You Had Questions, I Have Answers - Part II

Len, Thanks for taking the questions. I think it is great you guys have made yourselves so available to the fans. 1) What team did you root for growing up and do you still follow them more closely than most of the other teams? 2) What kind of memorablia collection do you have? I figure you might have a pretty decent one.

Posted by arkansascub at February 3, 2006 10:57 PM

LEN: Arkansascub, nice to have you join us on the blog. 1) I grew up a Detroit Tigers fan. I have to say I don't really follow the Tigers any more closely than any other club. The Cubs are my team now. It
will be cool though to have the Tigers come to Wrigley in interleague play. 2) I have a few things in my house but not too much. A few balls and jerseys.
---

I have two questions. Do you still visit the Cubs.com board? (Believe me, I don't blame you if you gave up on it; that place is a loony bin breeding ground for paranoia.) Also, d'ya think we're bound to hear stories of violence breaking out among fans when the Cubs and Sox match up this year? There's always a few isolated incidents, even when neither team has anything to brag about. We so crazy. Thanks ever so much, Mr. Len.

Posted by Renee at February 4, 2006 02:01 AM

LEN: Renee, I have visited the cubs.com board occasionally over the off-season. I hope things don't get too testy this year in the crosstown series. It's a rather intense rivalry to say the least.
---

Hi Len, glad to hear from you again. Can't believe spring training is around the corner. Cant' wait. I have been wondering, why did the Cubs trade Nomar?? That was the stupidest thing they did. Nomar did
great last season, yes he got hurt, but there was no sense of trading him. He did good and also why do the cubs want to trade off some of their good players?? I have been very upset by that cause there was no sense of trading Nomar. How many times has Kerry Wood got hurt and the Cubs kept him?? They could've kept Nomar. So that's why my number one team is the Cards. I am still a Cubs fan, but since they done this I am very upset by it.

Posted by Dana at February 4, 2006 04:52 PM

LEN: Dana, Nomar wasn't traded. He was a free agent. I think the bottom line was, he wasn't viewed as an everyday SS and there wasn't another place on the infield for him to play. And instead of paying him a lot of $ to play LF, the Cubs felt more comfortable giving Matt Murton a chance. I like Nomar a lot and I wish him well. It was just a baseball decision, that's all.
---

Hi Len -

Any word on whether Adam Greenberg will be spending any time at the AAA or MLB level this season?

I remember seeing a few stories after he was hit against Florida - did he come back well at the end of the year in the minors - or even play?

Brian

Posted by Brian at February 5, 2006 08:22 PM

LEN: Brian, Greenberg did return to action in the minors last year. He isn't a top prospect, but could get a big league call-up if there's an injury mid-season.

You Had Questions, I Have Answers - Part I

Thanks for all the great questions/comments...I'll do my best to address what's on your mind these days...

If Felix Pie gets a mid season call-up do you think it is likely he will play right field in place of Jones? I can't imagine benching Pierre.

Posted by Jon Heupel at February 1, 2006 12:56 PM

LEN: Jon, to be honest, that's looking too far ahead for me. My assumption would be that if Pie gets called up mid-season, it's because of an injury or somebody really struggling. I'll root simply for a September call-up for Pie in '06. He'll be an everyday big leaguer soon enough, just hopefully not yet.
---

Dusty got a lot of criticism for platooning Hollandsworth and Dubois last year. Dusty said at the Cubs convention he didn't think he was going to platoon Jacque Jones this year even though against righties he has put up quality numbers while hitting around .210 against lefties. Do you expect Jones to be the everyday right fielder or will Dusty see the light :) and platoon him?

Posted by Jon Heupel at February 1, 2006 12:59 PM

LEN: Jon, my hunch is that Jones will play pretty much every day.
---

Len,

What advice would you give to someone who desperately wants to get to sports broadcasting who is a very sports oriented, asian, female and "Older" than the kind of eye candy you usually see on air. Thanks.

Posted by Sylvia at February 1, 2006 01:07 PM

LEN: Hi Sylvia, my advice for anyone looking to break into the business would be to take an entry-level position with a radio or TV station doing just about anything just to get your foot in the door. Learn the ropes, make contacts and move up in time. It's like
everything else--it requires hard work, patience, persistence and the realization that you may never make much money doing it. It's a tough business because a lot of people want to do it, but nothing
beats talking sports for a living. I wish you luck!
---

What do you think about Matt Murton. What do you think his stats will be this season? Here is mine, you will be suprised:

34 hr 104 rbi .283 ba

That is what the Cubbies will need to make it to the post season, along with staying healthy.

Posted by Eric Schumann at February 1, 2006 01:58 PM

LEN: Hey Eric, I'll take those numbers from Murton for sure!
---

Will they be still be showing the Cubs games locally and nationally (as usual) on WGN TV since the merger of the WB and the UPN ?.......or will that have an effect on it?

Posted by Linda P at February 1, 2006 02:20 PM

LEN: Linda, it will be business as usual for us on WGN this year. In fact, there should be a TV schedule available soon.
---

Hey Len,
It's so great to hear from you again.
This is not baseball related, but how did you hear about the Redwalls? About the time I started listening to their music, I would hear you mention them in Cubs broadcasts. Also, what was it like to have them sing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" last season? Could you invite them back? :) Thanks for taking our questions!

Posted by Lauren at February 1, 2006 02:20 PM

LEN: Lauren, I read about the Redwalls in the Trib last year and had a couple people tell me they thought I'd dig them. I have to say I was blown away by De Nova the first time I heard it. We then had them in the booth late in the year and they were great. Then I saw them live @ Metro in October. I think they're incredibly talented and I'm really rooting for them.
---

Hey Len,
A lot of people have been down on the outfield for this coming year power-wise, with Murton, Jones, and Pierre now covering an outfield where years ago we had one guy hitting 60. Its an over asked question
but, I was wondering what your take on the new outfield is? Personally I love it, from day one I liked what Matt Murton brought to the team with his hitting for higher average and I believe we will
cover right-center like a blanket with Pierre and Jones, as well as, getting a great leadoff man and lower order guy.

