Sunday baseball wrap

BY ADAM RONIS

C.C. Sabathia continues to dominate the National League. He threw a one-hit shutout, walking three and striking out 11. He is 9-0 with a 1.43 ERA since joining the Brewers. The hit was also a questionable call that upset the Brewers. Sabathia went to pick up a slow roller to the third base side of the mound and went to snare it with the bare hand and couldn't. At least for Mets fans, you will miss him when the Mets play the Brewers starting Monday.

Ty Wigginton had a great month of August and capped it with his 21st homer giving him 12 for the month. Make sure he is owned in your league.

The Braves had one of the best lineups in the league entering the season. Now, they resemble the Washington Nationals. Yunel Escobar hit fifth today. He went 2-for-4 with a run, homer and three RBIs. He is hitting .282 with eight homers and 55 RBIs. And the Yankees thought they have it bad.

Chris Dickerson is off to a fast start for the Reds. The outfielder went 1-for-4 with two runs and a walk and is now hitting .324 with 14 runs, four home runs and 10 RBIs in 68 at-bats. He also stole his fifth base today. He's worth a pickup, especially if you need steals.

Carlos Beltran might be ready to go on one of his usual torrid tears. He homered for the second time in three games and has 21 homers and 93 RBIs.

The Mets bullpen didn't blow it this time, allowing Pedro Martinez to pick up his fifth win of the season. He went six innings and allowed seven hits, two runs, one walk and struck out four. He is 5-3 with a 5.07 ERA. Don't count on him.

Rocco Baldelli could be a big boost for the Rays as well as your fantasy team in the final month. He went 3-for-3 with two runs, an RBI and a walk. He is hitting .351 in 34 at-bats and the talent is there. It's always a question of health with him. He's a good pickup.

Jayson Werth is getting the chance to play every day with Geoff Jenkins on the disabled list and he's taken advantage. He hit his 21st homer and also drove in three. He's a worthy addition for the final month.

If you're in dire need of pitching, take a look at Kevin Milwood. I picked him up last week in a deep league and he came though today. It was his third straight excellent start. He pitched two consecutive complete games before going 6 2/3 innings and allowing five hits, two runs, no walks and struck out seven for the win.

Jake Peavy throws eight scoreless innings with 13 strikeouts and doesn't get a win because Trevor Hoffman blows the game. Then Hoffman gets a win.

Carlos Zambrano was scratched from his start with a tired arm. He could start Tuesday or Wednesday.

Young to return and start tomorrow

BY ADAM RONIS

Chris Young will come off the disabled list after sitting out with a strained forearm and start tomorrow against the Dodgers in Los Angeles. Young has been on the disabled list twice this season. The first time was because of a broken nose when he was hit in the face off a line drive from Albert Pujols. Young has struggled this season, but if he is available in your league, you will find few pitchers with his upside. He is 4-4 with a 4.74 ERA. If you need pitching, grab him.

NFL news

BY ADAM RONIS

Here's some news that will be helpful when participating in the final few drafts this week.

The Bengals released running back Rudi Johnson. Johnson took too long to recover from the same hamstring he hurt last season. Johnson could sign with another team. He's worth a late-round draft pick in the hopes of landing somewhere where he could get some carries. Still, his health is a major concern.

With Johnson gone, Chris Perry will get most of the carries for the Bengals. Perry has yet to show he can remain healthy. Kenny Watson will also get some carries.

The Cardinals will start the season with Kurt Warner as the quarterback. Warner had some of the best fantasy numbers among quarterbacks the second half of the season last year. He will put up good numbers. I just can't see him staying healthy the entire season.

At least the Texans made it a little easier for fantasy owners to decided which back of theirs to take. Chris Brown was placed on injured reserve with a back injury, ending his season. That leaves Ahman Green, the starter for now with a penchant for getting injured, Steve Slaton and Chris Taylor. I wouldn't take any of these guys early. I'd gamble on Slaton late.

Cowboys wide receiver Sam Hurd has an ankle injury and will miss the first game. He could be a sleeper in deep leagues.

The Seahawks depleted receiving corps took another hit when Ben Obomanu was placed on injured reserve with a broken clavicle ending his season.

The Saints released kicker Taylor Mehlaff. Martin Gramatica will kick.

Blue Jays recall prospect Snider

BY ADAM RONIS

If you are an avid fantasy baseball player and follow the minor leagues, Blue Jays outfielder Travis Snider needs no introduction. It didn't look like he would get called up this season, but the Blue Jays traded Matt Stairs to the Phillies Thursday, which opened a spot for Snider to join the Blue Jays.

