There are lies, there are damn lies and there are statistics

That's a favorite expression of Newsday copy editor extraordinaire Greg G., who has spent many a day and night toiling over our copy over the last 19 years at Newsday. And the expression came to mind when La Monica's monthly page views e-mail came out a few hours ago. lies.jpg

Not that there are any lies about to be uncovered. In fact, we did a respectable number in June, considering there were no games, the draft is deep in the rear view mirror, free agency is over and done with, Spygate is over, and the NFL is essentially shut down until training camp. While we didn't do anything that approached the record-setting run of six consecutive months of record page views - a stat that got Best insanely jealous - the action was solid nonetheless.

In fact, it actually beat the standard back in April, 2007, when we first got an inkling of what this blog stuff could do. That was our previous best month, thanks to a flurry of draft buzz. And although we regularly smashed that number during the regular season and playoffs - and especially during free agency and the draft - the fact that we hit a decent number like that when the NFL was dead is all good.

Of course, http://weblogs.newsday.com/sports/watchdog/blog/">Best is still basking in the glow of his record-setting month, thanks to him breaking the story of Mike and the Mad Dog's potential breakup and whatever other controversy was in the news. But we're quite happy with our little corner of the blogosphere, and will be content to recharge our mental batteries over the next couple weeks and get back at it when camps approach.

In the meantime, enjoy the Mets and Yankees as they toil in mediocrity.

We'll provide the occasional blog post just to whet your appetite on football, look-a-likes, or whatever else tickles our fancy as we tend to domestic projects, lots of time with the wife and kids, our soccer fix and whatever else we come across during the ever-shrinking NFL off-season.

Cheers.

Bob,

What about NHL free agency? Jagr to Pittsburgh? I thought you were a real fan?

Personally, my favorite Reagan quote is, "I know it's hard when you're up to your armpits in alligators to remember you came here to drain the swamp."

I really don't know why it came to mind here...
enjoy vacation

Bob, as a loyal Newsday blog viewer every day, I noticed you missed several days in June...you have to keep posting to maintain contact with somebody like Best!

Boland:

Enjoy vacation, too.

Mark the Dog:

I'm not sure I really want to "maintain contact" with somebody like Best.

(Sorry for the lapse. If I don't take a few days to clear out my brain, it will explode, and there won't be any blog. Hope you understand. Once training camp starts, we'll give you something just about every day through next year's draft.)

Upon further review, I agree with your assessment.