Posted by Kevin at February 1, 2006 02:21 PM

LEN: Kevin, I like Murton a lot and while he'll probably have some struggles at times this year, I think he's going to be good and help stabilize LF. Pierre is an elite leadoff hitter, something the Cubs
didn't have last year. Jones is very similar to Jeromy Burnitz, so I think you can expect that position to be about the same. So, overall, I think the OF has the potential to be better than it was
last year.
---

Len!

With all the off-season moves the Cubs made this year, what would you say is the biggest difference we will see in the 2006 Cubs (from the 2005 Cubs), and how do you think that will impact the upcoming season?

Posted by AnnaBednarczyk at February 1, 2006 02:48 PM

LEN: Anna, I think the biggest difference is an impact leadoff hitter. Pierre brings speed and a small-ball attitude to the equation, something the Cubs have lacked. The other thing is, having some veterans in the pen will help a lot.
---

Hey, Len,
It was nice seeing you at the cubs convention. DURING THE WGN seminar I was the one who asked if you guys could show cubs games on during the winter. Well my question to you is what college did you go to? And is it a good college for brodcasting?
thank you
jeff

Posted by jeff berta at February 1, 2006 03:24 PM

LEN: Yes Jeff, I remember the question, nice to hear from you again. I attended Marquette University in Milwaukee. I actually majored in public relations, but MU does have a good broadcasting program. I
did Marquette basketball games on the student radio station when I was there and that really helped me gain some valuable experience.
---

Hey Len,

I was just wondering if the Cubs last names will be on home uniforms this year? I saw them on when they were introducing players, or was that just so everyone knew who they were? I really hope the names will be on, because that looked retarded last year.

Posted by Mike at February 1, 2006 04:11 PM

LEN: Mike, I believe the home jerseys will remain "nameless" (I haven't asked anyone, but I've heard nothing to indicate otherwise). I think in the case of the new players, they just put the names on
the back because it better identifies them for the cameras. I actually like the no names on the home jerseys. Has a classic look to it.
---

Hey Len,
What I want to know is this....... will we see Angel Guzman???? EVER??????? Major League scouts have said HE has better STUFF than Wood, Prior, or Zambrano. I've been waiting for THREE years. I know he was hurt, but he's healthy NOW. Will he be in the five man
rotation???

Posted by Lenny C at February 1, 2006 04:11 PM

LEN: Lenny (great name!), you said it, it's all about his arm. Until Guzman can prove he's healthy, it's gonna be tough to justify a big league call-up. I do think we will see him at some point, but remember, he missed almost all of last year, so it's still one of
those things where you need to see him healthy for a long stretch before you really consider him a guy who can help you.
---

Hi Len,
I would really like to be a sports broadcaster and I was wondering what I should to to get into this field?
I was also wondering what you think about Jacque Jones being a Cub and what kind of numbers do you think he will put up in the 2006 season? Thanks so much,
Sarah xxx

Posted by Sarah Barshop at February 1, 2006 06:47 PM

LEN: Sarah, on your first question, please refer to a previous answer about breaking into broadcasting. On Jones, again, I think his numbers will be similar to what Jeromy Burnitz provided last year. Defensively, they're both very good as well. I think it's a wash.
---

Len

Do you feel, like I do, that the Cubs have an excellent chance to win the division this year? They finally have a lead-off hitter and made some much needed additions to the bullpen. As long as the starters stay healthy (and that has been a big if in the past years) it seems that they have a great chance to win the division and maybe more. Although the offseason is not completely over, teams like Houston and St. Louis have seemed to take a few steps back to the rest of the division. Thanks for your thoughts.

Posted by Matt H at February 1, 2006 06:53 PM

LEN: Matt, I think St. Louis is still the team to beat in the division, but you hope the Cardinals come back to the pack a bit. I think the Astros' chances depend somewhat on what Roger Clemens wants to do. On the Cubs, I think on paper, they've improved on defense,
at the top of the lineup and in the bullpen. I don't think you can say on paper that offensively this team will be worse than last year. The health of Wood and Prior is huge. But, if everything falls into place, there's no question this team could be playoff-worthy.
---

I know you are not Dusty Baker, but as the Cubs head to spring training, what do you think the Cubs' everyday lineup should be from 1 through 8?

Secondly, what do you think about what the rotation will look like as guys like Kerry Wood and Wade Miller return from their injuries? What will be the order in the rotation? How will their returns affect the number of starts for a Glendon Rusch or a Jerome Williams?

And lastly, we know when Ryan Dempster will come in, but where do you see the rest of the bullpen come in to the game? In what situations will we see Scott Eyre, Bobby Howry, Will Ohman, et al come into the
game?

Posted by Qumar Zaman at February 1, 2006 09:17 PM

LEN: Hey Qumar, if I were making out the lineup, I'd do something like this: Pierre/Walker or Hairston/Lee/Ramirez/Barrett/Jones/Murton/Cedeno. I'd also occasionally use Murton in the #2 spot. I think he's well-suited for hitting 2nd.

On the injured starters, it's usually unnecessary to figure out a rotation too far in advance because weird things tend to happen during a baseball season. By the time those guys are ready, who knows what the rest of the rotation will look like. Having a surplus of starters is ALWAYS a good thing. It's never a bad problem.

Howry and Eyre are the 8th inning guys. You might see one or the other in the 7th depending on matchups. Ohman gives Dusty a nice second LH option. Ohman might come in and face one lefty and then you can use Eyre for a full inning later. Again, nothing like having lots of options.
---

Len-
Thanks for taking questions. I've got a few for you.

What do you think of the team's youngsters? Murton and Cedeno have put up some impressive numbers, but a lot of people outside of the organization are downplaying them. I kind of wondered what you think of them.

How 'bout the Cubs starting rotation? What do you expect of them? Do you expect to see Rich Hill or Angel Guzman in the mix any time soon, or is this just too competitive of a year for them to realistically
expect to make the team?

How do you think the Cubs' outfield defense is going to compare to years past? I know pundits and ESPN talking heads weren't big on Hollandsworth or Burnitz, or even Patterson, but personally thought they made up a solid defensive outfield. I'm that Pierre's arm is not going to compare to Patterson's, but how about covering ground? What is Jacque Jones' defense really like? It seemed like Murton was really getting better in left as the season went on, does that seem to be a valid judgment in your estimation?

Finally, do you think Derrek Lee can maintain his stroke from last year? I really feel like his swing was great, and his numbers were a product of that great swing. I also feel it would be unfair to expect
him to hit .335 again, but is .300 asking too much?

