Ravens receiver Derrick Mason retiring

According to the Baltimore Sun (through jocklife.com), the 32-year old wide receiver (pictured right) has decided to retire citing a lack of enthusiasm.
Said the two-time Pro Bowler to jocklife.com: “I have had a tremendous career and I played for two great teams [Titans and Ravens], I had fun. In my career, I have been able to do everything but win a Super Bowl [he made it with the '99 Titans]. I’ve had the opportunity to play on great teams and with great players. After 12 years, I have seen it all and done it all.
"Right now, I am content with the decision I am making. All good things come to an end and I am ready to see what else life has to offer.
“I have been thinking about this since the season ended. Emotionally I am just not that enthused. I have not been that enthused to get up and work out…it was getting to that point. This decision has nothing to do with the contract situation; I have made enough money, more than enough money. Emotionally there are things that are more important. It’s time right now. I don’t know what’s going to happen from here, but it’s going to be really nice to see what life has in store for me. What I want people to remember about my NFL career is that I played hard…played hard in practice and the game. I tried to make everyone better and would do anything to help.”
Mason played eight seasons with the Titans before spending the last four in Baltimore. He had seven 1,000-yard receiving seasons, including each of the last two seasons. He led the Ravens in receiving three of the last four seasons and finished his career with 10,061 receiving yards, which is 30th all time.
Mason's 103 receptions in 2007 set a franchise mark, besting his own total of 86 in 2005. His 2,690 all-purpose yards in 2000 (895 receiving, 662 punt return, 1,132 kick return, 1 rushing) remains an NFL record.
Mason's announcement comes just nine days after the death of former teammate Steve McNair, who he played with all seven years in Tennessee and another season in Baltimore.
He was slated to make $3 million next season, the last under his current contract. He was trying to get a long-term extension from the Ravens, but a deal never materialized. He maintains that the contract situation did not a factor into his decision.
Mason's retirement leaves the Ravens with an unproven group of receivers -- Mark Clayton, Demetrius Williams, Kelley Washington and Yamon Figures to name a few -- to go along with tight ends Todd Heap and L.J. Smith.

Derrick Mason is a great WR. I wonder how this will effect the Ravens next year.
Mason was a very good receiver, underrated for most of his career. Kind of an odd time to announce a retirement. Ravens were a little thin at WR before this...wonder if they will make a move?
HE WAS A VERY GOOD PLAYER http://askthecollegekid.blogspot.com/
