Dolphins are showing Jake Long the money

Jake Long signed a lucrative rookie contract after the Dolphins made him the top pick in last year's draft -- a five-year pact that included $30 million guaranteed.

The deal was potentially worth $57.5 million total, and according to Harvey Fialkov of the Miami Sun-Sentinel, Long's Pro Bowl selection (he replaced Jason Peters on the AFC squad) appears to have triggered an escalator in the deal. Fialkov cited contract figures from the NFLPA website that showed Long will receive big raises each of the next five seasons.

They are as follows:

2009 - $3.75 $6.5 M
2010 - $4.5 to $9M
2011 - $5.25 to $10M
2012 - $6 to 10M
2013 - $6.75 to $10.75M

That's a lot of dough, but Long, who just turned 24 earlier this month, will be the foundation of Miami's O-line for many years to come.

And it seems like he handles himself well. Said new teammate Jake Grove: "You don't really see him. He's quiet. He always makes his block. You don't hear much out of him. He's not a real flashy guy. He gives a solid, consistent performance. Obviously, he made the Pro Bowl last year. He's a great player, a hard worker. There's no telling how good he can be.''