Thanks for your time, Len. I hope your offseason has gone great, but I hope your looking forward to spring training and the WBC almost as much as I am (I'm anticipating it just a little too feverishly).

Posted by Charlie M. at February 1, 2006 10:35 PM

LEN: Charlie, here we go...1) I like both youngsters a lot. Murton has a great patient approach, he'll go the other way, and his power (I believe) will come. Cedeno can really pick it and has gotten a lot better with the bat the last couple years. 2) The hope going in is that Hill and Guzman won't be needed early on. One or both could contribute later in the year, but hopefully the rotation will be stocked. 3) I addressed the OF situation a bit earlier. Defensively, Murton has room for improvement. Pierre will run 'em
down, but has a short arm. The smaller gaps @ Wrigley will help him. I'm told Jones is a terrific defender with good range. Burnitz is a very good RF, so my guess would be they're in the same ballpark, although Jones is younger, therefore might have better range. 4) I think asking Derrek to replicate last year's numbers is unfair, but you raise an interesting question--is Derrek now a perennial .300 hitter or the .270-ish hitter he was prior to 2005? My gut feeling is he should be in the .290-.310 range. After what he did last year, I would be surprised to see Derrek below about .290 from here on out. I think he's at another level now.
---

Hey Len!
I met you by the bowl of onions at the Cubs Convention when you were leaving Saturday night...I don't know if you remember that, but it was pretty amusing. I was just wondering who you predict will get the starting job at 2B? Also, do you think Walker will remain a Cub for the 2006 season? Thanks a lot for answering questions Len, it's very awesome of you!

Posted by Mallory at February 1, 2006 10:41 PM

LEN: Mallory, please pass the onions! I think Jerry Hairston is an intriguing guy @ 2B. He said recently he wasn't totally healthy last year after ankle surgery and remember, he never really got settled in
at one spot defensively. He's known as a very good defensive 2B and I like the idea of him maybe hitting 2nd behind Juan Pierre. Neifi, to me, is a terrific utility infielder but not a guy I'd want to see
play 145 games if you have other options. I say that because he doesn't get on base enough. He is, however, outstanding defensively. Walker is a very good hitter who does get on base but it's no secret defense is not his strong suit. It should be an
intriguing spring training battle. Will Walker be here? Not sure, you need to ask Jim Hendry that one.
---

Hey Len... About the R&L field situations, How about if Jones and Murton platoon and Pie plays the other outfield position..... Your opinion?

Posted by Tim H at February 1, 2006 11:10 PM

LEN: Hi Tim, that's not the plan going into the season. On Pie, I think he might still need another full year in the minors. You'd just hate to rush a kid when that could hurt his development.
---

Hey Len, what are the odds Augie Ojeda gets any playing time? I remember a few years back he went through a stretch where he couldn't get a hit to save his life and was traded or let go soon after. I know he's not as talented as some of the other players on the team, but I loved his effort and attitude. And his name.

Posted by Tyler at February 2, 2006 01:13 AM

LEN: Hi Tyler, he does have a great name! He's a long shot to make the club, but defensively, he's really good, so you never know. If Todd Walker gets traded, that would open up a spot on the bench potentially for Augie.
---
First, to Mike ... I hated the names on the jerseys and am glad they're gone, at least at home.

Len, who do you see hitting 2nd? Murton?

How much production from the bottom of the order?

Did we improve the 'pen or just add names?

I second the question about Guzman. Time for him to quit being injured and start producing.

Can D Lee come close to his 2005?

Who's someone going to step up as the 4th/5th starter? (4th until Wood is back, 5th after that)

Posted by Brian at February 2, 2006 02:22 AM

LEN: Hi Brian, 1) I am intrigued by Murton hitting second, yes. 2)I am a little concerned about the bottom of the order on days Blanco catches, but if Cedeno and Murton are consistent and you get good
pitching, they should be fine. 3) Yes, the bullpen is better, no question. 4) Easier said than done for a guy to "quit being injured." Many times, it just happens. Unfortunately, injuries are a part of the game. 5) I think D Lee showed that he can be, if not
a .300 hitter every year, a guy who should be closer to that than to the guy who used to hit .265-.270. 46 HRs might be too much to ask, but 35-40? Very realistic. 6) Glendon Rush and Jerome Williams give
the Cubs good depth in the rotation.

Do you and Bob feel any pressure to rebound this year after the WGN ratings took a freefall last year? (You didn't think all your questions would be softballs, did you?)

Posted by Tommy at February 2, 2006 07:31 AM

LEN: Hi Tommy, no, I expected them to be all "baseballs." OK, it's been a long off-season I know...I need to work on my corny humor. On your main question, ratings aside, I felt really good about our first year in the booth. Bob is such a pro and is as knowledgeable and witty as anyone I've been around and just made my first year so enjoyable. We have an awesome crew who brought us in with open arms. I just really felt like things were comfortable from the get-
go. And I'm so pumped about year 2 coming up, we're going to have a lot of fun. I should note that it was very important to me that we established that we knew what we were doing last year. I wanted to ease into the job and not try to do too much early on. A transition like the one in the TV booth is a big deal for fans and I have so much respect for the position and the fans that I wanted to be cautious in my approach. I think if you watched all season you
probably noticed we opened the throttle a little bit more in the second half and "let our hair down" so to speak. My hope is that by the end of the year you felt like you you kind of knew Bob and me a little better and what we're all about.

On the ratings, I can't answer that one. My hope is that we didn't turn people away last year, but who really knows. I do know that if the Cubs win 95 games this year, more people will watch. And no, I will not take any credit for that (I'm serious about that). Tommy, my guess is that baseball ratings are driven by and large by the club's performance. Bob and I and our crew will do EVERYTHING we can to make the games informative and entertaining and we'll work as hard
as we can to do our best. Beyond that, the rest is out of our hands. More directly to your question, no, I don't feel pressure to rebound from anything because I'm proud of our work. Thanks for your question. Feel free to post a reply.
---

Len,
What seems to keep the Cubs from doing the basics well? We have a solid coaching staff and good talent but the fundamentals of defense and offense seem to be lost on them. We appear content waiting for the bomb instead of manufacturing runs preparing for the bomb
(unfortunately the HATED Cardinals do this really well, hence 2 straight runaway NL Central crowns). Will this year's team do this better?

