Is Jim Dandy?

Looks like Jim Edmonds is going to be a Chicago Cub. He's in town to
take a physical today and if he passes, we could see him in CF in a
Cubs uniform. Thoughts on this pending move? My take--low risk, high
reward. It won't cost the Cubs more than the prorated minimum. If it
doesn't work out, you can cut bait and move on quickly. But it has
the potential of being a worthwhile acquisition to help the Cubs from
the left side of the plate. Edmonds might not be the same player he
once was, but he still can have value. Maybe his early season
struggles were the result of just not being back all the way yet from
the calf injury. Plus, his experience could be a nice asset. My
guess is, the biggest problem some Cubs fans will have with him is
that he was a Cardinal.

the cubs will embrace edmonds just like they have for fukodome, johnson and soto. can't wait until we play those pesky birds.

hey ken, let bob ask a few questions to the seventh inning guest.. seems like the guest only makes eye contact with you. ha ha

keep up the good work and GO CUBS!!

Could be the next excard whose career we salvaged since Harry Caray.

Are you kidding me? Edmonds has not lost a step, he has lost 10. Can get the same offense from Pie and 10 times better defense. If the Padres cut you, you are not good. Please do not sign this 60 year old man

It's a point of worry for me. I feel Johnson has earned the starting role in center field, and bring in Edmonds will cause more drama then he is worth. But I guess time will tell.

pie needs to play everday at AAA. Edmonds will bring a solid lefty veteran in... lets see how big z treats him!

I can't believe how many people are against the Edmonds deal. Isn't it only costing the Cubs $289,000? Seems silly not to do it. I'm excited to see how it pans out, Jimmy's had some pretty good times at Wrigley. Like you said, low risk - high reward. :)

Whats Next........

Steve Garvey as hitting coach.

Eric Show as pitching coach.

Mark McGwire as strength and conditioning coach.

Jerry Dybsynksi as baserunning coach.

The opposing teams broadcaster will sing the 7th inning stretch- oh wait, they already do that.

Believe it or not, I'm with Jen and Brad G...and even Loquacious Lenny. I actually like the Edmonds deal. Unlike last year's fiasco acquisitions of Money Monroe, Trash-all and Kendall, we did not have to give up any prospects for Edmonds.

Brad G is correct too. Felix Pie needs to get more ABs and stolen base opportunities at AAA Iowa. Sitting him on the bench is a terrible waste of young talent and another reason why I didn't want to get a well-past-it manager who pays little attention to the Cubs minor league system. I would also dispatch Cubs' baserunning guru Bob Dernier to work on Felix' baserunning. He has the possibility of becoming a very dangerous baserunner, since he possesses great speed.

If Edmonds is a bust, our generous GM can release the guy and get on the horn to recall Felix. If he's just OK, they can recall Felix on Sept 1 when the roster expands anyways. Edmonds also could provide that power bat from the left side that we've been lacking for awhile. Again, it won't cost us much either.

So for once, I must agree with Loser Lou Pinata and our generous GM much as it pains me to admit it. Thumbs up on this one. It's about time those 2 clowns got something right. Now if we can only get them to realize that carrying 12 pitchers is silly, since it leaves our bench a little thin. Fat chance of sanity with our brilliant manager though, eh?

And finally, while we're talking about hiring people who're past their prime how about WGN putting Phil Donohue back on the tube? What a nutty decision to put that fruitcake lefty on the air! Hey, I hear Chicago's own Reverend Wrong has retired. Maybe WGN can hire him too.

haha..nice one brad.. just watched the '84 garvey game 4 on espn classic and it made me sick all over again.. a part of me was really hoping that they'd change the film to where lee smith plunked that little bastard in the head in the 10th instead of serving up the homerun... 2nd most I've ever been disappointed as a cubs fan (nothing tops '03 disaster). I have to agree with len here, I despised edmonds for years with the cardinals and there will always be a part of me that won't like him because of that, I feel the same way about marquis especially when he serves up a homerun BUT for the price that your paying for him, they would be crazy not to sign him to see how things go, if he goes through an 0-20 streak, they can just re-release him no big deal... Pie is definately faster than edmonds, christ I'm probably faster than him now but he was a gold glover and even though he lost some speed, he see's the ball off the bat better than almost anyone and that can make up somewhat for the lack of legs. I also agree that reed has done more than expected of him so far this season and he has sort of earned an everyday role with the club and if reed batted lefty I'm sure they wouldn't have signed edmonds but with ward injured again and pie still struggling to be more consistent, at the very least edmonds is a good left-handed bat to come of the bench late in the game. What I'm really excited about is with ward almost certainly to go on the DL, seeing Micah Hoffpauir getting a shot in the big leagues. I have a feeling that this kid is going to be something very special someday and I hope he makes the most of his trip up to the big leagues. One last thing, I'm a true cubs fan through and through and I rant and b*tch and whine at times when I'm frustrated with how things are going but I've got to hand it to Dempster, you have definately proved me wrong. I thought he'd make about 5-6 starts in the rotation and go back to the pen with a 6+ ERA but he's been truly remarkable so far. Lilly is starting to come around so it's good to see the cubs are getting 3 pretty consistent starters out of their rotation. Good job dempster, I will now take "dumpster" out of my vocabulary for the rest of the season (unless it's absolutely necessary). It's been a good home-stand so far and hopefully it will continue with a sweep of the bucs.

Brad,

If Eric Show's ghost reports to Wrigley Field to be the pitching coach, I will owe you a beer.

Wish you could have been here to watch the St. Louis 5pm news. Distraught Cards fans crying about Edmonds being a Cub, even more distraught over "Izzy" choking away another save. It was just a magical day for St. Louis sports fans!

lets get those red birds next time sweep them.
