Peyton Manning wins third MVP (I didn't vote for him)
The Colts' quarterback won in a landslide, garnering 32 of 50 votes for the Associated Press Most Valuable Player award.
I was leaning strongly toward casting my vote for Manning, but after a spirited discussion with some fellow football scribes whose opinions I value, and much deliberation, I wound up going with Chad Pennington of the Dolphins.
I voted for Manning in a different category (the award has not yet come out, so I will not say which one), and selected Kerry Collins as my Comeback Player of the Year. Pennington won his second Comeback Player of the Year award.
I realize Manning's performance was more dominant than Pennington's, but this award is not based solely on production. It is the most VALUABLE player, not simply the BEST player. Yes, if you take away Manning from the Colts' offense, they'd be nowhere. But you can make that case for every single team that has a high-caliber quarterback. Giants, Chargers, Panthers, Cardinals, Patriots (well, ok, not EVERY team, but you know what I mean). And I did vote for Manning the two previous times he won the award.
With Pennington, the Dolphins improved by 10 wins over last season. 10 wins! It's tied for the biggest turnaround in league history. Had anyone else been the starter for Miami - Josh McCown, Chad Henne or John Beck - I doubt the Dolphins would have been much better than 6-10.
Anyway, congrats to Mr. Manning.
I wish him luck in the playoffs.
I, unlike the late-arriving Neil Best, predicted a Manning-Manning showdown in Tampa on Feb. 1 before the season started. Best waited until before the playoffs started.

Now I have to root for the Chargers against the Colts. Out of spite. I like both teams and I'm a fan of both QBs, but I'm siding with Rivers here because he got slighted this season. Best numbers in the league - and he did it with a bad defense and Tomlinson running like LenDale White - and the man can't even get a Pro Bowl spot. Heck, he should've gotten carry-over MVP votes for playing with a torn ACL last year. And for taunting the Broncos. That's spunk.
Bob, at least you weren't on the Matty Ice bandwagon.
I don't know why, but that "Matty Ice" nickname rubs me the wrong way.
The word "valuable" when used in sports discussions is so ambiguous. Like you, I take MVP to mean the player who is most valuable to his team, but others I think just think it means the best player. I think the award is meant to be for the best player, it just got named incorrectly way back when. So why don't they just change it to "The Best Player Award." But I guess that would leave sports talk radio with much less to talk about.
Good point, Brian. Perfect word: ambiguous. I take valuable to mean just that - valuable, not the best.
There are two other categories - Offensive Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year - that, to me anyway, are meant to take care of this issue.
Fun! A Manning/Manning Superbowl.... could you imagine their conflicted family?