Mike

Posted by Mike Foster at February 2, 2006 08:08 AM

LEN: Mike, I think the Cubs have stressed fundamentals and I think you'll see 1) a better defensive club and 2) a much better approach at the top of the order with Juan Pierre now in that spot.
---

Do you think the cubs will get amy more players before spring training starts? I think the cubs have a good team this year!!

Posted by kristen carrier at February 2, 2006 08:23 AM

LEN: Kristen, it's possible Jim Hendry could make another move or two before Opening Day. He's always looking to improve the team.
---

Len,

I'm a long time Cub fan (But not a Bud man!).

Do you think now, with the White Sox and Red Sox
both winning the World Series, that Cubs management will have a urgency to finally get to a World Series ? A 100 years is a long enough wait for a World Series championship, wouldn't you agree ?

Thanks, Chris
Hilliard, OH

Posted by Chris at February 2, 2006 11:35 AM

LEN: Chris, first off, a century is way too long to wait. On the sense of ugency, it would be there no matter what Boston and the Sox had done the last 2 years. That 100-year anniversary is getting way
too close. Let's hope the World Championship-less drought ends this year.
---

Len, I've been a cubs fan for as long as I can remember. What I would like is a relative newcomer's perspective. When you took this job did you have any idea of the number of fans this team had? Or the level of interest? You've been around every major league franchise, honestly, where do you think this team's fans rank in passion compared to the others?

Posted by Dan in KY at February 2, 2006 03:55 PM

LEN: Dan, by far, hands down, Cubs fans are the best fans I've ever been around. I surmised that that would be the case going in, but I experience it everyday now that I'm w/the Cubs. I'm incredibly
flattered to be a part of Cubs fans daily lives. I so desperately want to see the Cubs win the World Series for YOU.
---

Len,
I would like a candid take on this team. I am concerned for several reasons. We have thought the bullpen improved previously and it was not. Is this the time?? Can the starters stay healthy? Do we have enough "pop" in the order. I fear that, like so many versions of this team that I have followed since old enough (1958), this is another year in which we are doomed before the first pitch. I pray for more deals.

Posted by Bill Thieben at February 2, 2006 04:02 PM

LEN: Bill, I feel your frustration. Look, I can't put you at ease other than to say, again, I do think this team on paper is better than the team that finished 2005. But, I will add, a lot of things have to go right for this team to get to the promised land (just like the White Sox last year). But it can happen.
---

LEN-
Do you see the Cubs trying to resign Derrek Lee to a multi year deal before spring training? Also, do you think they will try to sign Pierre to a extension? Can't wait to hear you and BB on the tv so lets
get the season going ..... GO CUBS

Posted by chris at February 2, 2006 04:29 PM

LEN: Chris, yes, I think the Cubs would like to get Derrek locked up at some point. Pierre too. Hey, I can't wait to get it going!
---

LEN, why is zambrano the only one left available for arbitration, he would have been the very first one i would have taken care of! the others were of importance too not to go in front of a arbitrator, with the rumors before of him going to the o's or
something like that,i hope they are not in the works of a deal with another team involving zambrano?

Posted by leo s. at February 2, 2006 04:37 PM

LEN: Leo, My guess is they'll get Z's deal done soon. I think some of it had to w/the timing. Ohman's hearing was supposed to be last week, so that took priority. And no, I don't think Z is heading
anywhere else.
---

Since my name is Len... I'll answer some of the questions posted here... namely... those of you who want to get into broadcasting...TRY GOING TO BROADCASTING OR JOURNALISM SCHOOL. TAKE A JOB AT A
DOWNSTATE RADIO STATION OR SOMETHING. USE SOME INITIATIVE. As for where did Len Kasper go to college... if you were a REAL Cub fan or maybe LOOKED AT HIS BIO, you'd know he went to MARQUETTE. Just
thought I'd help.

Posted by Lenny C at February 2, 2006 07:59 PM

LEN: Lenny, thanks for the help!
---

Hello Len~

Wanted to know what you think of Matt Murton's potential to be a serious RBI and HR hitter? I really like his approach at the plate, and his base seems to have the potential to give him a lot of power in coming years.

Thanks,

- Chris
Hudson, WI.

LEN: Chris, I agree on all counts. Well stated.
---

Posted by Christopher Mick at February 2, 2006 10:45 PM

Len,

two quick ones, any plans to broadcast from the "new" left field seats? Also, are the cubs planning to do the usual green for St. Patty's Day? Always a good sign of spring!

thanks!

Posted by Michelle at February 3, 2006 03:42 AM

LEN: Michelle, not sure about St. Patrick's Day...on the bleachers, I'm sure we'll do another game out there this year at some point.
---

Len,

Which Cubs player has given you the best Chicago area restaurant recommendation and what restaurant would that be (with the exception of Harry Carry's of course)?

Thanks

Posted by Dan at February 3, 2006 12:46 PM

LEN: Dan, I can't really say which player, but I've gotten a lot of great recommendations. My favorite place is a breakfast place--Tempo.
---

Len,

I see big things in the future of infielder Ronnie Cedeno. What chances do you think Dusty will give the Venezualan?

Posted by Tim at February 3, 2006 12:58 PM

LEN: Tim, expect to see Ronny as the everyday shortstop.

Mail Call

First off, congratulations to the White Sox on winning the AL pennant. They are clearly the best team in the AL and deserve to be in the World Series. Their starting pitching has been just jaw-dropping and if that continues, the Sox have a great shot at winning it all. Not sure how Cubs fans out there feel about all this. Feel free to post your feelings.

I wanted to answer a few posts we've gotten over the past couple weeks. Here goes...
---
hey len,

i just wanted to ask a question about nomar's future with the cubs. i would love to see him back next year. i think he has proved to us that he is willing to do just about anything for the sake of the team, such
as playing third when aramis went down, or remember the night he got hurt in st. louis, he asked to dusty to drop him to the sixth slot because he was struggling. not only that, but he is still a very great hitter. what are the chances he will be back next year?