Snider, selected 14th overall two years ago, made his major league debut tonight and went 1-for-3 with a double to deep center in the sixth and scored the lone run in a 2-1 loss. I was at the game and here are some of his thoughts after the game.

"It's unbelievable," said the 20-year old. "The timing of everything worked out. I couldn't ask for a better situation. It's been a dream of mine to play here."

Snider, who is 5-11, 245 pounds, lined out to Derek Jeter in the third inning before lacing a double over the head of Johnny Damon with one out in the sixth. He scored on a single by Marco Scutaro.

"It felt good to go out there and put the ball in play," Snider said. "It went over his head and to start your career with a double in Yankee Stadium is pretty special."

Snider came up with runners at first and second and no outs in the eighth against Edwar Ramirez and struck out looking.

"I got good pitches to hit and didn't pull the trigger," he said. "It's a good learning situation for me in my debut in front of all these fans. I take it as a lesson learned."

Snider started the season at Single-A, advanced to Double-A and was promoted to Triple-A earlier this month. He hit .344 with two home runs and 17 RBIs in 18 games for Triple-A Syracuse, which is why the Blue Jays decided to recall him. He has struck out 154 times in 487 minor league at-bats this season.

Snider played mostly rightfield in the minors, but has played leftfield the past month and has a good arm. It is expected that he and Adam Lind will rotate between leftfield and designated hitter. Lind was the designated hitter tonight.

Snider should be added in keeper leagues and deep mixed league as well as AL-only leagues. He is clearly a good hitter, but he will strike out a lot.

Indians activate V-Mart

BY ADAM RONIS

The Indians activated catcher Victor Martinez from the disbled list today and he is in the starting lineup at first base. Martinez struggled before going on the disabled list and hasn't hit a home run this season. He is worth an add if he is available in your league because of his track record.

Beckett placed on disabled list

BY ADAM RONIS

The Red Sox placed Josh Beckett on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to August 19 with a strained right elbow. Beckett visited Dr. James Andrews today and everything came back fine. Beckett had had his start pushed back three times before being placed on the DL today. He is scheduled to pitch next Friday.

Marshall's suspension reduced to one game

BY ADAM RONIS

Broncos wide receiver Brandon Marshall won the appeal of his suspension and had it reduced from three games to one. If you already had your draft and selected him, you are very lucky. He will now move further up in drafts. I compiled my receiver list for Friday's paper before this news. He moves into my top 10. He had 102 receptions for 1,325 yards and seven touchdowns last season.

My team

BY ADAM RONIS

I participated in a 12-team draft last night and had the No. 7 pick. It's a league where you start QB. RB, RB, WR, WR, TE, K, DEF and must draft 2 QB, 4 RB, 4 WR, 2 TE, 2 K and 2 DEF. It's standard scoring except the longer the touchdown, the more points you get.
Here's my team:

Round 1: Steven Jackson
Round 2: Reggie Wayne
Round 3: Marques Colston
Round 4: LenDale White
Round 5: Kellen Winslow Jr.
Round 6: Selvin Young
Round 7: Roddy White
Round 8: Matt Schaub
Round 9: Jake Delhomme
Round 10: Ray Rice
Round 11: Jerry Porter
Round 12: Titans Defense
Round 13: Mason Crosby
Round 14: Donald Lee
Round 15: Redskins defense
Round 16: John Kasay

Defensive rankings

BY ADAM RONIS

It's not worth taking a defense in the seventh or eighth rounds. The Ravens and Bears defenses' were taken early last season and disappointed. You can find a good defense late and in many leagues you can play matchups each week by finding a defense on the waiver wire.

1. Vikings, Week 8 bye
2. Chargers, Week 9 bye
3. Patriots, Week 4 bye
4. Bears, Week 8 bye
5. Cowboys, Week 10 bye

Monday baseball wrap

BY ADAM RONIS

I would have taken Jorge Toca over Carlos Delgado back in May. That's how awful he looked. He couldn't hit a good fastball and he was swinging at awful pitches. He wasn't walking that much. Delgado has been on a tear since late June. Could it be due to the departure of Willie Randolph? Could it be because he is finally healthy after a hip injury and fracturing his wrist on the last weekend of the season last year?

Whatever the reason for his stark turnaround, he looks completely different. He hit .357 with nine homers and 24 RBIs in July and has five homers and 21 RBIs this month. Delgado hit two home runs and had six RBIs against the Astros and has 28 homers and 90 RBIs. It wasn't too long ago that Jason Giambi looked like the better first baseman in New York. Guess the power of the thong wore off.

