It was time for Laveranues Coles to go

The Jets released the nine-year veteran today, despite the fact Coles is due to make $6 million in guaranteed salary this season.

Coles, 31, wanted a contract extension that would have allowed him to retire with the Jets. But when head coach Rex Ryan and general manager Mike Tannenbaum balked, Coles asked out. And the Jets granted his release.

Two words to describe the column I'll write for tomorrow's paper: Good riddance.

Two stats that justify that stance: In nine NFL seasons, Coles has gone over 1,000 yards just three times. And he has surpassed 1,000 yards only once in his last five years.

Adios!

(UPDATE: The Jets have clarified Coles' contract situation, saying that they actually re-worked the deal. Coles was not released, but will become an unrestricted free agent at 12:01 a.m. Friday. It's an important distinction, because the Jets are now off the hook for Coles' guaranteed $6 million salary in 2009.)

Totally agree Bob. All he did was complain. He is not a #1 receiver.

Typical insanity from the WR position, getting "out" from under a guaranteed payday. Someday Coles will learn that there are worse things in life than being Steve Austin in Green.

It's David Clowney time!