Posted by Brixen Ivy at October 7, 2005 11:45 AM

LEN: Hi Brixen, Nomar has already had an eventful off-season, helping save 2 women in the Boston Harbor. Let me say this - Nomar was a joy to be around and I just wish he had been healthy all year. The man can
simply hit. However, I'm not sure where he fits in next year - his asking price will likely be pretty high. The Cubs would like to improve defensively and I'm not sure I see him as a left fielder. My gut tells me he won't be back, but you never know.

---
Hey len how's it going i bet you are havin fun at home and i hope the cubs next year is goin to be good! and i hope we keep nomar on the cubs next year dempster is allways our closer no matter what and i hope we
keep our bullpen strong and i hope you are enjoing your offseason things. this blog is so fun for the cubs fans! lets hope the white sox win today!

Posted by kristenCarrier at October 7, 2005 11:49 AM

LEN: Kristen, yes, having fun getting into off-season mode and enjoying Chicago now that I have some more time off.

---
Hey Len , I hope you are enjoying your time off!
Just want to say Thanks to you and Bob for doing an awesome job this year!I am looking forward to the return of The baseball season in"06". I hope Nomar returns next year also. I also hope they will re-sign Todd Walker. Have you heard anything about them being re-signed?My husband is a sox fan and I have been watching too. I was wondering if you were catching any of the games? Have a great off season!

Posted by Debbie at October 7, 2005 02:13 PM

LEN: Hi Debbie, yes, I've been watching the post-season when I've been able to. I'm getting the impression most fans want to see Nomar return. It will be interesting to see what the Cubs do.

---
It's nice to hear from you....I hope you are enjoying your time off....I want you to know, Len, that I for one really appreciate the time and effort you put into your broadcasts. It really showed......I can tell you are dedicated.

If it hasn't already....you will find that the Cubs really grow on you and you will soon be a TRUE Fan if for nothing else because you can't help it.

It's GREAT to have a talent like you in the family.

Have a wonderful offseason and see you at Spring Training.

Hey Len!
I was wondering what it is you do during the off season. Any suggestions as to what us fellow Cubs fans can do to fill the time we previously committed to watching/attending games and following Cubs
news in the paper and internet? As a college student, I'll be busy with classes during the week, but when it comes to weekends that I would spend at the ballpark or watching the games with friends, what will I
do now? Any fun activities or quirks you can think of will be appreciated. Hope to get some answers in your next blog. Rest up for a season that I'm sure will last well into October! Go Cubs!

Posted by Anna Bednarczyk at October 7, 2005 02:17 PM

LEN: Hi Anna, just hanging with my family this off-season. We're trying to get to know the Chicago metro area a little better in the off-season. If you REALLY miss the Cubs, then maybe you should subscribe to MLB.TV and you can watch all the archived games on the
internet!

---
Len,

Saw your post on the MLB blog, and was extremely impressed by your ability to be open yet maintain your professionalism. I always wondered if the personalities we see on T.V. are just a façade maintained for the broadcast. It seems, in your case, you are the same person on and off the air.

To share your time with Cubs fans, during your vacation is an exceptional act of unselfishness. I can't tell you how much I appreciate the access you have granted the Cubs fans. I look forward to
future posts.

When time permits, I would like to hear your thoughts about Furcal, B. Giles, and Lofton. There seems to be a lot of attention focused on these three as prospects (re-prospect in Lofton's case) for the Cubs
organization. Is there one in particular that you think would be a "best fit" for our organization, assuming all three were interested in joining the team?

Again, thanks for sharing your time. Enjoy your off season.

Posted by Bill at October 7, 2005 04:39 PM

LEN: Hi Bill, thanks for the nice comments, but I enjoy doing this...seriously, it's fun for me to talk Cubs baseball year-round. On those free agents you mentioned, I like them all, but it will come down
to Jim Hendry's priorities and how much $$ he can throw around. I'd say Furcal and Giles would be at the top of my list of the guys you mentioned. I like Lofton too, although his age is a little concern.
But hey, one great year and a World Series and I'm good with that! Giles' OBP is what makes him attractive. And Furcal would instantly be
that leadoff guy the Cubs have been looking for.

---
Dear Len
Could you ask wgn if they could show some cubs games from this past season on wgn during sat's and sunday's?? I think it would be fun and people would get to tell you what game to put on. I thinik the first one should be the july 3rd game thanks again

---
Congrats to the WhiteSox, who just swept the RedSox.

I just have a few quick questions for whenever you get a chance: What are your favorite stadiums to visit? After a series, does it take long to get to the airport and to the next destination? Lastly, what was the change like going from the Marlins to the Cubs- any major differences? We all appreciate the change. Thanks for being a great all around person. Hope you have a great offseason; you deserve it. =]

Posted by Kyrstin at October 7, 2005 07:22 PM

LEN: Kyrstin, Wrigley is my #1. As far as other parks, SBC in SF, Dodger Stadium in LA and Minute Maid Park in Houston come to mind. But I like most of them to be honest. On your next question, we usually
are off the ground 2-3 hours after the game. And, the biggest difference is the Cubs fans and their incredible passion. I'm not knocking the Marlins fans at all...they have great fans. But Cubs fans
might be the best in all of sports and they outnumber most other teams' fans by a wide margin.

I'm from KS so i have only met 2 other Cubs fans

Hey Len,
I wish we were still keeping this blog going because we were in the playoffs, but..... oh well.. What I did want to ask was what is Jim Hendry and Dusty's priority NUMBER ONE heading into this offseason??????? Is it that combo lead-off man/centerfielder or a
thumping outfielder??Or is it BULLPEN or QUALITY STARTER??? I know what the papers have written and other blogs THINK, but you're CLOSE to the team. What's our most GLARING need?????? And Len... thanks for a great year. Hopefully next year we'll be participating instead of watching. Thanks.

Posted by lenny c at October 7, 2005 10:41 PM

LEN: Hey Lenny, my guess is that the #1 priority will be adding offense and figuring out the middle of the infield and the entire OF. From there, a starting pitcher and bullpen help. It's a lot to work on, but I'm sure Jim Hendry is figuring out his next move as you read this!

Len,

Do announcers do anything special in the off season to get ready for the new baseball season?

Hey Len-

Just wondering what you thought of the possibility of going after Johnny Damon as a leadoff hitter?