The Mets wanted to be cautious with Mike Pelfrey as he approaches a career high in innings at the pro level. With John Maine placed on the disabled list and possibly out for the season, that may be an arduous task. Pelfrey kept his pitch count low, throwing 108 in his second straight complete game. He allowed six hits, one run, walked none and struck out six. He leads the Mets in wins. He is 13-8 with a 3.70 ERA. Again, you can always find pitching in fantasy. Pelfrey has been hittable, but he limits the walks and homers -- just nine on the season -- and gets out of trouble by using his sinker to induce double plays.

Luis Castillo returned from the DL and went 0-for-4 with a walk. No need to own him.

With no clear cut favorite for MVP in the NL, why not Jose Reyes? He is hitting .303 with 33 doubles, 15 triples, 93 runs, 13 homers, 55 RBIs and 41 stolen bases. He also is a very good defensive player.

I own Jimmy Rollins in two leagues. I am first in one and in the best-of-three championship starting next week, so he hasn't killed me yet. He was in a 4-for-46 slump before going 3-for-3 with a double, triple and two RBIs. Don't worry J-Roll, I only boo you against the Mets.

Despite only 10 walks on the season, Alexei Ramirez is having a good season. He went 4-for-5 and is hitting .314.

I always see mixed opinions on Grady Sizemore. Some people think he is an overrated fantasy player. Need proof? When I was a guest on a show this year, I was asked who is better for this year: Sizemore or Matt Kemp. Sizemore may only hit .270, but I'll take his 40-40 potential. It might happen this season or next year. He reached 30-30 tonight. He hit two home runs tonight and has 31 home runs and 81 RBIs with 82 runs and 34 stolen bases. He's had no protection and hasn't had Travis Hafner or Victor Martinez for most of the season. His walk rate is up, strikeouts are down and he has been caught stealing only three times. He just turned 26.

Jensen Lewis is 7-for-7 since taking over as closer and allowed one run in those chances.

Jody Gerut has been sizzling the past month. He hit his 14th homer and is worth adding if you need some power.

Brandon Lyon has been awful recently, but Jon Rauch hasn't been much better. He has allowed eight runs in his last 5 2/3 innings, including at least one run in five of his last six appearances. He allowed two runs in the bottom of the ninth to lose Monday. Tony Pena has pitched 6 2/3 scoreless innings with a 9/2 K/BB ratio in his last seven appearances and could get a chance to close.

Is Myers back?

BY ADAM RONIS

Sometimes you need to stick with your original instinct when a player struggles badly. I always preach patience and usually adhere to that mantra. I deviated from it when it came to Brett Myers. I thought he would have a good season and was able to draft him in one league. On more than one occasion, I said you should buy low, even when Carl Pavano appeared like a better option at the time.

Even after Myers was demoted to the minors, I thought he still had a chance to be good. But after his first start back against the Mets when he walked five, I thought he might not turn it around and dropped him. Since then, he has pitched much better. His velocity has increased and his walks have decreased. What really hurt him the first three months was allowing way too many homers.

In seven starts since his return, he has allowed just two. He threw seven scoreless innings against the Dodgers Monday night, allowing nine hits, three walks and struck out eight. He is 4-1 with a 1.66 ERA and a 38/13 K/BB ratio since his minor league stint. I think it is safe to own him in all leagues.

Rangers recall Cruz

BY ADAM RONIS

The Rangers recalled outfielder Nelson Cruz, who put up big numbers in the minors this season. Cruz started in leftfield and hit seventh Monday night, going 3-for-5 with a double, home run and three RBIs. Cruz, 28, has struggled in his times when getting a crack at the major league level. He hit 37 home runs with 24 stolen bases at Triple-A Oklahoma. He should be picked up in AL-only leagues and deep mixed leagues.

Guardado traded to Twins

BY ADAM RONIS

The Rangers traded Eddie Guardado to the Twins for righthanded pitcher Mark Hamburger. Guardado was 3-3 with a 3.65 ERA and 1.11 WHIP in 49 1/3 innings with four saves. Hamburger, 21, was 13-for-14 in save chances in 27 games for the Rookie-level Elizabethton Twins. He was 1-2 with a 4.17 ERA.

Frank Francisco should get the chance to close for the Rangers. He is 2-5 with a 3.78 ERA and 65/22 K/BB ratio in 52 1/3 innings.

