the Cubs bullpen - that's not necessarily a bad thing because the team has been playing so well it's about the only point to pick on. I know Lou Piniella wants to avoid burning those guys out and the Cubs run of extra inning games this month has really put the pressure on the pen.

For Bob Howry, it's a matter of command. He is just not putting his pitches where he wants them which is not like him. I think Lou will look for the right spot to get him an inning or two, hopefully in a Cubs blowout win today, so he can work his way out of his troubles.

One note about this ballpark. It's too early to tell for sure, but after walkoff homer the other night, I won't be surprised if the ball jumps out of here every day after the weather warms up here. They say the park has played fair so far, but I'll be watching closely come June and July to see if that holds up.

No doubt about it, when the weather warms up there will be more home runs. I was worried about the bullpen but they have each been giving seven innings and not doing a bad job. I just want to get Soriano back in the mix as soon as possible.

I believe in my opinion that when Soriano comes back he should go back to left field and DeRosa should go back to second base so we can FINALLY get that World Series ring.

Not only is Howry missing his spots, but I've heard his velocity is down. I remember that he was sruggling early last year too, but ended up really, really good. Can't remember when he busted out of it last year, but I have a feeling he'll come around w/ the weather. I expect him to be there by the end of May. He also seems to be better the more work he gets. I'm pretty sure Howry will be just fine.

Excellent job guys. I really enjoy your broadcasts. You work well together keep it up.

I LOVE YOU AND LEN AND I WATCH EVERY GAME. I WOULD LIKE TO KNOW IF FUKUDOME IS LEARNING ENGLISH. GO CUBS!!!

Bob, I agree with the above notes of praise on your work and that of your colleague. I'm glad youse guys (Mississippi River language.. lol) are there.

As for Howry and the pitching core in general, I am feeling a bit frustrated that the weaknesses of last season have continued, namely unreliable work from Lilly, Marquis, and especially Hill. Would Ted Lilly be better as a middle reliever? Can we find at least one other legitimate starting pitcher to add to the rotation? And can we settle on one effective closer on whom the team can rely to finish out a game, at least most of the time? I miss the days of Joe Borowski, or even Dempster at his best in that role. The team is so strong offensively and defensively; it's a shame when the pitching is so inconsistent.