Hi Len,

I'm writing from Spring Hill, Florida (around the Tampa area) and I just want to congratulate both you and Bob on your first year of doing Cubs baseball together and hope for an even better second year in 2006. A few questions:

1. I know you're probably enjoying your long vacation but does it kinda hurt not to have the Cubs in the playoffs so you guys could have a few more days' work even if you wouldn't be calling the games on TV?

2. How much of the MLB playoffs do you usually watch on TV?

3. Does the White Sox advancing into the ALCS bring hope that there could be a World Series winner in Chicago?

Hope to be hearing from you when you get the time. Thanks very much.

Sincerely,
Jimmy Delach,
Spring Hill, Fla.

Posted by Jimmy Delach at October 9, 2005 11:08 PM

LEN: Jimmy, 1) Yes, I'd much rather be following the Cubs into the World Series right now than talking about next season. 2) I watch more as the playoffs get closer to the World Series. I do my best to not
miss the big moments. 3) Now that the White Sox are in the World Series with home field advantage, I'd say they're in a great position.

---
Hey Len -- you've earned the right to kick back and knock back a few cold ones while watching the postseason....please enjoy and continue to
do so! But when you feel ready to post some answers here, I'd like to know why everyone keeps talking about Furcal possibly going to the Cubs. Do they know something about Nomar's status that we don't? Also,
where has BB been? I thought he was gonna be calling games on Fox with Thom Brennaman, but I haven't seen him yet. Thanks again for a great year -- I'm knocking a few back myself, right along with ya! :)

Now that the Astros have won, I officially HATE the NL representatives -- I find myself with no choice but to pull for the AL from here on out! BLAH!! :(

Posted by Carrie C. at October 10, 2005 09:06 AM

LEN: Carrie, BB is calling the NLCS w/Brennaman and Lyons. And they sound great. And now that the White Sox are in the World Series, are you going to pull for them?

---
Len,

What's the one significant issue you think the Cubs need to address in the offseason? For me, it absolutely has to be the outfield. We lost
production at the positions it is usually the easiest to find it - the corner OF. In general baseball terms, up the middle if more defense oriented, and the corners are for offense. Do you think Burnitz and
Murton are the answers at these positions? And is C-Patt going to be able to re-establish himself as a reliable CF?

For me, this outweighs starting pitching (if Wood, Prior, and Zambrano are healthy we're fine) and relief (which tends to be unpredictable). Your thoughts?

Posted by Kyle B. at October 10, 2005 09:01 PM

LEN: Kyle, I think the bullpen and adding guys who get on base are the most pressing issues. I guess I don't really care where they play (RF/SS/2B). I think the Cubs' offense suffered from a lack of
baserunners...not enough walks and too much inconsistency because of the low OBP. Defensively, this team needs to improve as well. And you're right--up the middle has to be solid defensively. P.S., I think Matt Murton has a pretty legitimate shot at being the everyday LF--why? Because he gets on base, has a good approach and showed a little pop at the end of the year as well. And at last check, he was doing very well in the Arizona Fall League.

---
Well Len,

I hope that mood to post happesn as much as it can, so that the Chicago Cubs fans won't forget about you, and I hope that you will still get to read your e-mail for the WGN Cubs TV booth, even through the season has
ended for them.

Posted by Stephen Verhaeren at October 10, 2005 09:11 PM

LEN: Stephen, I'll be around all off-season ready to talk Cubs baseball!

---
Len,

Just wanted to post and tell you that you and Bob Brenly did an outstanding job as the new voices of the Cubs this season. I look forward to next season and hope the Cubs can turn it around.

Hope you enjoy the off season

What changes do you see the Cubs making in the off season? Will they trade Corey Patterson? I think if they Put Hairston in Center they have a quality leadoff hitter and some speed at the top. Look what Posednik did for the White Sox. What about in left field? I have an idea. I heard that Magglio Ordonez was not happy in Detroit. How about bringing him back to Chicago in a Cub uniform. I know it would take a lot to get him and he has a big contract but he would make a great Cub left fielder.

Posted by Patrick Lake at October 11, 2005 02:05 PM

LEN: Hi Patrick, I would view Hairston as a great super-sub--a guy who can play 2B and all 3 OF spots. The Ordonez theory is interesting...but is he a health risk? On Patterson, wow, that's a tough one - you can't get anything of value if you try to trade him, but he can't help the Cubs unless he makes some major changes in his approach. Who knows, maybe 2005 was just a bizarre anomaly and he'll show up at spring training a new player.

---
It's too bad the cubs lost I thought for sure that they were gonna kick butt this year. Also I'd like them to show Aramis Ramirez's game saving homerun.

thanks by!!!!

Monday Mailbag

Hey Gang, I thought I'd answer/address a few posts today...

Hey Len,
Thanks for the input. And YES... the CUBBIES are big EVERYWHERE. Coming from Florida this must be new to you, but we've got a strong contingent of Cub fans in Idaho and Oregon too. And what's more, Cub fans KNOW how important supporting their team is in the big scheme of things. So we come out, no matter the city. Posted by lenny c at June 4, 2005 06:10 PM

Lenny, love the name first and foremost. I knew the Cubs had an incredible following when I took this job, but until you experience it for the first time, it doesn't REALLY register just how far-reaching it is. I'm so honored to be able to be around it every day.

Len and Bob:

What are the Cubs doing to curb the number of strikeouts Corey Paterson in accumulating this season? I believe Cardinal manager Whitey Herzog used to fine or punish Ozzie Smith when hit the ball in the air. Do you think something like this would work with Paterson. Thanks Posted by James at June 4, 2005 09:43 PM

James, I don't think that's a solution at this point. It's a different era now and managers can't do the same things they used to do. I'm sure Dusty and Bob have some interesting stories of how tough their managers were when they played, but today's players are just treated differently. I'm sure the guys who played in the '40s and '50s were amazed at how easy the guys in the '60s and '70s had it. Guys were always tougher way back when, right! No matter the era. Dusty has been pretty upfront about Corey needing to make adjustments and let's hope he does. There's a lot of talent there...the Cubs are just looking for some consistency.

Len,

Consider yourself lucky. I'm only 24 years old and have been "targeted" by pigeons every time I travel--once in Venice, Italy; once in Bath, England (no pun intended); and once on my honeymoon in Honolulu. I'm a walking bullseye--maybe it's the Cubs hat I wear everywhere. Funny it never happens when I'm at home....
Jeremy Uecker
Austin, TX Posted by Jeremy Uecker at June 4, 2005 11:19 PM

Jeremy, I guess I was fortunate! Yikes.

