Draft could go in prime time, last for 3 days
Rick Gosselin of the Dallas Morning News reports that the NFL is considering a plan to hold the first round of the NFL draft in prime time on a Thursday night, perhaps as soon as 2010.
Rounds 2-3 would be held on Friday evening, and then rounds 4-7 would be held on Saturday.
Wow.
When I first started covering pro football (1985), the draft was held on a Saturday in late April each year in a ballroom at the Marriott Marquis in New York. There were 12 rounds.
I draw two conclusions from this: 1. I am old. 2. There is a lot more interest in the draft nowadays.

1) You are old.
2) Not so much as more interest as it is more opportunity to sell something that wasn't being sold much before. So the NFL and ESPN can make a few dollars more.
Good grief :( I know ESPN is desperate for programming and ad revenue but why kill one of the special events the NFL has? I went to the draft twice in the 80s and besides getting Sean Landetta's autograph and meeting the unknown WFAN reporter Mike Breen it was lots of fun.
1) I am older.
2) Take away the money to be realized by the cargo, and the multicultural skin colors of that cargo, and I see no difference between ESPN's obnoxious coverage of the NFL Draft and the historical spectacle of watching a slave ship entering Charleston Harbor in 1853 or being part of the gala atmosphere that was found at the gates of Rome in any year B.C., when the Roman Army returned from pillaging the northern reaches of Europe.
It's just a great big human meat market.
With the powerful NFL tycoons playing the roles of plantation owners and the drunken fans in attendance playing out the part of the patrician class of Rome.
Oh, and let's not leave out the hundreds (?) of ESPN talking heads living the dream of playing the part of flesh peddling auctioneers.
Just another example of how little our human race has not progressed over the centuries.
We've removed that shackles, indeed, we reimburse our 21st Century slaves and gladiators immeasurably, yet we still can't get enough of the spectacle of a flesh auction.
And that's just my opinion....from two time zones away.
(I think I'm overdue for a visit to the meat rack of a local strip club...with 2 dollar bills in hand).
