As expected, Jay Cutler a no-show in Denver
The Broncos started their off-season workout program today, and Jay Cutler was not around.
Not a surprise, considering Cutler is still miffed at the team for getting involved in trade talks for Matt Cassel.
Jets fans are particularly anxious to see what happens with all of this, but again, I caution against expecting too much. For starters, Cutler will be an expensive proposition, both in terms of draft-choice compensation and dollars; there is every reason to believe he will include a massive contract extension before agreeing to any trade.
Moreover, I still find Cutler's behavior in all this less than exemplary. He has complained long and loud in a very public forum, and by refusing to meet individually with head coach Josh McDaniels (Cutler insisted on his agent being there, too), he didn't show his coach much.
I'll grant you that Cutler was within his rights to ask that his agent be there, but let's face it. If these two guys are ever going to get along, it's because they work things out man-to-man, not coach-to-player/agent.
I'm sure the Jets are paying close attention to what's going on, although their attention early this week is on Kansas State quarterback Josh Freeman. That said, Rex Ryan has to think long and hard about whether he wants a quarterback who is reacting so sensitively. After all, this is New York, and this place doesn't take too kindly to athletes who can't take criticism.

The more I read, the more I think this is about Cutler trying to get money from the Bronco's. Seeing Matt Cassell getting a huge one year contract after just one season didn't sit well with the sensitive Cutler. No doubt his Agent worked him into believing that he should be making near-Cassell money, the man he was almost traded for. I envision two possible scenarios- In the first, he is traded to Detroit, possibly for the first overall pick, or he stays with Denver after signing a contract extension for big money. I think the Jets should stay away from this guy.
1. Cutler is an arrogant, self-centered boor. In other words he is
star NFL quarterback.
2. It is on the shoulder of any NFL head coach to get along with
star NFL quarterbacks.
3. For a 32 year old new head coach not to realize this is
unforgivable.
4. I am a Raider fan and hate all things Orange, so I hope McDaniels
is not fired and Cutler goes to the NFC.
I read up on Cutler a couple years back before the draft that he was in and the book on him was that he was cocky.. talented and very much a gun slinger type.. Which is his personality and its that very fire that makes him as good as he is.. I'm a Jets fan and I LOVE him.. He can be cocky in New York the same way Joe Namath was many years ago... and we all know what he did.
I can guarantee if any of you folks were good at your job, only to have your boss confide to the rumor mill and not to you personally that they were considering firing you and replacing you with someone else who was a friend of his, you wouldn't be calling him a "boor" or nailing him for being angry. You'd be just as p----d off as Cutler is. Should he have reacted so publicly? maybe not. But when your boss betrays you and betrays your trust, do you just sit there and take being humiliated, knowing he'd rather have a friend of his working for him instead of you? No one's going to win---Cutler does look immature, but he's also 25 and still a young kid. What's McDaniels's excuse? Better yet, what's Pat Bowlen's excuse for looking more and more like Al Davis, absent when the important decisions need to be made, only to come out of his bunker to slam the player instead of where the blame truly lies? So much for being the "ideal" franchise.
As a Broncos fan, I was very disappointed when McDaniels was hired. Coming from the Cheatriots, trained by master scumbag cheater ("it's not cheating if you win") Belichek, I almost threw up when he was announced as the Broncos' new head coach. And now this mess. That this idiot would prefer a mediocre Cassel to Cutler is totally insane. Bolen must be in the early stages of dementia.
Here in Denver we see this whole thing differently than a lot of sports writers do. It was our assumption that Cutler was the guy at QB, and nothing led anyone to any other conclusion until it came out that McDaniels wanted a trade. The timing and methodology of it is offensive to Denver fans, who like Cutler and believe in him. The fans, and Jay assumed he was the guy, so it was a surprise. On Saturday Jay met with McDaniels and was told he was not the first choice for QB, and this coming after the first trade went south.
The bottom line is; Who are they going to bring to Denver if McDaniel's favorite choice is not available? Bowlen has given McDaniels too much leeway, and he has handled this deal badly, but then that goes to a lack of maturity too doesn't it? I mean, Josh is probably good for the future, but is stepping hard all over everything and doing harm in the PR dept., especially with the fans. It is the fans who spend the money isn't it?
I agree that the club is a business, but in any business there should be some respect for the key employees. Jay has not been unreasonable in questioning this thing, and the Denver fans are questioning it too. Jay has invested quite a lot in the community here, and that goes to his credit. He reminds us a lot of Elway, and if you remember, Elway was a bit unperfect in his first few seasons. I think Jay is the guy, but it looks like we will be losing him to Chicago or Tennessee! It did not have to happen this way.
I will believe it is about money when proof of that comes out. It is about money in many cases, but the argument is still that the negative side of all this was on the side of the Bronco organization. Jay has been reacting to that in his own fairly quiet way, and whatever the money is I have not clue. I just know that most of the fans here like him and were just as surprised as he was over the proposed trade for Cassel. Since that trade did not happen, McDaniels should have welcomed Cutler with open arms. If anyone has any proof of the money argument, let's see it.
Cutler doesn't return Pat Bowlen's phone calls? AYFKM? Check the eyes on the sidelines. Glazed. I'm betting it's not the the blood sugar. You figure it out. He's high maintenance at best and 17-20 as a quarterback. Let's see how many times he gets the San Diego call again. He plays just well enough to get you beat. He's the Santa Claus, Indiana / Vanderbilt version of Steve DeBerg. Get him out of here. "Stronger arm than Elway"? I think not. I've watche Elway roll right and throw 80 years to the opposite side of the field. Cutler's a punk. We can get Cassell after this season when Thigpen beats him out in Kansas City.
Miami should trade Chad Henne and their 2009 1st round draft pick to the Broncos for QB Jay Cutler. Then the y should trade Chad Pennington back to the NY Jets for Kellen Clemens!!!
Danny, If I signed a six year $48 million contract as Cutler did, I'd deal
with it just fine. Really, when are people going to stop comparing what happens
in sports to the real world? We watch it precisely because it has nothing to do with the
real world we live in.
rcoolc, let's give up on the whole pennington thing shall we? most heralded .500
quarterback in league history. move on already.
