Why, oh why, am I nice to Boland?
Look, I've tried to share all my insights (few though they may be) from these many, many years covering this great sport we all love, and all I get from the rookie Jets' beat writer Erik Boland is constant harrassment.
Oh, he's nice enough to my face, and is pleasant whenever he calls looking for assistance or advice (thank goodness for unlimited minutes). But give him a blog post, and the bubbling cauldron of intensity is sure to stick the dagger in and twist ... as he did yet again with his latest missive.
Apparently, a blogger named Brian Bassett from thejetsblog.com is all pumped up that he got a credential for Sunday's game, and he took a shot at Boland in the process.
"So this weekend will mark the first time that we at TJB have actual game credentials. (OMG!!!)" is how the excitable Mr. Bassett described scoring his first career credential. (I am guessing that I have been covering football waaaaaaaaay longer than Mr. Bassett has been alive.)
Later in his blog post, Bassett smacked Boland around when he asked his readers for questions he might ask after the game:
“No promises, but please leave some below and we’ll do our best to ask as many as we can that:
1) We can get in while jockeying for position against renowned question hogs like Erik Boland from Newsday.
2) Aren’t rambling wrecks.
3) Don’t end with us getting punched in the face."
To which Boland responded:
"Really? I get the No. 1 spot there? Really?
But the best part is that after writing that, he THEN sends me an email asking for my assistance; to please call him because he’s not sure about game-day procedure at the Meadowlands and other media stuff. As Bill Rafferty says, “Onions!”
We’ll be sure to get that man a spot at the pre-game meal table with Glauber Sunday. Alone."
Now, Boland, was that really necessary? I never had these issues with Rock.
And one more thing: What the hell is the meaning of that picture of a door-knocker?

Make sure Bassett knows about the longstanding tradition of having to introduce himself to every person in the press box and tell them that that he's covering his first game, Bob.
And Bassett, make sure you ask the players for autographs in the locker room. They love that.
Great advice, Gridder Tom. Will do.
Again, I never had these issues when Rock was around ... sigh.
I'll be sure to bring an ample supply of tissue to the game tomorrow.
Isn't E-Bola from Cleveland? That explains everything :-)
