Matt E., the new Glauber Nation Playoff Picks champion

Congrats to Matt E., who held off the competition in what turned out to be a stirring finish in the second annual Glauber Nation Playoff Picks Contest.

He held off Daniel by a game, although we're a little disappointed that Dan the Man decided he'd pick the opposite of Matt E. just to have a winner. The purpose of picking the score was to break such a tie. Oh, well.

Congrats to one and all for playing.

And a special congrats to Big Ben is Back! (aka BBiB!), who brought the family down and got a chance to see the spectacular game in person. He may have wiped out a good chunk of his kids' college fund, but the trip was still worth it in his mind.

(Matt E. can now have his name in lights if he so chooses. You know. A picture, a real name, a bio box that lists his favorite stuff in life, etc. In the meantime, we did hear from Matt E. this morning, and he's already puffing his chest to the blogosphere. Well done, sir.)

Glauber Nation Picks Contest to be decided

The moment has arrived, people.

Time to make your picks for the second annual Glauber Nation Playoff Picks contest.

There's currently a two-way tie at the top between Daniel and Matt E. The rest of the standings are there, too.

Because the field is so tight (Daniel and Matt E. at 7 wins each, but a bunch at 6 wins), we'll require not only the winner, but the score of the game. The tiebreaker will be which contestant comes closest to picking the score.

Fire away, people.

And so, the field narrows ... two-way tie at top spot in the second annual Glauber Nation Playoffs Picks contest

What a race.

After last week's five-way tie for first, we're down to Daniel and Matt E. for the top spot, with five contestants - including cheating Neil Best - deadlocked for second.

BBiB! has no hope of winning the contest, but we're quite sure he doesn't give a rat's behind. After all, his beloved Stillers are in the Big Show. Black N Gold is similarly delighted, and he's only a game out.

Here's a look at the official BBiB! spreadsheet standings.

Make your picks for Championship Weekend

Time for Round 3 of the second annual Glauber Nation Playoff Picks contest.

We go straight up: Iggles-Cardinals and Ravens-Stillers.

Here's a look at the current standings. There is currently a five-way tie for first. Thrilling stuff.

Looks like this one will go down to the wire and won't be decided until Feb. 1 in Tampa.

fyi: Mantz is on a roll so far, going 7-1 against the spread, fearing that federal authorities will be tracking his every move.

Also, Mantz has a somewhat troubling blog post about the state of newspapers vis-a-vis the Internet. According to a new survey, more people get their news from the Internet than newspapers. It's now 40 percent, compared to just 24 percent in September, 2007.

I'd be curious to see if, of that 40 percent, just how many got their Internet news from Internet sites of newspapers.

In the meantime, I haven't heard whether authorities in Tampa have captured the feces-throwing monkey that recently escaped captivity.

Best "in lead" of picks contest

BBiB! has completed the spread sheet, and the results from Wild Card weekend are in.

BBiB! is a little creeped out by the fact that Best picked the Chargers in our picks contest and then picked the Colts to go to the Super Bowl in his blog AND in the paper. But he's giving credit for the the win in the picks. He's also decided that we ccould the Falcons pick because Mantz noticed we'd changed it in the picks post.

Also, NKR screwed up her picks by selecting both the Dolphins and Ravens, while failing to pick the Vikings-Eagles game.

Best, Mantz take pleasure in our pain

It wasn't easy handicapping the wild card weekend games, where all four road teams were favorites (and three of the four won and covered). So we knew we'd potentially have some trouble figuring things out.

And we did.

A 1-3 record to start off, which naturally led to some dissing by Neil Best and Bob Mantz, who were puffing their chests at their own records. Mantz went 3-1. Best says he went 4-0, simply by picking the opposite of me. And while technically that's true, I actually went with the Cardinals (instead of the Falcons) in Friday's picks post, which Mantz caught and asked for a clarification. I said that I would stick with the Cardinals. Thank goodness.

Best, who predicted the Chargers would win, then predicted in a blog post that the Colts would go to the Super Bowl. When called on this, he changed his pick. However, he is shockingly refusing to surrender the pick in our contest, insisting that he is 4-0. (Karma hit back, though. The post predicting a Manning-Manning Super Bowl ran in the Sunday newspaper. The day after Peyton lost to the Chargers.)

I have always lived by the credo that you should never dis another person's picks, no matter how ridiculous they are. I have also learned - the hard way - never to dis another person's power rankings. This is what happened with Mantz several weeks back, and my picks immediately went in the toilet.

Then again, by suggesting Mantz was ingesting hallucinogenic drugs before making his power rankings, it did eventually lead to Mantz naming us as the No. 1 sports blog of 2008, so it wasn't all in vain.

As for the results of the second annual Glauber Nation contest, which includes defending champion "Poppy," BBiB! has received the information from the weekend's picks, and he is compiling the spreadsheet as we speak. We will post it as soon as he's finished.

(Memo to BBiB!'s boss: Please consider this blog post an official note for him to goof off at work for as long as it takes to get the spreadsheet finished.)

It's time for the 2008 Glauber Nation Playoff Contest

With the start of the playoffs just days away, it is time for the second annual Glauber Nation Playoff Picks Contest.

Back to defend his championship is the legendary "Poppy," who eked out an impressive win in last year's playoffs and had the distinct pleasure of his own celebratory blog post.

Bullet Bob Buscavage of Moriches now challenges anyone and everyone to another playoff competition. Good luck to one and all.

BBiB! has already been contacted about doing the spreadsheet, so fire away.

We'll go week-by-week, so this week's games:

Falcons at Cardinals
Eagles at Vikings
Ravens at Dolphins
Jets at Patriots ... ha! just kidding
Colts at Chargers

(World famous blogger Bob Mantz and I will have a side arrangement here - we will not call this a bet because we/I don't bet - but there could be a contribution to a charity, assuming that is all above board).