I recently relocated to N.C. two weeks ago and am so happy that I get to watch Cubs games on TV again! I lived for 4 years in a town that refused my petitions to carry WGN, can you believe it? Mississippi needs an overhaul. The Cubbies are playing quality baseball and Derrek Lee is still on fire. My question is... HOW is he not leading the all-star vote? I think I maxed out my voting privileges. Also, if he continues the season as he has started it, there is no question that he is the unanimous MVP. The Cubbies would not be where they are now without him and he has shown this in is play with his walk-off homers, 3 run hr's in a 1 run game to change the complexion of the game, and ability to hit everything he sees. From what I understand, that is VALUABLE. Why would anyone on ESPN (PTI, Around The Horn) be able to continue their "valid" arguments of Pujols to be a better candidate than D. Lee? I am so confused. Let's get some more runs. Posted by Jason M at June 4, 2005 11:19 PM

Jason, this isn't that hard--guys with a long-standing reputation always get the votes. It's just the way it works. Derrek has never been an All-Star, so even if he were hitting .600, non-Cubs fans are still going to consider voting for Pujols. Derrek will make the team, probably as a back-up and then next year he'll get more votes. All-Star voting isn't normally about who's having the best first half. It's about who's a more widely-known commodity.

I have a question about tonight's broadcast.

Why would you advocate ejecting Harry the Heckler for throwing back a home run ball? Debris on the field??? We've been doing it at Wrigley for YEARS. The left field bleachers would be empty if everyone who threw back an opposing team's home run ball were ejected for throwing "debris" on the field. ;)

Or were you just being facetious?

Sincerely,
A Proud Left Field Bleacher Widow Posted by Debi at June 4, 2005 11:28 PM

Debi, I don't recall advocating Harry's ejection. If any reference was made to it, it was done with tongue firmly in cheek.

1 more post.... some helpful words.

tractable \TRAK-tuh-buhl\, adjective:
1. Capable of being easily led, taught, or managed; docile.
2. Easily handled, managed, or worked; malleable.

This can be used to describe Derrek Lee's effect on a baseball or the effect of the Cubs on opposing teams this road trip.

inscrutable \in-SKROO-tuh-buhl\, adjective:
Difficult to fathom or understand; difficult to be explained or accounted for satisfactorily; obscure; incomprehensible; impenetrable.

It is inscrutable that D. Lee is not leading the all star voting.

And lastly.....

lambaste \lam-BAYST\, transitive verb:
1. To give a thrashing to; to beat severely.

As in the 5th inning in tonight's game. Posted by Jason M at June 4, 2005 11:32 PM

Jason, thanks for the suggestions. We've gotten a great response on the Word of the Day and I feel a lot smarter already!

Thanks for the posts as always. Should be a fun homestand with the Jays/Sox/Marlins coming in. We'll see at the park or on the Superstation!

Mail Call

Hey Gang, gonna answer some posts on the blog from this week...here goes.

Oh great, Ryan Dempster to the bullpen. All our problems have been solved!!!! He has a 5.35 ERA, opponents bat .280 against him, he's walked 22 batters in 33 innings...I feel much better now. Especially with Jon Leicester in the starting rotation.
Hey, at least Sammy's gone (please note sarcasm).
Posted by Ron Albertson at May 9, 2005 10:13 AM

Len: Ron, are you the guy who was played by Fred Willard in "Waiting For Guffman"? Same name, just wondered...to reply, I can understand your frustration, but keep in mind that Dempster was going to be in the closer mix in spring training before the Wood and Prior injuries and at this point, the Cubs don't have a lot of other options. As far as Leicester goes, he was optioned to AAA Tuesday with Sergio Mitre taking his roster spot (he'll pitch out of the bullpen).

I think if Borowski gets healthy he can get back to where he was a couple of seasons ago and be fairly reliable. We need him back in a bad way or the office better get on task and find a way to trade towards a better bullpen. That or the bats have to get REALLY hot.
Posted by Scott at May 9, 2005 03:23 PM

Len: Scott, while the Cubs need Borowski back in a bad way as you put it, it might be too much to expect him to be the savior, especially early on. I think the Cubs would like to see Dempster grab this job for good, or at least for awhile. They don't want to keep moving him back and forth between the rotation and the bullpen if at all possible.

THANK GOD,anybody but letroy hawkins.how many times can u put a guy in a game to blow it,what took baker so long, also with dempster being a closer and wood hurt are starting rotation is falling apart, they need to bring back glendon rusch as a starter not john leicster.
Posted by leo surprenant at May 9, 2005 04:57 PM

Len: Leo, Dusty's options have been rather limited. Again, I feel the frustration, but with the Wood and Borowski injuries, two key guys are missing, putting other guys in spots they're either struggling with or are unfamiliar with.

Let's give Ryan Dempster a try as the closer. Being a closer is a different role and I think he will excel at the position. I mean who would have thought that borowski would have been such a success.
I'm not saying that Ryan will eclipse eric gagne, but if you look at the stats Ryan's numbers are pretty close to what gagne did as a starter. We won't know how well Ryan can do as the closer unless we give him the ball.
Keep the faith.
Posted by Jim Reisz at May 9, 2005 06:41 PM

Len: Jim, "keep the faith," I like that line!

Hey guys

Your right, that was a bad stratch of games there. I dont think any one should blame dusty for the cubs mastakes, the players have to take the blame, so if i hear any one say everything is dusty's falt i'll get very upset.
jeff berta
Posted by jeff berta at May 9, 2005 07:07 PM

Len: Jeff, it really does come down to the players and how they execute. Dusty has made changes in the lineup, he's moved guys around in the bullpen, he's tried to shake things up. Bottom line, the Cubs can't sustain anymore injuries and need the healthy guys to pick up the pace.

I was wondering what dusty baker's problem with Jason Dubois is? He gives ben grieve a start over dubois. Do they have some problems or what? Dubois is batting almost .300 Holly is around .221 you would think dubois would get a shot. Not that I dont like holly just you got to do what is best for the team and if one guy is hitting better that give him some chances. I think that is my only issue with Dusty this year other wise I think he is doing ok. Just come on dusty give jason a shot.
Posted by Derek at May 9, 2005 07:55 PM

Len: Derek, I think you're going to see Dubois get more playing time. He hit a HR Tuesday night and it looks like he's gonna get a shot at playing more in LF.