Revised running back rankings

BY ADAM RONIS

Rankings based on standard scoring.
1. LaDainian Tomlinson (Chargers), Week 9 bye: Has missed one game in seven seasons and totaled at least 18 touchdowns in four straight seasons.
2. Adrian Peterson (Vikings), Week 8 bye: Averaged 5.6 yards per carry. Had six 100-yard games, including two over 200, but also had eight games with 78 or less. Started just nine games.
3. Steven Jackson (Rams), Week 5 bye: Expect the Jackson from two years ago when he had 2,334 yards from scrimmage and 90 receptions. He’s explosive and finished last season strong.
4. Brian Westbrook (Eagles), Week 7 bye: Does it all and is the focal point of the offense. More than 2,000 total yards two straight seasons. Bump up to No. 2 in PPR leagues.
5. Joseph Addai (Colts), Week 4 bye: Didn’t finish in the top 10 in carries, but got many attempts at the goal line.
6. Marion Barber III (Cowboys), Week 10 bye: Didn’t start yet scored 28 total touchdowns the last two seasons. He’ll share carries with Felix Jones, but his touches will increase.
7. Marshawn Lynch (Bills), Week 6 bye: Expect a big season. He is the feature of the offense and will see more passes out of the backfield. Keep an eye on an offensive line situation that is growing worse by the day.
8. Clinton Portis (Redskins), Week 10 bye: Proven back that will get over 300 carries and be more involved in passing game.
9. Frank Gore (49ers), Week 9 bye: In a poor offense and injury-prone. Will see more passes with Mike Martz calling plays, so bump up in PPR leagues.
10. Larry Johnson (Chiefs), Week 6 bye: Missed time with an injured foot last season and has a shaky offense around him.
11. Maurice Jones-Drew (Jaguars), Week 7 bye: Has 24 touchdowns in his first two seasons and Fred Taylor is 32.
12. Laurence Maroney (Patriots), Week 4 bye: Finished last season strong after being slowed by injuries. Is undervalued and the Patriots should run more. Bump down in PPR leagues.
13. Ryan Grant (Packers), Week 8 bye: Should get plenty of carries to ease the pressure on Aaron Rodgers.
14. Jamal Lewis (Browns), Week 5 bye: He’ll get the bulk of the carries in a very good offense.
15. Reggie Bush (Saints), Week 9 bye: Bump up several spots in PPR leagues.
16. Willis McGahee (Ravens), Week 10 bye: Feature of a run-oriented offense.
17. Brandon Jacobs (Giants), Week 4 bye: Injuries limited his touches last season, but he will produce when healthy.
18. LenDale White (Titans), Week 6 bye: Could be a bargain. Chris Johnson's stock is rising, but White will get the bulk of the goal-line carries.
19. Michael Turner (Falcons), Week 7 bye: Showed a lot of promise with the Chargers. The Falcons’ offensive line is weak, but he should still get 1,000 yards.
20. Willie Parker (Steelers), Week 6 bye: Will lose some carries.
21. Earnest Graham (Bucs), Week 10 bye: A solid No. 2 RB.
22. Thomas Jones (Jets), Week 5 bye: Improved offensive line will boost his numbers.

Bears name Orton starter

BY ADAM RONIS

The Bears announced that Kyle Orton will be the starting quarterback. He is near the bottom of the quarterback rankings. Rex Grossman will be the backup. Neither are appealing fantasy options.

Running back strategy

BY ADAM RONIS

A popular strategy in fantasy football is to stock up on running backs. With so many injuries at the position, it makes sense. But the popular trend of running back committees has altered that approach. I took three running backs with my first three picks in a 16-team league last season. I highly doubt I will repeat that this season.

You can have a certain strategy entering the draft, but always adapt. It's all about value. You may go in thinking RB-WR-RB and then Tom Brady is staring you in the face in Round 3. When it comes to running backs, the committees have changed the way you draft them. Running backs will still be primarily drafted in the first round. If you can get a running back that is pretty much assured of 300 carries, you do it. The trick comes towards the end of the first round when a wide receiver may be more appealing, especially in a PPR league.

Drafting two running backs in the first two rounds isn't ideal this season. Not many running backs will get the bulk of their team's touches. Also, many first-round running backs were busts last season. It's still important to get at least one solid running back in the first three rounds. There are several running backs being selected in round four or later that could have very good value. Plus, there could be another Ryan Grant, Earnest Graham or Mike Shanahan will find an ice cream truck driver to fill his running back slot.

Running backs to get most of team's carries

LaDainian Tomlinson (Chargers)
Adrian Peterson (Vikings)
Brian Westbrook (Eagles)
Joseph Addai (Colts)
Steven Jackson (Rams)
Clinton Portis (Redskins)
Frank Gore (49ers)
Larry Johnson (Chiefs)
Willis McGahee (Ravens)
Marshawn Lynch (Bills)
Jamal Lewis (Browns)
Ryan Grant (Packers)
Thomas Jones (Jets)
Edgerrin James (Cardinals)
Michael Turner (Falcons)
Marion Barber (Cowboys): Might not get as many carries as some of the running backs mentioned here with Felix Jones in the mix, but he's a first-round selection because he will score a lot of touchdowns. He has 28 touchdowns in his first two seasons without starting. He has received 20 carries in a game just once.

