Kurt Warner is a great QB ... and a great guy, too

The Cardinals quarterback took his team on an unlikely ride to the Super Bowl against the Stillers, and nearly pulled out a miracle comeback.

Along the way, he earned plenty of admirers in the media for his cooperation and heartfelt observations about the game and about life. (Actually, Warner won admiration for those traits years ago, but he's still at it.)

He earned the Pro Football Writers of America's "Good Guy" award, it was announced this morning. The Good Guy Award goes to a player that best helped the media do its job.

"I’ve been around long enough to understand the important role the media plays in the popularity and success of the NFL," Warner said. "I’ve always appreciated the job that journalists do as well as the amount of pride and effort they put into their work and I’m grateful to the PFWA for this honor.”

Class act. One of the best we've ever had the privilege to cover over the years.

Other award winners from the PFWA:

The Halas Award, given to the individual in the NFL that overcame the most adversity to succeed, went to Buccaneers kicker Matt Bryant. Bryant’s 3-month-old son died in his sleep in the week preceding the third game of the season. Four days later, (and one day after the funeral), Bryant kicked three field goals, including the game-winner in the final three minutes, to give the Bucs a victory at home over Green Bay.

The Horrigan Award, given to the person that helped the media best do its job last season, went to Steelers owner and president Dan Rooney. Truth be told, Rooney could easily have won this award for the last 30 years.

The McCann Award, for long and distinguished service to the profession, goes to Peter King of Sports Illustrated. King, a former Newsday scribe in the 1980's, has been covering the NFL for 30 years, the last 20 at Sports Illustrated. Well deserved to one of the hardest working people in the business.

The Rozelle Award, given to the top public relations department in the league, went to the Cardinals. Kudos to director of media relations Mark Dalton.
