Paulus works out for the Packers
Greg Paulus had a decision coming out of high school at Christian Brothers Academy in Syracuse — quarterback the football team at Notre Dame or play point guard for the hoops team at Duke.
Though Paulus set the New York State record with 11,763 career passing yards and won Gatorade's National (football) Player of the Year award his senior season, he chose Duke.
But now, after a mostly disappointing career as a Blue Devil (his starting spot was taken away this season by freshman Nolan Smith), Paulus is trying to make a comeback in football.
According to the Wisconsin State Journal, the 6-1, 185-pound Paulus worked out for the Packers in Durham a couple days ago.
It seems strange that Green Bay would want to sign a quarterback, because they have second-year men Brian Brohm and Matt Flynn to back up Aaron Rodgers. But I suppose stranger things have happened.
Paulus isn't the first college hoopster this year to flirt with the NFL — Cleveland State's J'Nathan Bullock had a workout with teams late last week, and Pittsburgh's DeJuan Blair thinks he could latch on somewhere as a tight end or defensive end if the NBA doesn't work out.
The formula is already in place to make the switch. Antonio Gates is a five-time Pro Bowler, yet he didn't play a down while at Kent State. Granted, he's 6-4, 260 pounds.
Personally, I doubt the Packers will bite on a "QB" that could be confused with Doug Flutie. But that's just my opinion.
