NFL players lose 2 or 3 years off their life for every season played
I got this story from the Seattle Post-Intelligencer (which is now only online, by the way) via Bob's Blitz.
I agree with Mr. Mantz in wondering why commissioner Roger Goodell is in favor of a 17- or 18-game regular season knowing that the average NFL player loses 2 or 3 years off his life for every season played due to the intense toll the game takes on a body. (Of course, this also has to do with players, especially lineman, being morbidly obese.)
Goodell's proposal won't necessarily add games (any addition to the regular season would take away from the preseason), but the players who endure the bulk of the grueling regular season only play a series, a quarter, or a half (tops), during the preseason, which is far less demanding than a full contest that counts.
From the Seattle P-I story:
53-59
Average life expectancy for an NFL retiree, depending on playing position, according to cardiologist Jeffrey Boone.
75
Average life expectancy for U.S. men overall, according to the National Center for Health Statistics.

Chris,
Good to see you finally reading some good writing.
Big Man
It's a very interesting story, although I'm a little skeptical of the 53-59 life expectancy number.
I'd just like to see the study he completed.
Any way you slice it, though, football is a brutal sport, and guys feel it later in life ... big-time.
The question that really needs to be asked (and answered) about shorter life expectancies for football players.
That the NFL NEVER wants asked or answered.
Is it the wear and tear of the game that's killing the guys earlier?
Or is it wear and tear of the chemicals needed to perform at a level necessary to compete, that is killing these guys?
And on a related note.....
Why are cities and towns now littered with "Women's Hospitals", yet I never see any "Men's Hospitals"?
Why, in almost every city, are there almost weekly charity events like "10k Walk for Bre*st Cancer" or "5K run for Menopause", yet I never see anything resembling something like a "Drink For Col*n Cancer" type of benefit?
And it's WOMEN who (already) have higher life expectancies, BY FAR.
I'm tellin' ya, they're killin' us guys......they're killin' us.
(asterisks added to keep this comment from going to the penalty box).