Ok I know its early but the Cubs need to pull a major trade or quite honestly start a scrap with someone. This team has no heart and no quick desire. Yes I never played, my "bust" isnt in Cooperstown. But ive been a fan my whole life(38) and looking back at the history at stuff that did work. The Cubs pulled two major trades in 1984 and made the playoffs. C.C. Sabathia would be my choice as the (pocket gm of the cubs). Plus with interleague play coming up C.C. has some experience with the American league. I shouldnt say they dont have desire but they need to overtake the redbirds because i see the wild card coming out of the east. They simply need to play with more energy.
Posted by Mike Battista at May 9, 2005 09:28 PM

Len: Mike, if Jim Hendry could get CC Sabathia, he'd make that deal immediately, believe me. But he's exactly the kind of player that NO team will give up. The Indians are building their team around young players like him and Victor Martinez and Travis Hafner. It's like asking the Cubs if they want to trade Carlos Zambrano. Not gonna happen. Now, if you want to give up Zambrano, maybe you can get Sabathia, but you get my point.

My comment doesnt really have much to do with the game or Leicester. It has more to do with the broadcast today.I looked it up and if anyone was wondering about the left-handed catchers thing, here is the list of left-handed catchers and the number of games they have played.
1,073 Clements, Jack

Ask Len - The Stretch, Closers, and More

Hey Gang, I saw a recent post that said, "Hey, it's a blog, why don't you guys reply to some posts!" or something to that effect. And he was right! So, here goes:

Posted by Matthom at April 25, 2005 11:53 AM

Here are some things that irritate me, while listening to 7th inning stretch singers:

1 - When they don't sing, and just hold the mic out, wave it around, and let the crowd sing for them.

2 - And, when they say the most often used catch phrase at the end - "let's get some runs!"

Other than that, all singers are interesting... you'll both do a good job. Can't wait to hear it.

LEN: Agreed on point #1. I probably did it the first time. Here's why--I'm not a good singer! It's a good way to lessen the impact of bad crooning. I'll promise I won't do it Wednesday. And on the "Let's get some runs" point, c'mon, you HAVE to say that, no?

Posted by jj Carlson at April 25, 2005 01:19 PM

with dempster struggling in the beginning i thinke the cubs should put him in the closer spot for the time being until joe gets back maybe longer and call up someone like sergio mitre or even maybe trade i know that the royals have very young great pitching in the majors and minors maybe for the right deal theyll do it like a runellyes hernandez or someone else

LEN: JJ, my guess is that Michael Wuertz will get the next shot now w/Chad Fox injured. Dempster is more valuable starting--you don't want to weaken your rotation in an attempt to strengthen your closer spot w/a guy who's never done it. Wuertz has done it in the minors. Dempster is simply more comfortable as a starting pitcher right now.

Posted by Sean Johnson at April 24, 2005 09:41 PM

Hey Len and Bob. I am not worried about the cubs at all but if Kerry Wood keeps having shoulder problems but if Kerry does not get better do you think we have a better chance winning if we trade Kerry and bring up Angel Guzman or have someone else pitch every other fifth day.

Thanks Sean Johnson
GO CUBBIES

LEN: Sean, Guzman is out w/forearm inflammation right now, so he's not an option. IMO you don't trade away the team's strength--starting pitching. Yes, Kerry has battled injuries, but trading him is not the answer right now. This team's strength is the rotation.

Posted by Jims at April 25, 2005 12:10 PM

Len-

We love the Bill James reference during the game.

Keep it up

LEN: Glad you noticed. I try to drop in some sabermetric stuff on occasion without getting too "nerdy" on the air. I'm sure as we move along, Bob and I will have some good "old school vs. new school" debates. As you know, not everything James has written is widely accepted inside the game. But there's some good stuff to use when the situation fits.

Keep posting and we'll answer some on the blog and some on the air throughout the season!

April 14, 2005

Ask Len - Danny Murphy?

Phil and Nancy Pontillo
Pleasant Prairie, Wisconsin

Back in the late 50's, could be 1959 or 1960, I'm not sure, the Cubs had a ball player, top prospect by the name of Danny Murphy. He was called the $40,000 bonus baby. He came up at the end of the year for about 20 or 30 games and once the season ended we never heard any more about him. Maybe Ron might know what became of him.

Phil & Nancy,

We put the WGN staff on this one. Here are the numbers on Danny Murphy from the Baseball Encyclopedia:

Mesa Update From Len

We're getting ready for our second WGN telecast on Saturday vs. Milwaukee. For Bob and me, it will be our third game working together. For the Cubs, Carlos Zambrano will get the start. It's actually a split-squad game for the Cubs, who will start Glendon Rusch vs. Oakland over in Phoenix.

With the uncertain health of Kerry Wood and Mark Prior, it's possible Carlos could be the Cubs Opening Day starter. When you look at last year's numbers (16-8/2.75) he'd certainly be an excellent choice. The Cubs surely want Wood and Prior back ASAP, but the good news in all this is the Cubs have some depth in their rotation and it may come in handy in early April. I look at it this way, there are a lot of teams that would take Zambrano and Maddux as their top two starters. You put that tandem with a hopefully healthy Wood and Prior and 1 through 4 the Cubs rotation might be the best of the lot in the National League.

Tune in Saturday and we'll have the Cubs and Brewers from Mesa!

Ask Len

From Carl in Danville:

Len - if you could pick one broadcast job out there for any team, what team would that be? Did you have any reservations coming into this season and if so, what were they? Lastly, how nervous were you really coming into your first game?

Great questions Carl. 1) I have the best play-by-play not only in baseball, but in sports, IMO. I honestly never dreamed I would ever have the chance to call Cubs games on WGN, but luckily, I was in the right place at the right time. 2) How nervous was I? Tough to answer, but I can say that I always have butterflies on game day. ALWAYS. It's that adrenaline that I get before going on the air that helps me stay sharp throughout the game. Actually, I've been more nervous at home just THINKING about the enormity of this job than I've been in the booth! It's like, "Wow, I can't believe this isn't a dream!"