Running back by committee
Panthers: DeAngelo Williams and Jonathan Stewart -- Williams has looked good in the preseason. Stewart has more upside, but has been slowed by injury in the preseason.

Bengals: Rudi Johnson, Kenny Watson and Chris Perry -- Johnson had a disappointing year, plagued by a hamstring injury. He's not a threat in the passing game. Perry can't stay healthy. Watson is a good late-round selection that could produce.

Bears: Matt Forte, Kevin Jones and Adrian Peterson-- Forte, a rookie from Tulane, should get most of the carries and is one of those running backs you can get in Round 4 or later that could provide good value. Jones is coming off an injury and could be a late-season contributor.

Broncos: Selvin Young, Ryan Torain (injured), Andre Hall and Michael Pittman-- Young should get most of the carries, but Mike Shanahan likes to torture fantasy owners, so beware.

Lions: Kevin Smith, Brian Calhoun and Tatum Bell -- Smith, who had 450 carries at Central Florida last season, is the favorite for most of the carries. Another back you get round four or later.

Texans: Ahman Green, Chris Brown, Chris Taylor and Steve Slaton -- Green got injured on the first play of the preseason. Brown is constantly injured.

Jaguars: Fred Taylor and Maurice Jones-Drew -- Jones-Drew is a late first-round to early second round pick. He didn't have a 20-carry game last season, but Taylor is 32 with a ton of carries in his career.

Dolphins: Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams -- Brown is coming off an ACL tear and was one of the best backs before getting injured last season. If healthy, Brown should emerge as the primary back.

Patriots: Laurence Maroney, Sammy Morris and LaMont Jordan -- Maroney finished strong after being plagued by injuries. He needs to improve his blocking to stay on the field more. He is undervalued in drafts and could be more productive this season than people think.

Saints: Reggie Bush, Deuce McAllister and Pierre Thomas -- Bush is much more valuable in PPR leagues. Considering how explosive he was at USC, it's hard to believe he didn't have a run of more than 40 yards. McAllister is coming off two knee surgeries. Thomas showed some promise late in the season.

Giants: Brandon Jacobs, Ahmad Bradshaw and Derrick Ward -- Jacobs is a beast, but health is the major question. He missed five games last season. He still had over 1,000 yards and averaged 5 yards per carry.

Raiders: Darren McFadden and Justin Fargas -- McFadden is usually the first rookie drafted. The Raiders ran a lot last season and should again this year. Fargas is injury-prone.

Steelers: Willie Parker and Rashard Mendenhall -- Parker is coming off a broken leg and two straight seasons of 320 carries or more with a small build. He won't give you a lot of receptions also. Mendenhall's stock rises each day in drafts. He should get a lot of goal-line carries.

Seahawks: Julius Jones, Maurice Morris and T.J. Duckett -- Jones has ability, but put up poor numbers in a prolific Cowboys offense.

Buccaneers: Earnest Graham, Warrick Dunn, Michael Bennett and Cadillac Williams -- Graham should get most of the carries.

Titans: LenDale White, Chris Johnson and Chris Henry -- White should get most of the carries and be a good fantasy player. Johnson's stock is on the rise. He has looked very good in the preseason and is very quick. He is earning more touches as the preseason goes on.

Percival placed on the disabled list

BY ADAM RONIS

Health more than performance was the main concern when it came to Troy Percival this season and that's been the biggest issue. Percival was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a sprained right knee. It's his third trip to the DL this season. He just turned 39, pitched 40 innings last season, sat out 2006 and threw just 25 innings in 2004. He pitched 39 innings this season and saved 27 games. Dan Wheeler is the favorite for saves and Grant Balfour will be in the mix, too.

Young placed on disabled list

BY ADAM RONIS

The Padres placed pitcher Chris Young on the 15-day disabled list with a strained right forearm. Young spent time on the DL after getting hit in the face with a line drive and made three starts since returning. He said he might not return this season.

Fantasy baseball roundtable

BY ADAM RONIS

This week's baseball fantasy roundtable was hosted by Rudy Gamble of razzball.com. The question is: Which player(s) did you deliberately not draft on any of your teams because you thought they were overrated and your assessment proved correct? Here's the link.

Crawford to have surgery

BY ADAM RONIS

Carl Crawford will undergo surgery to repair a tendon in his right wrist on Thursday and is likely out for the season. He could return at the end of the season, but that is very optimistic.
