Talk of the Times

Great to be home, if even for 3 days, as the Cubs host the Braves before going back to the road. We're looking forward to our throwback telecast on Thursday during which we will honor our heritage as the TV voice of the Cubs since 1948. Since I wasn't around in 1948 (neither were blogs for that matter), I'm always looking for some tips on phrases that might have been used then and the like. For those of you old enough enough to remember, or for the historians who know 1948 so well, I'd love to hear any thoughts on some things we can blend into the broadcast.

Is Bob's memory slipping? Wasn't he a rookie in 1948? :-) Enjoying the telecast in sunny San Diego...

Visit this website for a great summary of many baseball notes for 1948 including Babe Ruth's death that year.

Here's another great link that is not sports related.....interesting stuff. Looks like the bikini gained popularity in 1948----is Len still looking for something to wear??

Hey guys, love the blog, and podcast and watching you guys on MLB.tv (I never miss a game even though I am 8 hours ahead of you there in Chi). The Marine Corps is currently paying me to live in Tallinn, Estonia. I am a huge Cubs fan. I have a request though. There is a Cubs fan that is here in Tallinn, Jim Maronek, on vacation and got very sick and is currently in the hospital here. I print off all the Cubs news and take it to him as well as I download your podcast to my ipod and take it to the hospital for Jim to listen to. You wouldn't believe the smile on his face (That could be because of the way we are playing right now, or it could just be you guys voices) Either way it would be great if you could give him a shout out on your next podcast as well as ask the fellow Cubs fans to keep him in their prayers. Thanks,

I've been looking into the clothing genre of this era and I think we females will once again get the short end of the stick. You guys get to rock out in fedoras and zoot suits while potato sack dresses were all the rage for us. Where does one even buy a potato sack?

Can't wait to see the blast from the past on Thursday as we...dare I say, go for the sweep?!!

i liked the 1948 broadcast and i think that the cubs should do more games in throwback... it was a great broadcast. reed johnson has really shown me what hes made of, i think you should start calling him R.J. he needs a nickname... and deserves it. Go Cubs!
