Giants' PSLs selling like hotcakes

The Giants have just announced that they've sold all personal seat licenses (PSLs) for non-club seats in the new stadium at the Meadowlands. The stadium is set to come on line starting with the 2010 season.

According to the team, the only PSLs remaining for purchase are a limited number of seats in the three club areas – Coach’s Club, Mezzanine Club A and Mezzanine Club B. So far, over 70,000 PSLs have been sold, including all non-club PSL seats.

The Giants say that construction on the new stadium remains several months ahead of schedule. The Giants will begin play in their new home in 2010, meaning the new building is virtually sold out 18 months prior to the first game, an unprecedented success in the sale of PSLs.

The limited number of club seats still for sale will be made available to the approximately 93,000 fans remaining on the Giants’ season ticket waiting list. Those wait-list members will be contacted in groups of 10,000 fans until all remaining PSLs are sold.

Fans who purchased PSLs were initially told they would receive their seat assignments in the spring of 2010, approximately a year from now. Because construction continues at a rapid pace and the PSLs have been sold, Giants Stadium LLC now hopes to inform fans of their exact seat locations this fall.

“The individuals who purchased these seat licenses are our current season tickets holders and those who have been on the wait-list for many, many years,” said John Mara, the Giants President and Chief Executive Officer. “Approximately 90 percent of our current season ticket accounts have purchased tickets in the new building, which again demonstrates that Giants fans are the most loyal in professional sports. We thank them for their support.”

Said Giants Chairman and Executive VP Steve Tisch: "The PSL sales team was able to work with our season ticket holders and those on the wait-list on virtually a one-to-one basis,” said Steve Tisch, the Giants Chairman and Executive Vice President. “That gave our fans a good understanding of the new stadium and what options were best for them in our new building. Our team worked with them, addressed any issues and tried to accommodate them even in these challenging economic times, and we are grateful for their loyalty."

I have to say I'm surprised that the sales have gone so well, especially in a difficult economy. I don't think anyone likes the idea of having to pay such a high premium for seats, but that's the economic reality of building a new stadium without any public money.

The demand was there, and the Giants have turned this into a ringing success, especially at a time when just about every other financial sector of the economy is hurting.

Bob any info from the Jets on how their PSL's are selling?

JayM:

No concrete numbers from Jets just yet, and I don't expect there to be for a while, since they started a bit later than the Giants.
