Henderson says shoulder injury is legit

After Jack Del Rio criticized him for sitting out with a shoulder injury earlier this week, John Henderson responded Thursday by saying the injury is legitimate and that he and Del Rio have privately worked things out.

"I was a little upset, but we talked about it and everything is all right," Henderson told the Associated Press. "We talked like men. I let him know about the shoulder. He saw the X-rays. He was good on it. We're both good and we're getting back to work."

Henderson missed his third straight day of OTAs on Thursday.

He added: "Just like your daddy getting on you. Let it be. It's not anything to get blown out of the water. You have bigger and better things to do right now. I love this team. I love the Jags. I'm in. In. Everybody hear that? I've bought in. I'm here. I'm with this organization. I've been here eight years. I'm not tired. I love this game."

Del Rio did not back down from his comments.

"I've been very clear on what I expect and what I'm looking for and the accountability from there," the coach said. "There's no more to report on, there's no more to talk about. Now it's just time to get back to work."

Del Rio: "I think Lombardi's probably rolling over [in his grave]"

Jacksonville coach Jack Del Rio must be feeling the affects of the hot seat he's planted on after last year's 5-11 finish, because yesterday he lashed out at defensive tackle John Henderson for missing a second straight day of OTAs.

The 30-year old Henderson (a Pro Bowler in '04 and '06) took a second day off after suffering what Del Rio termed a "minor" shoulder injury.

But Del Rio was far from done with his criticism.

"I would think that [Vince] Lombardi's probably rolling over [in his grave] right now," Del Rio continued. "John's got a shoulder that back when I played, even prior to [then], I don't think anybody would've ever missed a snap for it. I think it's a minor bruise of sorts. It's not something that should keep anybody out of work. But he feels like he can't go, so we'll let him wait until he can.

"It's disappointing to see him pull himself out, quite frankly. So what he does, that's up to him. But we've got a team out here working hard that's committed, and I'm not going to slow down and worry about somebody that's finding his way out of a drill."

Henderson, who has missed three games the last two seasons due to injuries, declined comment through a team spokesperson.

Matt Jones released from the Jaguars

The Jaguars have released the former first-round pick.

Jones never really panned out in Jacksonville after being selected in the first round in 2005. A converted quarterback out of Arkansas, Jones was released Saturday from jail in Fayetteville after serving nearly a week-long sentence for violating his plea agreement on a drug charge.

The former Arkansas Razorback was charged in Fayetteville with cocaine possession in July. He was later suspended for the last three games of the 2008 season for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy.

In the plea agreement reached in October, Jones was ordered to participate in NFL-sponsored substance-abuse counseling and undergo random drug testing through the end of the football season.

The Jaguars picked Jones in the first round of the NFL draft in 2005. Before his suspension last season, Jones was having the best year of his career, with 65 catches for 761 yards and two touchdowns.

Jags' Jones in trouble again

Jacksonville receiver Matt Jones was arrested on Monday in Fayetteville, Ark., for violating the terms of his plea agreement stemming from a felony cocaine arrest in July 2008.

Jones was given a random alcohol test on Feb. 27 and he tested positive (he admitted to drinking beer while golfing with buddies, which violated his drug treatment program).

Said deputy prosecuting attorney Lisa Dennis to the Florida Times-Union: “He came to court and was upfront with Judge Gunn ... But the judge wanted to emphasize that even having a beer is against the rules. It’s not a terrible infraction, but he broke a rule.”

Jones was suspended the final three weeks of the season for violating the league's substance-abuse policy. Had he not been, Jones likely would have finished pretty close to 1,000 receiving yards (he had 761 in 12 games — the highest total of his four-year career).

The Jaguars have not released a statement, and messages to coach Jack Del Rio were unanswered.

Taylor done in Jax

fred-taylor-vs-steelers.jpg

Fred Taylor has been cut by the Jacksonville Jaguars after 11 seasons. The running back racked up 11,271 yards (including seven 1,000-yard seasons) with 62 touchdowns.

The team asked him if he wished to retire, but Taylor, at 33, insists he has more left in his tank.

Said Taylor: “I love Jacksonville, that’s where my heart is. That’s where I want to be. But this wasn’t my call. They were trying to do something for [my retirement], and I said, ‘No, I’m not ready for that.'

"We [his agent is Drew Rosenhaus] offered to take a pay cut, but their decision was made. They wanted to go young was their reply.”

He talks more about the release here to the Florida Times-Union.

Taylor split carries the last three seasons with Maurice Jones-Drew, and the lightened workload seemed to benefit the once oft-injured back.

But Taylor — who will be an extremely interesting Hall of Fame case (he is currently 16th on the all-time rushing list) — averaged a career-worst 3.9 yards per carry this season, the Jags finished 5-11 and he was due a $1 million roster bonus next month.

All things that led Jacksonville to start its youth movement now. Where might Taylor land? I'll let Mr. G handle that, as he is more plugged in to NFL front offices.

Del Rio on notice in Jacksonville

Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio won a power struggle with personnel director James “Shack” Harris, who resigned last week. But Harris’ replacement might ultimately decide Del Rio’s fate.

Gene Smith has been named general manager, and has been given carte blanche by Weaver for all football decisions. Harris preferred to build a consensus within the organization over personnel issues, but Smith is believed to be ready to make more definitive decisions without getting approval from others, including Del Rio.

Smith’s primary order of business is improving the draft; the Jaguars selected only one Pro Bowl player – cornerback Rashean Mathis – during Harris’ tenure.

If you want to look cool, don't get drafted by the Jaguars

Seems the Jags have a tradition of rookies having to get some of the most ridiculous haircuts imaginable.

See for yourself.

July 10, 2008

Matt Jones may be leaving Jacksonville ...

... but the Jaguars appear to be staying.

Despite a report that indicated team owner Wayne Weaver is negotiating a sale of the team - which could then be relocated to Los Angeles - Weaver is adamantly denying the team is for sale.

He insists the Jags will remain in Jacksonville.

Things aren't going quite so well for Matt Jones

The Jaguars former first-round receiver is having enough trouble sticking with the team now that newly acquired Troy Williamson and Jerry Porter are on board.

Now a much more serious situation confronts Jones. He was arrested earlier this week for possession of cocaine.

It is probably a matter of days or weeks before he is tossed out of J'ville.

Williamson about to be dealt to Jags

The Vikings pulled off a shocker in the 2005 draft, taking wide receiver Troy Williamson with the seventh overall pick out of South Carolina. The Vikings' coach at the time: Mike Tice.

But after three disappointing seasons punctuated by numerous dropped passes, Williamson is on the way out in Minny. He's about to join the Jaguars. And Tice.

The Jags will ship a sixth-round pick to the Vikings in exchange for Williamson. Tice is the Jaguars' assistant head coach. He was fired by Minnesota after Williamson's rookie season.
